during the concert...i noticed the johnny was using more than one guitar. do u need more than one guitar to play all of coldplay's songs or is it possible with one?

Johnny uses multiple guitars mainly because he uses different tunings for different songs and he likes utilizing different tones from different guitars. but while he has multiple guitars, most of them are fender thinline telecasters and sound roughly the same (although his brown walnut tele has a higher action for easier sliding). Jonny will occasionally bring in his old jazzmaster because of it's unique tone for tracks like chinese sleep chant and how you see the world. For violet hill he also brings in a Gibson Les Paul for a different sustained tone, and he performs/performed daylight with Chris's 12-string.

 

But that aside, you don't need a les paul to play violet hill or a jazzmaster to play chinese sleep chant...you can play pretty much every coldplay song with a standard guitar (given you adjust the tuning accordingly). BTW, welcome aboard the coldplaying wagon! :D

(sorry about all those mistakes in it)

On the 2007 Latin American tour, he played Daylight on his Walnut Thinline, so that goes to show you the guitar is of secondary importance to many other factors in playing a song.

As has been said before, its usually a matter of the tuning. Instead of re-tunning one guitar multiple times he just has multiple guitars with different tunings. Other artists will use a different guitar based on the guitar properties as compared to how the song is played, and even some use different guitars simply for the "feel" or "aesthetic" value towards the song itself. You can do that if you make lots of money....lol

I'm a beliver in being able to get the desired tones from most guitars, if you have the right effects etc it's not that hard, I've got one of the new VG Stratocasters which makes changing tone very very simple :)

I tend to agree with that. The only exception being the age old single coil vs. humbucker divide which IMHO is one of the very few legitimate things that drastically alter/limit a guitar's potential tone.

 

I guess I also believe in ergonomics, some guitars are simply more easy to play for some people because of factors like shape, weight, neck size etc. (which IMHO is also a hugely overlooked factor for a lot of people in deciding what guitar to play.)
