A general mobilization of the reservists of Georgia was announced by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on the morning of August 8, the Novosti-Gruzia information agency reports. It had been reported in the media earlier that citizens were assembling in Lokomotiv Stadium in Tbilisi, but Georgian authorities have not yet confirmed that a mobilization is underway. The news agency noted that more than 100,000 people between the ages of 25 and 45 have been trained as reservists in Georgia in recent years.

A large-scale military conflict began in the unrecognized republic of South Ossetia on the night of August 7. By morning, Georgian units had captured Znaur District of South Ossetia and advanced on Tskhinvali. In Tbilisi, the actions are being called “an operation to restore the constitutional order.” South Ossetian authorities have appealed to Russia for military aid.

 

Three Peacekeepers of Russia Wounded in South Ossetia

Three peacekeepers of Russia were wounded during Georgia’s assault on South Ossetia. The building of peacekeepers’ headquarters was damaged as well, Interfax reported.

Georgia shelled headquarters of Russia’s peacekeepers from the Grad systems. The warplanes launched the assault against South Ossetia at night from August 7 to August 8. The trucks with humanitarian aid from North Ossetia to Tskhinvali were attacked as well.

 

According to Tbilisi, the troops conquered around a dozen of villages in South Ossetia by early August 8. Imedi even reported the capture of Tskhinvali but this information hasn’t been confirmed yet.

 

The two-day death toll could be from 15 to 27, according to various estimates.

 

Meanwhile, Georgia opened an international media center in Gori village to cover the war in South Ossetia. Gori is located roughly 30km from Tskhinvali, the capital of unrecognized republic. The media center will work for Georgia’s and foreign reporters 24 hours, Georgia Online announced with reference to Rustavi 2 TV Channel.

 

Saakashvili Accuses Russia of Military Aggression, Cossack Get Ready to Fight

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has accused Russia of “military aggression on a broad scale,” Novosti-Gruzia information agency reports. He demanded that Russia cease the bombing of Georgian cities. Russia is not officially interfering in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict, although Georgian media claim that military aircraft approaching from the direction of Russia are bombing Georgian cities. Georgian journalists also claim that the Georgian military has downed a Russian plane.

Earlier, Georgian Minister of State for Reintegration Teimuraz Yakobashvili urged Russia to intervene as a peacemaker in the conflict. Tbilisi officially claims to control a large part of South Ossetia. Georgian forces are storming Tskhinvali, but they have not been successful in taking the city yet. Saakashvili declared a general mobilization of the reserves in an address to the nation.

 

In the meantime, Cossacks from the Voronezh Cossack District of the Great Don Host have begun assembling volunteers to aid South Ossetia, Ataman of the Voronezh Cossack District Nikolay Sapelkin told Interfax on Friday. Sapelkin said that “The Cossacks cannot remain impartial to the fate of a fraternal republic.” He continued, “In the condition of aggression from Georgia, the Don Cossacks of Voronezh Region, who support the course of the South Ossetian authorities toward independence, are prepared to take a stand among the defenders of the republic.”

 

Sapelkin explained that “All volunteers will be taken by bus to Stavropol, where the mobilization staff of the Great Don Host is already operating. From there, they will be sent to South Ossetia, where they will serve in special units, particularly the OMON special forces, under contract.”

Basically, "Georgia" (some people in Georgia) launched a sneak attack on Thursday night with help from some mercenaries.

 

Some of these mercenaries were found dead and they suspect that they might be American and Ukrainian. Not 100% confirmed.
