Homage or theft?

Featured Replies

How would you define the similarities between Craftwerk's "Computer Love" and Coldplay's "Talk"?

Well here's the deal. Many people would consider coldplay's use of the computer love riff a "rip-off", I disagree. The term rip-off implies that they are maliciously stealing from kraftwerk without their consent. But instead of just taking the riff (with the hope of dancing around any copyright charges) Chris wrote a polite and humble letter to kraftwerk saying "hello, my name is Chris I play in a band named "Coldplay" and we were wondering..." yadda yadda yadda. Kraftwerk gave them permission and they went on to make a pretty good song with it. The way they went about it leans much closer to "homage" then "theft". they asked nicely and they were allowed to borrow it.

Not to mention that since Kraftwerk got song credit, I'm sure they also got a big fat royality check to go with it.

Exactly. I'm sure that permission came with a price tag! ;)

...I remeber watching a video about them writing to Kraftwerk.

Well, Coldplay are Coldplay, they'll do as they please.
