The contract could yield the band an estimated $15 million, according to people close to the negotiations who were not authorized to speak about them publicly. “Universal are forward thinking, creative and hands-on music people,” the band said in a statement. “We really look forward to working with them.” In addition to new recordings, the deal calls for a thorough new release of the band’s catalog online. With the new arrangement, which takes effect immediately, Universal will distribute all of the Rolling Stones’ recordings for the first time; the company had distributed the Stones’ music from before 1971, released on the Abkco label, while EMI had distributed most of the material issued after that, beginning with the 1971 album “Sticky Fingers.” EMI will continue to control the band’s lucrative publishing rights.
