June 23, 200818 yr I think this album has some parts that really really sound like Radiohead, and that may not have been an accident. Listen to: Cemeteries of London- 1:58 to 2:04 (Chris sounding a lot like Thom Yorke) 42-1:47 to 2:43 (guitar riffs really sound like Radiohead, especially during second half, also Chris "aahhh" sounds like Yorke on In Rainbows) Yet the whole album has a feel to it that's very Radiohead-ish. Weird sound effects(beginning of Strawberry Swing, beginning of CSC), more bizzare lyrics (Cemeteries, 42, CSC), and stuff like that. Please note, Im not saying this is a bad thing or that it's plagiarism. I just wondered if anyone else noticed these things and maybe thought this was a sort of shot of flattery toward Radiohead and maybe a little bit an attempt to gain their respect?
June 23, 200818 yr im not a fan of Radiohead at all. lets just say that to begin my biased opinion lol. Thom Yorkes voice is terrible in my mind. Coldplay are better in virtually everything they do.those "crazy sounds" aren't exactly patented by Radiohead. They were not the first ones to make cool sounds. Chris Martin will be the first to tell you that they "idolize"Radiohead, in my opinion Coldplays albums and songs especially the lyrics, are better written. so to answer your question,no,i dont think this cd was to gain Radioheads respect. this is just my opinion not an attack on you.

I know it was more of Pink Floyd who patented those sound effects, but Radiohead certainly did it well. I think Coldplay was trying to gain their respect cause like you said they idolize Radiohead, and Thom Yorke once called Coldplay "cheap pop music" so I think aspects of this album might have been trying to change that view. Just my opinion.
June 23, 200818 yr Umm, I don't find it similar to anything Radiohead have done. Perhaps in the variety of the instruments that were used. Which is great, I like Coldplay with something more than just piano and guitar if you know what I mean. someone said there's "15 Step clapping" in a song off VLV, but I haven't noticed it.
June 23, 200818 yr I think Chris just wrote what he wanted to write. which turned out f'in amazing lol. once again i do believe Coldplay is better than Radiohead. Chris wrote an amzing album. Maybe he was more determined to write such a great album because of all the critics comments. to that degree i agree with you.

June 23, 200818 yr I think Coldplay has always been influenced by Radiohead, right from the start. Of course that's not a bad thing, as there are many bands out now that seem influenced by Coldplay and there will no doubt be more in the future.
June 23, 200818 yr Author But does anyone else think he's imitating Thom Yorke a bit in that spot of Cemeteries of London?
June 23, 200818 yr Ya no I don't agree with you. 15 step clapping as well? Ha, last time i checked hand claps have been used since the days of the Beatles (see Eight Days a Week),

I agree with you fullheartedly. i wouldn't say though that they specifically meant to make it like Radiohead. that's just how it came out. i think CSC sounds the most like a Radiohead song if you ask me. But whatever, i think the album is different in many ways than Radiohead, but there are similarities there. and btw, I love BOTH bands, and Radiohead puts on one of the most amazing shows of all time, even if you aren't a huge fan, it will amaze in ways you can't imagine
June 23, 200818 yr Thom Yorkes voice is terrible in my mind. Ouch. That is soooo NOT true. I bet even Chris Martin himself will agree with me here.
June 23, 200818 yr Ya no I don't agree with you. 15 step clapping as well? Ha, last time i checked hand claps have been used since the days of the Beatles (see Eight Days a Week),I wasn't saying that Radiohead invented it or because they use that clapping, Coldplay can't. ;)

I thought I was crazy for a while there.
June 24, 200818 yr Ouch. That is soooo NOT true. I bet even Chris Martin himself will agree with me here. he prob. would but thats his opinion not mine. Yorke to me just sounds like hes whining or something in everything he does.
June 24, 200817 yr Well,I don't know, but one thing is sure Radiohead is one of the greatest bands at the moment, just like coldplay, but it's also less comercial and perhaps better, but we love our unperfect COLDPLAY
July 1, 200817 yr we're talkin' about Coldplay.. so i can say there is nothing we can compare with Coldplay.. ;)
July 11, 200817 yr to me... nothing on this album sounds like radiohead whatsoever. i'm an avid radiohead and coldplay fan but really... i hardly see their similarites at all. the comparisons between the two always confuse me. but i think out of all 4 albums viva la vida sounds the LEAST like radiohead. cemeteries of london is one of my favorites and that part where chris sings 'god is in the houses...' reminds me nothing of thom. i think its just a piece of classic chris martin. and the percussion in 15 Step is so crazy and unique i don't think anyone couls make anything sound like it.... especially nothing on this album. just my opinion though...
July 11, 200817 yr I think it's fair to say they're both very introspective at times, but Coldplay has done more extroverted types of songs than Radiohead. Radiohead reminds me more of playing albums at the 16 &1/3 speed on turntables..:P
July 11, 200817 yr Thom Yorke is fucken stupid for saying coldplay is"cheap pop music''.................hes just pissed cause coldplay is better and more popular than radiohead..............Thom is just a HATER like many people are of coldplay.........but thats just my opinion.... so ya!!:D COLDPLAY IS THE BEST!!
