Actually we do HAVE to. But thats because Im a shade off the REAL northern Ireland, everyone here is Catholic and I live 3 miles from the border.

 

20 miles up north and its not much of an option.

Around my area (good old Tyrone - the most happening place in the world ) anyhoo, yes, so Irish is taught in most (perhaps all methinks ) of the Catholic schools and it's also an option in Intergrated (Catholic & Protestant) schools.

 

As I went to a Protestant school I never learned, but back in the day my Nana had to when she grew up o'er the border in Dhun na nGall She still remembers how to count 1,2,3 in Irish
