CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2

"A woman." Chris said slowly. "In a white dress."

Will could feel his face getting red. "Yes."

"Attractive?"

"Chris." Will couldn’t help but chuckle.

The two of them were silent for a few seconds. "Are you sure it was your first birthday?" Chris asked. "That was kind of… a while ago. No offense, mate."

"I know. That’s the other weird part. I didn’t remember anything about my first birthday until then. God, my mom was so young." The image of her smiling at him was still fresh in his mind.

Chris sat back in his chair and picked at a bowl of nuts on the table. "I’m confused. Then how do you know that it was your real first birthday?"

Will stood up from the table, walked into the living room and picked up the photo album he’d been staring at all morning. Chris watched as he put it in front of him, and sat back down. "It looked just like that. Oh, and the woman isn‘t in those pictures. I looked."

Chris flipped through the old pictures, dust making a tiny explosion each time the pages smacked together. "Have you looked at these recently?"

"Not since my mother died." He said quietly, staring at a picture of her kissing Will on the cheek. "That was fifteen years ago."

"I really don’t know what to tell you." he grabbed another handful of nuts. "I guess this is what they mean when they say ‘going nuts’."

"Shut up."

About an hour after Chris left, Will couldn’t stop thinking about that woman in white, so he decided to call his sister Beth. "Hello?" She sounded just like his mother.

"Beth, it’s me." He bit his tongue.

"Oh, hey Will! Jenny put that down! No, no stop hitting your sister. No. Sorry, just a little busy." She panted.

Will smiled. "I don’t know how you deal with it."

"I don’t." She said. "I hand them over to Dave and lock myself in the bedroom. What’s up, hun?"

"I need to ask you a question, and it might sound weird."

She chuckled. "Try it."

"Do you remember my first birthday?"

There was a silence on the other line, and Will thought about immediately laughing it off. "Um." She thought for a few seconds. "Um, yeah, I think so. It was at the first house, right?"

"Right. Do you remember who was there?"

She sighed. "What’s this about, Will?"

"Can you just answer the question?"

"Aunt Marie, Uncle Davie." She paused. "Mom, of course."

"Uhuh." Will cut her off. "Anyone in a white dress?"

More silence. "N…nope, no I don’t remember a white dress."

"Are you sure?" He asked, feeling his stomach flip.

"Mhm."

"How sure?"

"Pretty sure." Will heard something bang and then screams. "No, David get back here! Don’t jump on the dog. Will, I gotta go."

And the line dropped.
