What Happened to Coldplay?

Featured Replies

There's much more color like they say on VLV

Totally agree. VLV is a wonderful album, everything from the music to the album artwork and the live shows has just been amazing. How can you say it's bland? It is the least bland of the lot.

Having said that, no Coldplay album is bland. They are all brilliant :D

Well, I've noticed that if you listen to each Coldplay album, the style changes slightly. Parachutes was very acoustic, easy listening over all... But it still sounded Coldplay... A Rush of Blood was more up-tempo, and piano was definetley used alot more (and personally I believe it was the most commercial album)... But it still sounded like Coldplay... X&Y introduced more electronic sounds, such as synthesizers... But it still sounded like Coldplay... And lastly, there is Viva La Vida. Well, Coldplay obviously took a larger step in changing their sound this time. You can easily hear the Irish and Spanish influences... But guess what? IT STILL SOUNDED LIKE COLDPLAY... Sure, Viva la Vida isn't my favorite album by them. But it's still brilliant. These guys are unique. Anyone could easily notice that. I mean, how many other pop songs do hear on the radio that consist of an Orchestra and Tympanies? Not too many. Anyway, not everyone has to agree with me, but I respect Coldplay for experimenting with their sound.

TOTALLY AGREE!

Maybe Coldplay has changed their sound to something more "pop" if you wanna say it, but its still brilliant and thats what matters! Eventhought, my favorite album stills being AROBTTH. There's something about it that I cannot explain, I just love it (even A Whisper, probably the most hated song by coldplayers along with The Hardest Part).

PD: I also have to agree with the person that said that the acoustic versions of Lost and Lovers in Japan are better than the album ones.

I think VLV is the best album Coldplay have released. Songs like 'Lost!' and 'Lovers in Japan' are two of the best songs they've written. Saying that though I do love the older tracks as well, but I just prefer Coldplay's new sound.

it's not that i "prefer the new sound" becuase VLV isn't my favorite coldplay album, but the fact that they leaped miles out of their comfort zone to do it is held in high respect. i love all the albums, and i can appreciate them all in different ways. i don't necessarily agree with you saying that lost! and lovers in japan are two of the best songs but we are all entitled to our opinions.

Parachutes sure is genius, but VLV sure isn't bland. There are sounds and patterns used in VLV that i've never really heard anywhere else.

:)

*raises eyebrow*

Miley Cyrus is not the be-all and end all to pop music. There's plenty of other bands that are considered to be pop that are fantastic too.

Not to mention that there was plenty of bad pop before Miley.

Honestly, I have some difficulty finding pop in VLV outside of the title track, and even then, it's not "pop" in a traditional sense. Some of the songs like LIJ are certainly more peppy than the older Coldplay norm, but like I said, I think it's still outnumbered by the amount of low-key tracks.

Mmm, some of the songs are just more upbeat and layered with sound, but definately still 'rock' in a sense.

I think it's a good thing that Coldplay went in a new direction with their sound for VLV. A lot of the tracks on the previous albums sound quite similar to one another. This doesn't mean I don't like the other albums, I just think that VLV is a bit more exciting and I'm pleased that they moved out of their comfort zone.
