Chocolate makes women smile

 

 

Chocolate is the best food to make a woman smile, scientists said today.

Researchers at the University of Amsterdam studied the facial expressions of 300 women in six European countries.

They were filmed as they ate ice cream, chocolate, cereal bars, yogurt and apples. Their facial expressions were then mapped using new computer software that claims to be able to read emotions.

The team found that ice cream and chocolate produced the happiest expressions.

Mandy Mistlin of Unilever, which commissioned the study, said: "We know ice cream is a real pleasure food; we turned to technology to back that up.

"The software may eventually be used to test reduced-fat and low-calorie ice creams to see if they maintain the 'pleasure principle'."

The software tracks muscle movements across the face - when we smile, frown or grimace, thousands of tiny facial muscles are at work.

The computer maps these movements onto a virtual face, then matches them to six basic patterns corresponding to anger, sadness, fear, surprise, disgust and happiness.

In tests on women - who tend to have more expressive faces - the software registered fewer positive reactions for healthy foods.

Apples produced 87 per cent neutral expressions across the continent with Italians and Swedes most likely to appear sad when eating them. Yogurt caused "sad" expressions for 28 per cent.

The researchers are now working on a consumer version of the software called Glad or Sad, which will allow people to upload their own pictures to have them analysed.

A 21-year-old US man ended up in hospital after spending two hours trapped in a vat of chocolate, police in Wisconsin said on Friday. The man said he had climbed into the tank before becoming trapped waist-deep in chocolate, police chief Randy Berner told AP news agency.

However, other reports suggest he was stirring the chocolate when he fell in.

Rescue workers and staff at the Debelis Corporation used cocoa-butter to thin out the chocolate and pull him free.

"It was pretty thick. It was virtually like quicksand," Captain Berner said.

"It's the first time I've ever heard of anything like this," he added.

The worker said his ankles were sore after the incident, and he was taken to a local hospital where he is recovering.

The accident involved dark chocolate.

Too much Chocolate can be quite disgusting.

But when its that time of month, and you see a Hersheys Chocolate bar with Almonds, its the best thing in the universe.

One of my friends is allergic to chocolate. She used to be able to eat it, and then suddenly she would get sick every time she had some. So that's what makes it worse, because she already knew how good it tastes, and she can't have it.
