For Pascal Palomino, it was like a wet, sloppy kiss from Canada.

 

The Montreal-born musician, who's now living in London, England, walked through the unusually quiet capital yesterday, and found a reason to smile at the thought that 30 cm of snow was enough to conquer the fabled strong-hold of the British empire.

 

"It's funny, that everything's been a mess -- the trains were stopped and businesses closed -- but back home in Canada, it would be just another winter day," said 29 year old Pascal, as he worked the bar at, where else, the Maple Leaf pub in London last night.

 

On Monday, after getting hit by an historic storm, London transit was at a standstill and 8,000 schools remained closed yesterday. Ironically, even a Coldplay concert was cancelled.

 

In a city of 7.5 million people, there's no snowplow.

 

The weather not only made the front pages of the city's famed Fleet St. papers, it was-- except for Olympic golden boy Michael Phelps being pictured allegedly smoking marijuana from a bong -- largely all anyone was talking about. A record number of TV viewers tuned into British programing, as people stayed home from work.

 

One popular youtube video shows British police, after responding to a call of kids tossing snowballs at passing cars, taking on the teens in a snow fight.

 

Another 25 cm was being forecast to hit Britain by Thursday, as city officials began to experience another storm -- this one, of protest that they should have been better prepared.

 

The Times of London reported that countries more used to dealing with Old Man Winter -- including Russia and the U. S. -- were largely rolling their eyes at how the white stuff had taken the U. K. capital by storm.

 

But the paper, online, noted some sympathy offered up by a reader named Leslie in Toronto.

 

She wrote: "It's very easy to make fun of Londoners who have never experienced the weather we get here in Canada.

 

"(But) don't feel bad. We called out the army 10 years ago in Toronto when we had a big snowstorm. We will never live it down."
