Benefits to lossless?

Featured Replies

I just got a brand new pair of Sennheiser headphones for Christmas this morning so I decided to experiment a little with higher audio formats. I usually use 128kbps mp3 encoding for my everyday listening purposes, but apparently it has quite a bit of quality loss when compressed from CD format. I ripped a few of my CDs to Apple Lossless to see if there was a difference, but so far I haven't noticed anything at all. Does anyone know any benefits to switching to lossless format from mp3?

One big advantage is that you can make perfect copies of cds

the one big disadvantage is that you only get a tiny amount of difference in quality on speakers which costs less than £200, which isn't worth the added file size.

I believe the gadget show did an experiment at Abbey Road with a few sound engineers to compare 3 different tracks (A pop, a Techno & a classical piece) encoded at various bitrates and in various formats, and only the classical piece the panel voted was the best at lossless, but

mp3s at 128 :o

At least have Mp3s at 192

Say I download a Radiohead album in FLAC, I then burn it to a CD, its still in FLAC right?

What If I add the album to Itunes (since this is usually how I burn CDs) will I even be able to add it to Itunes, or will it add it but a quality loss will result?

i think the biggest disadvantage of .flac is that not a lot of cdplayers play it. well, at least mine doesnt!

And if you have a slow connection it takes ages to download :P
