too many shows

Featured Replies

Why does a show have to sell out to be considered a success? They are regularly playing to 12,000+ fans at their shows, everywhere they go. They are playing 3 shows this summer in Southern California, and have sold out the largest venue - the Home Depot Centre, which for soccer, holds 27,000 - not sure how many seats with the configuration for Coldplay. There are tickets available for the Irvine show, but I'd stiil say it's at least 80% sold out, and that holds 15,000. Same with San Diego...that's 3 shows within 120 miles of each other. Obviously, people want to see them, so why not tour?

Exactly! There will always be a demand for Coldplay. And alot of the tickets left, people are selling on eBay and such, and are expensive. People can't afford concerts as much as they could in the past, so I say Coldplay is still doing DAMN well! [:

The Home Depot Center has a listed capcity of over 30,000 for an end stage concert. I'm sure it varies by act, but still if they sold it out that's an impressive feat for any band.

I think a lot of the "failure" talk was spurred by a few snarky media articles that made the rounds online last week that they "only" drew around 12,000 in Hershey (in a venue that seats around 30,000).

It should also be pointed out that a lot of people really don't like amphitheater venues.

I was looking for more tickets for Home Depot and there were just single tickets left. So if it seats 30,000, that's a great turnout.

Now that I got out my map, I'm seeing they played (or were scheduled to play) 4 shows in PA - I think that's great of them. Getting closer to more fans, so they don't have to travel as far to see them - how many bands do that? Yes, if they'd scheduled fewer shows, attendance might have been higher per show, but I feel they're reaching out to more fans this way.

I wish I could see them more than the 2 times I will this summer, but I have a husband and 4 kids who keep rolling their eyes at mom and her obsession, lol.

I'm only seeing them once this summer (at alpine valley), but since they're one of only two bands I'll go to an amphitheater show to see, that's still pretty good for me...

Once is still good. Have you ever seen them in concert before??

Haha, I like that ^^^^^^^. It's not an obsession, it's just LOVE FOR COLDPLAY. [:

This summer's show will be my 8th show overall and my 3rd on the VLV tour.

4 shows in PA as against 3 in London?!

Getting closer to more fans? Yes - in the US...

but not in the UK

arguably not in most of the rest of Europe

definitely not in Asia, Central or South America, or Africa.

U2 are charging $300/ticket. Is that what you all want? Less shows for 3 times the cost? And I know Lore feels let down that the band went to Latin America and didn't bring their X&Y set up, but I would have KILLED to see them in such small venues and them coming out at the hotel every day signing stuff and smoozing with the fans. That doesn't EVER happen now days. So stop bitching because your ass was down there every day. :P

I agree they need to go to Latin America but their show cost a lot to put on and will the fans there be able to afford it or will the band be ripped to shreads in the press again over ticket prices? As for the UK, your a bunch of haters and the band always gets crap press there. Jonny should just move to Texas because we all luff him here.

"But for Coldplay's sake they should rather play cities than rural areas "

See, I'm of the opposite viewpoint. I think it's really cool to see such a major band go to places where they don't get major acts very often. As someone who spent his entire life until the last few years living in a "rural" area away from a major city, I think it's a nice change to see such a major tour making a few stops in places their peers would look over without a second thought.

I totally agree with you on this. It's nice to see an artist go to some places that probably get overlooked because they are not the big metropolitan areas. When some areas get a major artist to appear in their area it's seen as a major coup and it builds excitement for many people.

well, I think also that they should play more gigs in the UK and should go to south america (but I still think they will find their way down there) however I can understand why the play so many gigs in the US, US is a much bigger country and you do have to play it when you are "hot" if you miss that point you won't ever get it back.

Comparing to U2 is not really as they been around for like 20 years longer and played over those years plenty, plenty of gigs in the US!

On a personally level I do think the Wembley shows are going to be quite special and different as simply because it is wembley! :)

it wasn't such a small venue, Muse venue was smaller and better, the people that brought coldplay here did everything wrong  but I know I shouldn't complain, I met them and saw them in 3 gigs, but still it's like the tour is overplayed now and they haven't even been here once during all this tour

ohhh and all the bands sign autographs outside the hotel here, it's not like they did something super especial... U2 did it, also bands not so big here as travis, keane, the killers and Muse

and the press here always complain about the costs of the tickets so it's not a big deal for us :P

anyway, my coldplay ticket was 2 times more expensive than the U2's one (and yes, I bought the cheapest ticket in both shows)

and the thing about that the latin american tour could be expensive I don't know if it's a big point, considering that it's not that hard to tour in europe but there are still many countries there that they haven't visited, the bad thing here is that it's not that easy to go to another country as there

Ok, I'm showing my age here, but I saw U2 as the SUPPORTING act for the J Geils Band in 1982, in Los Angeles. Have any of you even heard of J Geils? And U2 is still touring, almost 30 years later.

:laugh3: "Freeze-Frame!"

The October Tour though. that's impressive...

If it settles anything, Billboard Boxscore reports that the Hershey show drew 11,558. I know this thread has been dead for ages, but just thought some of the people involved in the earlier debate (which heavily centered around that show in particular), might be interested in the "official" number...

i guess chris really needed to use his rounding up skills 12,000 is horrible

Minus about 400 seats for the stage...

Anyways, I saw them at the end of July last year. I am 100% sure the show will be different. I know it;ll be a new experience for me. Outdoor Festival compared to Arena Rock show. Longer set, new songs.

The Oracle said, if you see them over and over again you wont see much change. But to a person who hasn't seen the show before its amazing. Or someone who hasn't seen the show in a year. Its the same with movies. After watching them so many times you get bored. Stop following them if you have a problem with it. Im happy with seeing the current set list.

The last time i saw Coldplay was in 2005 :D

I'm planing to see em in Barcelona, but first i need to get that damned Visa!! unfortunately i need it to get to europe.

Last year i kind of betrayed Coldplay :D i had to choose between them and Sigur Ros, i went for the latter.

I'm really glad that they did a second leg of the tour. I don't know if they hit Cincinnati before in 2008, but June 4th was my first Coldplay concert, and I wouldn't have traded it for the world. I know I would have been disappointed if I had missed them and had to wait for the next tour, even if they recorded a new album during that time.

Also, I don't know about the other venues, but Cincinnati was packed. It was wall to wall people. I've only been to Riverbend a few times, but it's never been that crowded.

To be fair, Hersheypark Stadium is a venue that is notorious for it's poor drawing power, even for big acts. Coldplay's draw actually topped a number of other "big" acts to play the venue recently (most notably Bruce Springsteen.)

Average attendence for shows on this leg (according to Billboard) is about 13,500 which is pretty much within Coldplay's usual range.
