i hardly know anything about him, but ive decided that i strongly dislike guy hands. how can he even think that the idea will be accepted by the vast majority of artists?! he's a moron.

i must say that even if coldplay got a sponsor, i'd be disgusted, but i'd still get the album, and i'd still probably like them as people. but i don't think we have much to worry about from them, like tracie said. they'd rather quit putting out music than sell out like that, i think. i mean, they don't even give their music to commericals. i dont think they'd go the other way and give commercials to their music.

but i'm just angry about the way the tide of the music business is turning. maybe i'm naive, but the record companies didnt really seem to be all that big and bad just a few years ago. what happened? i know they got bought out and all that, but christ. now the industry is down the tubes. i'm fine with the traditional way of releasing music fading into something new (like all artists pulling a radiohead or going indie), but i'm NOT fine with that if it means the music stops, even if it's only for a couple years. i'm not talking just coldplay here. big business has infiltrated the art world, and big business and music are oil and water, or they should be, i think. whatever happened to record execs that WERE creative types? the business needs to regress to where (i think...) it used to be, or it's going to sink. maybe it should sink, but the music should never STOP, like it's threatening to.

ok, this is getting long and ranty, but i just pulled the possibility of corporate sponsorship on one of my friends that doesnt have a current vested interest in the matter (like we/i do with coldplay), and she made some interesting points. she says as long as it doesnt affect the music, like as long as there arent commercials imbedded between tracks that you can't skip over, she doesnt really care. i mentioned that sponsorship would totally undermine the art and what art IS, and she said that art has been sponsored for hundreds of years, starting way back in the renaissance. and she's right, it has. but when it was sponsored by the medici family and whatever, it seemed to be because they actually CARED about the art, not because they knew the artist was big and putting their name on it would be monetarily beneficial to them. because i highly doubt that sudafed and nike and samsung will REALLY care about what theyre putting their names on, as long as its big and popular and respected. and to me, that's violating art.

and i honestly hope that the *poo* hitting the fan tomorrow means that coldplay's going to talk to us soon, through prospekt or whatever. (back to me talking about coldplay, not the fate of music as we know it :D).

These guys got into it for the same reason total unknowns like me did: For the love of the music. And no matter what happens to the Major labels and corporate BS, the music will NEVER stop. They're too passionate about it to ever let that happen.:D

In a world where honeydew is the money melon (don't ask ok, I don't even know what it means) and where money is almost growing off trees...the creative arts and the people who are passionate about it are out numbered. I'm the only one I know in my class who has creative ambitions...everyone else seems to want a high-paying job you can get straight out of collage. Whether it be a Lawyer, docter accountant or a freagin' shop assistant...I'm begining to worry that creativity and inspiration have been totally lost in the next generation (which is my generation)

well, i think they'll still create it, but i wonder more and more if the music will stop for everyday people like me who rely on the record companies or the internet to get it to me. if the business implodes, i think there probably will be music that's withheld and a drop in music releases if only because there needs to be time to think of the best way to get it out now that the record companies are in the toilet. i think it would make its comeback, definitely! but it just seems like an almost...unnatural, artificial progression in the world of music. it's not letting it evolve as it would have, having a jarring event let the outcome change a bit.

i think i need to stop talking because i'm beginning to not make sense to myself. my protests are getting weaker. goodnight!

^^Not surprised...my generation was raised on "follow your dreams... believe in yourself and it will happen" which basically meant that everyone wanted to be actors or directors or whatever and thought it could actually happen.

So we get tossed out in the real world and not only find out the hard way that it doesn't work like that, but we also have those same people yelling at us that we're spoiled brats with a sense of entitlement just because we actually listened to them.

The music world needs record companies...it can't exist properly without them (I don't want 3.49million Radioheads). But this collapse really is only to do with EMI, other record companies are doing fine...I think. Coldplay just need to say "f... off" to EMI and then go find themselves a better comapny!

I think it's more going to separate back into 2 or three tiers- ultra corporate for the lazy at one end and ultra artsy for internet junkies at the other.

Unfortunatly, that's a good way to be banned from making music or using your own name while you're in court wrangling over a lawsuit for years...

^ I know what you mean.

G'night, Chelsea. If you are still up reading, your arguments still make sense. But remember, the labels...the entire recording industry is relatively new. It's only been around as we know it since the 40s or 50s. In the old, old days, composers like Mozart or Beethoven would be commissioned by royalty (their patrons) to compose music. No patron, no money. (Mozart died broke!), I guess you could compare Sudafed or another sponsor to that system, lol, EW I don't want to think about that.

ANyone writing 'folk music' as opposed to sacred music didn't even get paid.

Fortunately we live in this technological era where artists can still promote themselves even without the labels, and believe me, even though the majority want those good jobs, there are still millions of ppl out there who want to be creative and make beautiful art and music.

Now my post is getting too long and making less sense to me,lol. All I'm saying is don't give up hope. It's hard when everything's up in the air like this, but Everything's Not Lost.:D

true....damn EMI, they're killing some of the best bands/artists out there!

Luckily, I have the pic below...it makes me forget everything that's happening.

^They have been for a while. I've been using an oldish dvd player as a cd player for a bit now, and was sad to discover that it doesn't like EMI's copy protection. So Hail to the Thief, X&Y, and KT Tunstall's Eye to the Telescope- which I bought proper copies of- keep freezing or skipping.

I found a good in-depth summary of the whole big mess for anyone interested in the wheretos and whyfors: Trouble at EMI

Interesting quote: "Friends say Hands is not moved by criticism. “He is not perturbed by controversy,” said one source. “Quite the reverse. If he’s not making waves, he’s not doing his job.”"

Hello everybody, today lets look at the face of evil!

Yes, its Mr.Guy Hands...

:D I was hoping for something more Elvis like "Shoots computer screen with revolver"

Rotten eggs are a lot easier to clean up than bullet-holes in my lovely new flat-screen monitor, lol.

True, true...but shooting stuff doesn't smell as bad an hour later.:P

^It does if you shoot people. If you shot Guy Hands, for example, he'd start to smell pretty bad decomposing. But since he already stinks, what difference would it make?:lol::lol:

Haha...we might as well just shoot him and get it over and done with...anyone got an AK-47?
