I just hope they have the decency to tell us whats going on. Right now it feels like they're abandoning us, though i know thats not their intention. I'd prefer if they come out and say the album won't be out as soon as they thought, rather than continue to keep us on our toes for an indefinate period of time. Thats whats REALLY killing me right now.

Why can't they buy their rights from EMI, and sell the album to another label? Maybe that's unaffordable, but it would get them back out on the circuit, and able to make new releases.. Just ideas..

Well, more time to perfect the album. I have no complaints! I'm glad Coldplay is actually speaking out on this. Record companies take advantage of their artists way too often and it seems like EMI is even more on the verge of a collapse at this point.

Damn its been long enough... not to rush it or anything but if its done its done get it to the fans!

Stuff the company, it should come down to the music in the end anyway. But I spose they can't really release it if there is problem with EMI, if theyre releasing it as an EMI album...damn all of this!!

OK, first of all...don't panic!

 

Second off, and I said this much better on another thread, the internet sounded the death nell for the music industry years ago. If the largest label, with all the biggest names can fall like this, the others are sure to follow, like dominos. Then what? Then we're all left (musicians, I mean) to do things like Radiohead have done. We're all on an equal playing feild where money doesn't decide who's best, but talent. If we have to wait a bit longer for the nwe CP album, and they get to do it on their own terms, without a bunch of suits with clipboards taking notes and offering 'advice' we're going to get a better album, and the band willl be happier with it. The labels have been a dying breed foryears now, and it's about time. As has already been pointed out, they steal from the artists, and only the top earners can survive. (Think about a band like Better Than Ezra. Great band, stuck in the middle, probably screwed atm, with or without their deal.) It's going to change, evolve, and leave alot of ppl confused for a while. In the end, it will be better for all of us hard-working musicians, and for that, I'll wait a little longer for the new album if I have to.

 

This has been a long time coming, and sad as it is, it can lead to new trends in the industry, by which we can all make a fair living. I for one salute the demise of the BIZ as we know it.

Haha well actually I've been whining about it to everyone OUTSIDE of coldplaying.com (they seem to think I'm obsessed - I mean come on :rolleyes:). But I reckon its probably better to be whiny on the forums than bore people who don't care either way (like I have). So by all means, continue :P

very bad timing indeed. i feel like this is the reason (or one of several reasons) why they've resisted telling us the release date till now. i bet they saw the storm with EMI coming and even though they may have originally planned to release it in march or something (which i would think means that they would tell us the release date soon), they held off making any announcement just in case the situation got worse. and i think robbie williams's strike may have been all the excuse the coldplay camp needed to show their disdain as well.

 

gahh. i understand the good things behind it, but really 99.9% of the time i just selfishly want them to suck it up and release the damn thing, and THEN work out their issues. if this turns into a stalemate like the WGA strike here in america where the sides won't talk to each other, i'll go absolutely nuts. i'll probably crack up.

^Me too, I need the new album in my hands soon or ill go mad. I really hope it dosent come out in May, the longest i can wait is April.

like i've said a million times before, as long as it's in 2008 like they promised, i can wait till december, as long as they TELL US WHEN like NOW so i can count down to it. in this sense, i feel like i'm waiting for the release date more than the album, but really i think i'm taking my excitement one step at a time.

^I'd like to see you countin' the days til december!! But it would suck if it came out any later than June becuase I might have to wait til 2010 to see them live! (Which is something I want equally as much as you want a release date)

Been digging through news reports for a while now, and here's some highlights. Talk about a hotdog factory.

 

So the big meeting(s) where mr. hands gets to astonish us with his brilliant ideas :dozey: are happening tomorrow.

 

Hopefully some sanity comes out of them. Though it looks more like the promised artist revolt. Heh... some reports I can't find again were saying that he had demanded that all managers AND their artists appear for them... uh, yeah right, your cluelessness. Later reports are only saying that the artists have been invited. (I so shouldn't admit that I ocassionally read this...) Chris is apparently in New York at the moment, so I don't think he'll show up, but you never know.

 

Kylie is blaming EMI for her album flopping, and may try to leave. Which only backs up what everyone is afraid of- EMI have not come up with any new models, but no longer even know the old model for successfully marketing an album. She's only sold about 315K copies since it was released LAST FALL. (Radiohead sold more than a third of that just last week in the US, and after their download)

 

The Verve are the latest big name to throw their hat in the ring and threaten to withhold their reunion album without some insurance that it will be released properly. So is there anyone else? Oh yeah, KT Tunstall- but she just released an album, and Lily Allen- who does have an album coming out- but considering certain comments about Radiohead I'm guessing she's on the company's side in this as well.

 

Robbie Williams manager has some issues with the term "strike". And I quote: "'On strike? I didn't actually use those terms', explained Clark

'What we actually said was it would be unrealistic to expect an artist - any artist to deliver an album while we have no idea where EMI are going', he told Music Week. after his comments were used in the media."

 

And just in case I hadn't made my point that they genuinely don't know what artists really want, EMI haven't made any official statements about the artist revolt, preferring to issue statements through anonymous :rolleyes: executives, but the gist is that they are "furious" and think this is all just Robbie Williams wanting more money. (Which may be true, but it means that they didn't listen to a word all the other managers said about being worried.)

 

AND MOST OBNOXIOUS OF ALL: "The next Coldplay album could be brought to you by Sudafed", under plans being unveiled by Guy Hands today to boost EMI's flagging earnings with corporate sponsorship. The Terra Firma chief executive told the FT his private equity group's plan for EMI would include several new ways of making money for artists."Football teams have very distinct corporate sponsorship. Why shouldn't some of the leading bands have the same sort of relationships?"

SPONSORS?! that's just disgusting. the music industry has survived and survived FINE (with only minor blips like this one) without SPONSORS. my god, that just makes me angry :angry:

 

and frankly it makes me MORE angry because i know that the artists TOTALLY arent going to go for that and will make the strike (or whatever the PC term is for it, but it really IS a strike) more likely to happen. if i were them and EMI suggested frigging sponsors i'd just stand up and leave. sponsorship, or at least public sponsorship, has always kind of rubbed me the wrong way anyway, but if it happens for ALBUMS and ARTISTS, i may blow my top. i mean, come ON. what a RIDICULOUS idea. sponsorship seems to defy what art and what music is about. its bad enough when its the other way round, with artists selling their songs to commercials. this is just despicable. if hands thinks he's going to get away with that mere suggestion, he's a moron.

 

well, i suppose the talks being held tomorrow might mean we'll get some info soon. i feel slightly snubbed by coldplay because usually there're pretty good at keeping us updated with what's going on. they have to tell us SOMETHING eventually, and i think it needs to be soon.

Yeah. I would be tempted to not buy the album just to spite them if that happened, even if it killed me.

 

It would be the moment that Coldplay lost all respect that they ever had completely.

Coldplay are very much against deals like that, unless it's something they believe in, so this would most likely convince them to join the revolt if nothing else did.

Maybe they're all in hiding....gosh, this is starting to sound like a war is going on! If Coldplay ever got sponser...I would simply give up on them, just like Chris said a while ago "Thanks for supporting us through thick and thin and thanks for taking all the shit for being a Coldplay fan"

 

I'm not sure I'll be able to support them much longer...

It is a war... from everything I've read about the guy, Mr. Hands isn't happy unless he is ticking people off. He's just never had to work with creative types before, and he doesn't want to realize that it's different. He's actually quite happy that he's stepping on so many toes at the moment.

Anyway, finished adding stuff to the monster post up there. Feel queasy from all the hotdogs for now, may add later.

 

The sh*t hits the fan tomorrow. They're saying about 1/3 of the company is going to receive pink slips, and more of these wonderful (gag me) ideas will be unveiled.
