Darlene_Ihnfsa
first of all, sorry if a thread like that already is somewhere on the board, mesage for the mods, feel free to move this thread to another sub-forum that will be better in case is on the wrong one. i'd like to ask to all music-lovers here (so all us i guess): when you discover a new band or solo artist (that you've never gave a listen even if they've been working since decades) for a friend advice, you hear them randomly somewhere... 1. do you tend to like most the first works you've heard of them and so the first album you hear of them? 2. do you get to become interested and to know further about their works (previous and newest works, collaborations, other works related with music or arts)? 3. if so you end liking their first albums or the lastest? 4. you get to like a band just for a mood you are when you listen it, so when your mood changes you don't use to listen them that often? 5. if they've collaborated with other bands like being their producer or song-writer for some songs, you end liking those bands too, may be because you kind of consider them as a copy or other side of the same artist that you'd like to know too, or you like them for their similar but orignal work? 6. if the songs are in a foreign language you try to learn it? or you just like that artist for the music they play and you don't care about the lyrics at all. 7. and about the other artistical skills, you like them because they are really talented on it too, or just because you like their music and so you support them no matter what they do (painting, photography, writing...). feel free to discuss (not to fight), ask more questions, and give examples. cSandra
Hi, is this some kind of a survey? :D Anyhow, I'd like to answer your questions. ;) 1. do you tend to like most the first works you've heard of them and so the first album you hear of them? The first song that I've heard or was adviced by a friend seems to be the one that make me like them or not. So to answer this question, I guess yes. 2. do you get to become interested and to know further about their works (previous and newest works, collaborations, other works related with music or arts)? Only if I liked the song and singer or band. 3. if so you end liking their first albums or the lastest? It depends on which is better. :D 4. you get to like a band just for a mood you are when you listen it, so when your mood changes you don't use to listen them that often? Not really. If I like the band, it fits on my regular mood or any ordinary day. 5. if they've collaborated with other bands like being their producer or song-writer for some songs, you end liking those bands too, may be because you kind of consider them as a copy or other side of the same artist that you'd like to know too, or you like them for their similar but orignal work? I don't tend to like them just because they collaborated with the band I liked actually. :D 6. if the songs are in a foreign language you try to learn it? or you just like that artist for the music they play and you don't care about the lyrics at all. If I can't understand the language, tendency is, I don't listen to it anymore. :D 7. and about the other artistical skills, you like them because they are really talented on it too, or just because you like their music and so you support them no matter what they do (painting, photography, writing...). I like them because they are really talented. Take Brandon Boyd for example. I am much impressed with him writing a book. :)
Cirrus Minor
This post is gonna be a novel. Well I like doing things completely, do if I don't get bored by the band in between, I tend to progressively get all their albums, then EPs, then B-Sides, then demo-tapes and everything they recorded alone or with people. What's happening to me is quite a good example : about three years ago, I discovered The Mars Volta, which I now have fallen in love with (I mention them anytime I can :-) ), and now I'm dicovering bands the members were in before (At The Drive In, De Facto, The Fall On Deaf Ears, Los Dregtones), their solo works (Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez) and since At the Drive In actually split into what would become The Mars Volta and Sparta, I just started listening to Sparta. With time, I lost most of my interest in the first TMV song I listened to (The Widow), but if you think of Radiohead, the first song I ever listened to remains my favourite (it's No Surprises). Well it can be summed up like that : if i like a band I get to know their whole universe, and time makes me have favourite stuff, regardless of what I listened first. About the language. I always learn what I like. If I don't know the language, it's gonna take longer, but I will learn and sometimes translate the lyrics so that I can really understand what the song is about. That's quite how I learned English.
Space Cadet
when you discover a new band or solo artist (that you've never gave a listen even if they've been working since decades) for a friend advice, you hear them randomly somewhere... 1. do you tend to like most the first works you've heard of them and so the first album you hear of them? It depends on what I hear first. For instance I heard Mando Diao's most recent at the time album when I first discovered them and didn't like it very much, but later on discovered how astoundingly brilliant their very first album was, and that's my favorite. I still don't care for their later stuff. On the other hand there are plenty of bands that I got into their later stuff but not their earlier, even though some people consider the earlier stuff superior. 2. do you get to become interested and to know further about their works (previous and newest works, collaborations, other works related with music or arts)? I usually try to get an idea of their range. 3. if so you end liking their first albums or the lastest? Depends on the band, the introduction, and the quality of their various works. 4. you get to like a band just for a mood you are when you listen it, so when your mood changes you don't use to listen them that often? Mood specific bands, yes- I have to wait for that mood or a time when I'm willing to get into that mood to listen. Stars and the Shins are two big ones, I have days I love them to bits and others I just can't stand how quiet or poppy they are. 5. if they've collaborated with other bands like being their producer or song-writer for some songs, you end liking those bands too, may be because you kind of consider them as a copy or other side of the same artist that you'd like to know too, or you like them for their similar but orignal work? I will often look up other bands they have worked with. Whether I like the other stuff or not depends on the other stuff. 6. if the songs are in a foreign language you try to learn it? or you just like that artist for the music they play and you don't care about the lyrics at all. I love it when I don't know what the singer is saying. It lets me focus on the sounds of the words rather than the words themselves, so I appreciate the song in a totally different way. I think it's a habit I picked up listening to music in Gaelic as a kid. Besides, misheard lyrics can be so much fun [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWqC4KKiVbU]YouTube - Doctor Who (Ten) - Caramelldansen misheard lyrics[/ame] :sneaky: 7. and about the other artistical skills, you like them because they are really talented on it too, or just because you like their music and so you support them no matter what they do (painting, photography, writing...). I like music if there's something to it that I like. Whether it's because it's really creative, or it makes the little hairs on the back of my neck stand up, or it's emotionally moving, or there's some little thing they're doing with the chords I like, or it has a lot of energy. Basically I like it or I don't.
Black Rose
If I like a support band I try to track down any albums they have done etc.
Darlene_Ihnfsa
bump.. thanks for everyone answer's :D @ Cirrus Minor: A good novel btw ;) 1. do you tend to like most the first works you've heard of them and so the first album you hear of them? i tend to listen them gradually and chronologically, from their first works to the newest, to see their progression. And i end liking their first stuff i've listened (that use to be their last work) and their first work  strange, but sometimes i don't like the mid albums they've released. (It has happened with last bands i got to be a "hard-core" listener). 2. do you get to become interested and to know further about their works (previous and newest works, collaborations, other works related with music or arts)? I do look for info about them, to know who they've worked with and what other things they've done. If they have other artistical works i try to get info about them too. If they've been on other bands or so i try to give them a listen to see the progression of the artist. (That makes me reforce my interest on the artist and if i get to that point is 'cause i truly consider them talented). 3. if so you end liking their first albums or the lastest? I've already answered that on the first post, i tend to like the last or pre-last album and the first one they've done. 4. you get to like a band just for a mood you are when you listen it, so when your mood changes you don't use to listen them that often? Sometimes i'm more to listen only piano songs, other to rocky music so... kind of that, but is not that i don't listen them anymore, just that i'm not that "obsessed". Mainly the music i listen to depends on the mood i am, so if some artist has music for different moods i listen them for long time. 5. if they've collaborated with other bands like being their producer or song-writer for some songs, you end liking those bands too, may be because you kind of consider them as a copy or other side of the same artist that you'd like to know too, or you like them for their similar but orignal work? As i've said before, i get to be interested in other works of them, 'cause i get to see some talent on them and so i am curious about which other sides they have, and so i tend to like them, and those other works can be noticied on the other artists but they are original too. 6. if the songs are in a foreign language you try to learn it? or you just like that artist for the music they play and you don't care about the lyrics at all. I firstly give a listen only paying attention to the music, then to the lyrics, and so if they songs are on a foreign language i try to get what to them say, generally. 7. and about the other artistical skills, you like them because they are really talented on it too, or just because you like their music and so you support them no matter what they do (painting, photography, writing...). I consider their other works, if them are good i like them, but not 'cause their previous musical works, but i am critical with both things.
