I bet it's just a psychological thing. Most people think they look terrible in pictures but actually don't mind how they look in real life.

I would think thats what it is as well, alot of times people are just like, "ah a camera".

I'm the same. Its the posing that gets me. I can't smile sincerely on command, my face always ends up so fake and plasticy when I show my teeth, its much better when I don't know the picture is being taken.
