Q. Hey, Oracle. I'm American and the way British people say "aluminum" cracks me up. They say it like "al-oo-min-ee-um". I was wondering (assuming you're British) if you find the way Americans say it nearly as amusing as I. Thanks! :)

The Oracle replies:

We actually pronounce it al-yoo -min-ee-um and as far as I see (hear) it, you guys say aloo-me-num, which I find funny too!

  • I can't give you the reasonings on why things changed, but I can give you an update from what I observed. The Oracle was run by Debs Wild. Debs is still with the band and helps out fans, for exam

Q. Hello Oracle!

I would like to know what's the difference between this Parachutes and this one.

Why are there two of them?

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYZYqkAM9uI]YouTube- ‪Parachutes - Coldplay‬‎[/ame]

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceWk5tPVgcw&feature=related]YouTube- ‪Coldplay - Parachutes (Full Length Version)‬‎[/ame]

The Oracle replies:

The difference is immense; they're not the same song. The former is Coldplay's Parachutes (plural) and the latter is Guster's Parachute (singular).

So there are not two versions of Parachutes, just the one.

So, is it actually spelled aluminIum over there instead of just aluminum? If so, I suppose that would be the reason. Although I didn't think something on the periodic table of elements could be spelled multiple ways.

Yes, the American version is different from the British one. :)

It's all Webster's fault that we're wrong!

I should start pronouncing it the correct way and see how people react.

Q. Hello Oracle.

I'm sixteen and I'm trying to grow up and become more mature. But I have whiney friends and giggly sisters and I'm a sophomore. I'm trying to take responsibility and re invent myself into a smarter, more mature person who can handle my own business (thank you very much) but I don't want to lose my sense of humor or not be able to laugh. Any ideas? Thank you Oracle. I really, really do love Coldplay.

The Oracle replies:

I say chill out and enjoy being sixteen. You'll have plenty of situations come up in the future that will require a grown-up seriousness and you may yearn for this time you were 16! You can be responsible of course but you know what, just let maturity come to you, don't try and make it happen any sooner.

By the way, getting old does not mean you lose your sense of humour. It's all about suitable behaviour so obviously laughing at an inappropriate time isn't advisable but there's no rule saying you can't have fun past a certain age.

Q. O Oracle,

I was wondering who did the cover Parachutes and how they got the effect of the lit spinning globe and such. I was really stunned by the artwork and that was ultimately what compelled to buy the record, which in turn created my lifelong love of Coldplay.

Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

It was actually a lamp so the light was already inside the globe. The shutter speed of the camera is key to the actual effect.

Q. Oracle, can you help me please? I just started dating this guy a couple months ago. He's like so perfect. Anyway, he just got out of a really, really serious relationship. Everyone thinks I'm just the rebound. He says it's serious. How do I know if I'm just a rebound or if it's more than a fling?

The Oracle replies:

Many people do go from one relationship straight into another and for some it's not a problem. It can depend on many factors whether it works in the long term. It's for you to decide not me or your friends but be wary; he may still have some issues from his previous relationship. Take it slowly and see how things go but ultimately look after yourself and if you ever feel that it's not right, do what's best for you.

Q. Did Jonny specifically choose the same black top hat as Sherlock Holmes in the Christmas Message 2006 because of his liking for the book/movie?

Thanks

The Oracle replies:

The idea behind the hats was initially inspired by The Christmas Carol look so it wasn't anything to do with Sherlock at all.

Q. Oracle,

A while back you answered a question about Chris not playing the guitar on Yellow in Live 2003. Why did he not want to play? And do the technicians/backstage people play some instruments that the band can't/don't want to play?

Also, do you think Chris Martin looks a bit like Formula 1 driver Jenson Button, or is it just me?!

Jim

The Oracle replies:

At that time Chris wanted to do something different during the song to make it more interesting for the audience and for himself. It was decided that Matt McGinn would play the guitar part on that tour but generally speaking the techs don't play instruments; the band do. There are occasions where backing tracks are used for instance, the introduction to Life in Technicolor...

You're not the only one to comment on a similarity between Chris and Jenson but although I see why people say that, I don't really think its a great likeness.

And Sven's question:

Q. Hi Oracle !

It's true or not?

From twitter:

"Chris Martin wrote the song Yellow after a family holiday to Osaka in 1996".

Thank You

Sven

The Oracle replies:

Yellow wasnt written until 1999 so no that's not at all true. There wasn't a family holiday in Osaka either! The twitter page you saw will have absolutely no connection to anyone in the band so is not a trusted source of information. God only knows where people get some of this stuff from in the first place...

Q. Hey, my girlfriend is waiting for me to propose... but I am afraid of being married. What should I do? Please help me Oracle...

The Oracle replies:

Do nothing! Well, not nothing but do not propose. No-one should EVER feel pressurized into getting married no matter how long you have been with someone and no matter what age. You do not owe it to the other person.

If you can, maybe talk to your girlfriend and gently explain your reasons for not rushing into this HUGE decision or ask her why her great need and urgency. I mean, if things are going well, why change it? And if things aren't going that great a wedding will not fix it.

It's tricky as I know people who have delivered ultimatums "marry me or it's over" but that confuses me. If you love someone, you're with them and if someone feels the need for greater commitment I'm not entirely sure that their reasons are often insecurity rather than love. Call me cynical if you like but I don't understand why there's a need to have a ceremony unless both people want it? Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of marriage but only if it's a mutual decision. Old fashioned as I am I think I'd get married if I was bringing new life into the world but again, it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Q. Sometime ago I saw the last chapter of season 6 of the TV show Grey's Anatomy, and in one scene I recognized Chris Martin's voice, am I right? In the last chapter there's a Coldplay song? If I am right, dear Oracle, could you tell me which song is it?

Tks a lot!

XOXO

The Oracle replies:

The last episode of Season 6 of Grey's Anatomy was called Death and All His Friends and there are three songs featured, one of which was [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymJvCqECR44]In My Veins[/ame] by Andrew Belle which I assume is the one you thought could have been Coldplay but isn't.

FYI the other two tracks in that episode were Mariah McManus - Unarmed and Landon Pigg - The Way It Ends.

Q. Hi Oracle,

Given that it's Friday the 13th I thought I'd ask if you were superstitious?

The Oracle replies:

I have to say that no, I am not superstitious at all. In fact, I walk under ladders and everything just to prove theories wrong

Q. Dear Oracle,

This has been driving me insane for the past week, and I was wondering if you could help me. I was watching an episode of Grey's Anatomy from season 2. The name of the episode is called As We Know It (espisode 17), and it involves a patient who has an unexploded bomb inside of him. At the very end of this episode there is a song, which is played, and I could have sworn that it was a Coldplay song. However, it wasn't familiar to me, and I searched and searched for that song, but could not find the name of it. I was wondering if you know what this song is called? Thank so much for even allowing me to ask you this question!

BeSt WiShEs,

Lauren

The Oracle replies:

That particular episode didn't feature any Coldplay songs but there were a lot of artists in this one...

Here's a list of all the songs which should help you track down the one you loved:

I Tell Myself by Correatown

Homebird by Foy Vance

Stay Where You Are Ambulance LTD

Unlike Me by Kate Havnevik

World Spins Madly On by The Weepies

Breathe (2AM) by Anna Nalick

Back In The Wild by Greenskeepers

No, she must have meant "In The Sun"!!!

It was a double ep if I remember correctly so maybe Debs only found the music for the other half...

EDIT: wrote to the Oracle about it!

Two questions in a row about Grey's Anatomy? wtf?

I'm surprised in the first one she didn't mention that the episode was titled "Death and All His Friends". Not that I watch the show, I just happened to notice it before the news came on that night.
