"Dear Journal,

After spending ninth periods of my freshman year in Global History and Geography Honors, I realize that I’ve learned so much, and, yet, still have a lot to learn about our society and world. 30

This past year dealt a lot with geographies; meaning location, movement, interaction, region, and place. The five themes of geography helped the class (as students) better understand the way a geography shaped a civilization, and vice versa. We coloured maps, indicating specific geographic features such as rivers and mountains, and labeled others, with different cities, countries, and civilizations. 58

When we weren’t learning about the geography of a civilization, we were discussing it’s culture. Endless notes were written about the key themes of each civilization; meaning forms of government, public works, religion, class systems, architecture, record-keeping, jobs, etc. To help enforce what we’d learned, the class would watch movies or do activities that related to the civilization. 58

One of the activities I remember best was when Ms. Ayers had us move all the desks to a certain area, and we were forced to sit like that for a good portion of the class. We’d been learning about Japan, and the activity helped us experience the close-living situation that the Japanese face every day. It was extremely uncomfortable, and, because of that activity, I don’t plan on visiting Japan any time soon. 69 (215)

Besides learning about the world’s history and cultures, we put all our knowledge to use by taking tests and writing essays. The essays were difficult at first, but, with practice, became easier."
