Coldplay To Release 'Best Of' To Escape EMI

We're only going to do four albums for you, EMI!

COLDPLAY are the next big-name act expected to join the mounting EMI records exodus.

The quartet’s upcoming fourth album could be their last proper studio effort for the struggling label, who have seen Sir Paul McCartney and Radiohead leave in the past year.

Coldplay can fulfill their current five-album deal with EMI /Parlophone by issuing a Best Of collection in 2009, thus making the multi-platinum selling act free agents.

A source close to the band said: “There’s so much uncertainty in the record industry right now. The boys don’t necessarily need a label anymore. They aren’t even considering putting pen to paper on any type of new contract until they see what happens.”

EMI endured a tough 2007. As well as losing key acts, the label made cutbacks across the entire company following a takeover.

A label insider said: “They’re not even replacing the staff who have moved on.

“Nobody seems to know what’s happening.”

Last year Sir Paul McCartney, 65, took a parting shot at the company he spent his entire career with, comparing EMI’s reluctance to move into the digital age to “the dinosaurs sitting around discussing the asteroid”. Thom Yorke, 39, also took a swipe at EMI head Guy Hands who claimed that they did not re-sign Radiohead because they wanted too much dosh.

Yorke, 39, said: “We did not ask for a load of cash from our old record label EMI to re-sign. That is a lie. Seems a very strange way for the head of an inter-national record label to be proceeding.”

Even Robbie Williams, 33, is said to be considering other options when his current EMI deal expires.

Coldplay are the jewel in EMI’s rusting crown.

They are so important to the company that when the band delayed the release of their last album, X&Y, EMI’s share price dropped.

But with Coldplay’s last two albums each selling well over 10 million copies around the world, just like Radiohead, they have a loyal and big enough fanbase to allow them to go it alone should they quit EMI.

Coldplay’s new album, whose working title is Prospekt, is due out in May or June.

The boys are plotting a major world tour to accompany what they believe will be their career-defining record.

Drummer Will Champion, 29, described the new Brian Eno-produced record as: “The start of something fresh.”

EMI will certainly be hoping so.

that sounds to me as if coldplay would fulfil the contract and stop making music in 2009...

what do you think?

They won't stop making music. If they release the Best Of in 2009 and do leave EMI, then they'll either find another label or not bother with another label and do it themselves. Coldplay aren't going anywhere for quite a while, it's the money men that are screwed lol.

And by releasing an official best-off, it would stop EMI releasing a dodgy greatest hits a few years after the band have left the label.

David's dodgy predictions:

EMI will either be bust in 2010 or have been sold on to another major as a catalog label.

Whatever happens Coldplay need to get away from EMI as soon as possible...

Too soon for a best of, I think, but that's the one reason I would be all for it.

I won't buy it.
I won't either, because I'll probably already own all of the music on it already. I'm interested in seeing Coldplay's song selection, though, especially if the upcoming album's new direction affects the band's hindsight.

They should go to the Live Nation

oh no way...

dunno why, something bad is going on with Emi :\

I think I'll buy it when it gets really cheap, except when they put some bonus songs on it or so :)

EMI used to be a good home for their artists and bands, but its (new) big bosses seem to have screwed themselves by screwing their artists.

Thom Yorke recently revealed that they were being paid next to nothing concerning EMI's digital downloads for their back catalogue, and for the past couple of years this particular kind of marketing has proven to be growing rapidly (ie. physical album sales has descreased while digital sales keep increasing).

Macca and Radiohead have made the right choice by leaving EMI, and I'm sure Coldplay (and Robbie Williams) will too.

2008 and beyond will prove to become an exciting time for bands and artists, mark my words.

The world doesn't necessarily NEED big corporative record labels. Artists will find a way to spread their music, one way or another.

It's absolutely great to see the rise in digital music, don't you think? EMI is sitting ion its ass, and they're about to lose everything that made them invincible for so many years.

Coldplay is definitely big enough to support themselves now, and that's going to be interesting; seeing where they go after they loose themselves. Unfortunately, it's not as easy for smaller bands, who don't have a name to lean on without a label of some sort.

They should go to the Live Nation

Live Nation, the record label whose only artist so-far is Madonna in a "360" deal, which means the record label gets to keep everything in exchange for an advance fee?

With all the major bands leaving the major labels, I do worry that overall music will suffer, as new bands won't have as much money thrown in their direction to make music.

I would buy it, why not. Support the band and have a nice play list

Depending on the track-listing, it could be a good CD just to have in the car.

i hope u are right, fixed... i just scared if they will stop making music... :laugh3:

Bad news:

Coldplay quitting label' claims denied

Record company sources say band will be sticking with EMI

Reports that Coldplay are set to leave their record label EMI have been dismissed by a source at the label.

Stories have been appearing yesterday (January 8) suggesting that the band only had one more album to deliver following the release of their next studio album, rumoured to be called ‘Prospekt’ and due out later this year.

The stories speculated that a greatest hits collection would follow and then the band would be free agents.

However, a source at the label told NME.COM today (January 9) that was not the case and the band remain in contract with the label.

“In reality Coldplay are signed to a long-term record deal with EMI and are committed to produce a number of studio albums," they explained. “The band's relationship with EMI is both long-term and very healthy and positive. Any suggestion to the contrary is incorrect and unfair on both parties.”

But meanwhile, someone who has managed to quit is the boss

EMI boss Tony Wadsworth has left the label, it has been announced today.

Wadsworth was chairman and chief executive of EMI Music UK And Ireland, and in his 26 years with the company he worked with the likes of Coldplay, Blur and Radiohead among others.

His departure follows the purchase of EMI – Britain’s only major label – by private equity group Terra Firma last year and was said to be "part of the ongoing restructuring of EMI Music", the The Daily Telegraph reports.

Wadsworth will not be replaced and his duties will be divided up. It is anticipated by industry insiders that there will be further changes as the label restructures.

well i want coldplay to continue many years furthur because i cannot stop listening to Chris martin written songs and dream about him.

I'll be happy if Coldplay keep making music, despite what label they are on, if any.
