mc_squared
Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni demands FIFA to act after referee Martin Hansson allows Thierry Henry handball goal to stand By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 4:24 PM on 19th November 2009 Comments (9) Add to My Stories Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni wants FIFA to explain their choice of referee for last night's World Cup play-off against France in Paris. Martin Hansson did not penalise Thierry Henry for the blatant handball which set up William Gallas' extra-time equaliser, which ended the Republic's hopes of reaching next year's finals in South Africa. And it has emerged that the Football Association of Ireland have today written to the French football federation asking to replay the tie after lodging a formal complaint with the world governing body over the controversial play-off defeat. Blatant: Thierry Henry handles the ball before setting up France's equaliser, much to the consternation of Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni (below) Trapattoni told a press conference in Dublin today: 'All fans saw what happened on the pitch. 'I would only like to say I would like FIFA to explain how they selected the referee for this important game. For this important game we needed a stronger referee - an important referee.' HAVE YOUR SAY... Have you lost all respect for Thierry Henry? France star Thierry Henry blatantly cheated with his handball that helped his country reach the World Cup finals at the expense of Republic of Ireland. The forward earned a reputation as one of the greatest players to ever grace the Premier League with class on and off the pitch. But is that now overshadowed by his act of cheating? TELL US WHAT YOU THINK The Italian continued: 'I would give the advice to FIFA - maybe in the future change the rules about the play-off. 'Play two games and at the end of 90 minutes - no extra-time. 'I think there are mistakes in life... I've seen many situations in football but change the rules. 'All sports lose credibility with this situation - it affects the integrity of the game. I will go to FIFA and advise them 'go straight to penalties'. It's better for football.' Menawhile the FAI said the integrity of the game has been damaged after Henry's actions. 'The handball was recognised by the FIFA commissioner, the referee observer and the match officials, as well as by the player himself,' the FAI said. Ireland's Justice Minister Dermot Ahern and assistant Republic of Ireland coach Liam Brady have both called for the game to replayed. Anger: Liam Lawrence (left), Shay Given (third right) and defender Paul McShane appeal to Swedish referee Martin Hansson (centre) after France's goal Gillette stand by Henry Gillette have no plans to sack Thierry Henry following his role in ending the Republic of Ireland's World Cup dream. Henry has admitted to handling the ball before setting up William Gallas for the decisive goal in Paris last night but has denied any intent. He has nevertheless been the subject of much opprobrium over his part in the goal that ended hopes of Giovanni Trapattoni's side qualifying for the finals in South Africa. But a Gillette spokesman said: 'Gillette is aware of what happened last night in the World Cup play-off game. Thierry Henry has publicly acknowledged it was a handball. 'Gillette are not placed to comment on any refereeing decisions made in the match or any refereeing at all for that matter. 'This is not going to affect our relationship with Thierry Henry.' The FAI said there was precedent for the result to be struck out. FIFA ordered Uzbekistan to replay Bahrain in a play-off for the 2006 World Cup in Germany after the referee made a mistake after a penalty had been awarded. The governing body described it as a "technical error". However, in that instance, the referee was guilty of wrongly applying the rules rather than missing an offence. An indirect free-kick was awarded against Uzbekistan when one of their players encroached on the Bahrain penalty area as the Uzbeks successfully converted a penalty. The correct interpretation would have been to order the penalty to be retaken. 'The Football Association of Ireland is hoping that FIFA and its disciplinary committee will, on behalf of football fans worldwide, act in a similar fashion so that the standards of fair play and integrity can be protected,' the FAI said. Show of hands: France captain Henry and team-mate Nicolas Anelka celebrate But it is understood that FIFA will not entertain the idea of forcing the game to be replayed. A spokesman said: 'FIFA is not in a position to comment on decisions taken by match officials.' Trapattoni also admitted it had been a "bitter" experience and for him the circumstances of the play-offs were questionable. Decision of the Referee - Law 5 of the Laws of The Game state... The decisions of the referee regarding facts connected with play, including whether or not a goal is scored and the result of the match, are final. The referee may only change a decision on realising that it is incorrect or, at his discretion, on the advice of an assistant referee or the fourth official, provided that he has not restarted play or terminated the match. He added: 'For me it's bitter. There are many questions - they changed the rules about the seeded teams, then us playing away last. There are many doubts that have to be eliminated. 'Out of the non-seeded teams we were the only ones to play the second game away - why?' The Italian believes there was no prospect of the match being replayed, adding: 'I know its impossible to replay the game. This situation has to give a chance to who is responsible to rethink. It can be repeated in the future and we have to stop it. 'There is a 30-second stop and we clarify the situation. I'm sure in the future they will have to do something about it.' Trapattoni did though absolve Henry, saying: 'It wasn't up to Henry to say I touched it with my hand.' After the handball: Henry crosses to set up William Gallas' goal last night Elsewhere, the fall-out to France's controversial qualification has continued as bookmaker Paddy Power announced they are to refund all losing bets placed on Ireland to qualify for the World Cup. Meanwhile in France sports' teachers have claimed Les Bleus had cheated their way to the World Cup which has set a bad example to the nation's children. 'The France team will go to South Africa courtesy of unquestionable cheating which highlights the downward spiral affecting football today,' teachers' union Snep-FSU said in a statement. Tnspieler1012
I love how much Henry is getting attacked for his foul, blatant play, as if he kicked someone in the head. Its a handball for christ's sake, and the ref's responsibility to call it. I don't see how he cheated when its supposed to be penalized. He should admits it was a handball, and any other player would've followed up the exact same way.

Tnspieler1012
Fuck off, he deliberately played it with his hand, for fucks sake. yes, and should've been called on it. If you touch the ball you get penalized, and he was expecting to get penalized, but the ref fucked up. If it had been called, as it is 90% of the time no one would be outraged because the other team would've been fairly compensated for his foul. If someone is tackled from behind in the box, people aren't outraged, but exhilarated because their team gets a PK. The way I see it, Henry was trying to keep the ball in play, and the ref failed to compensate the other team for his obvious foul.
Texasluvsjonny
People are up set not only that it wasn't called, but he ran over and celebrated like the cheating **** he has always been when he knew full well that he did it. If you are going to cheat, at least don't run around like you won the fucking match fair and square. You can take the boy out of Arsenal, but you can't take Arsenal out of the boy. Tnspieler1012
I get that, and yeah, I'm pissed that Ireland got jipped, but people are acting as if no one on their team would 'just go with it' the way he did. Every player would've taken the goal, you'd have to be a saint to protest your own goal under those circumstances. Although its debatable which ones would've acted like ****s. *Perrine*
I agree with both of you... Was really stupid to celebrate the goal like this :\ The referee screwed up, and this is another exemple that they should use camera videos, like they do for rugby... Though, seems like everyone had one thing in mind today, being harsh to him, create tons of FB groups about this, it was even in the trending topics on twitter :dozey:

a-chan
what does he say?? I cant understand a word! YouTube- Thierry Henry Handball.Ireland v France 18/11/2009 and Interview With The Cheat He's saying that yes, there is a hand but since the referee (??) has sanctionned it, it's 'valid' (hence the rule in football). Seriously, this all story is making a HUGE FUSS in France!! Everyone is pissed at Henry and Domenech for 'celebrating' and not apologizing to the Irish team. The great majority of our nation (I include myself in this) is ashamed of this and a lot of people considers that we don't deserve to go to World Cup and that Ireland deserved to go. Our team is playing badly lately and frankly, being selectionned on a treachery is unacceptable. To all irish people here, you should know that the french people (not the players) are on YOUR side!! Plus, if it was the other way around, we wouldn't have let this go like that!! Irish team/supporters were very fair play on and off field...we didn't deserve it! The world french champion Bixente Lizarazu who was commenting the match is FURIOUS against the french team and Henry (who played with him during the 98 WC). He did a lot of ITV on radio/ITV asking to replay the match and even give the 'our' ticket to WC 2010 to Ireland because we played like asses and didn't deserve to win. He said (and I agree with that) we stole the WC to a great nation. In any case, this is another reason why I don't like football.... mc_squared
VIRALS SPECIAL: Thierry Henry's cheating hand suffers at the hands of Internet jokers By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 10:41 PM on 19th November 2009 Comments (48) Add to My Stories The world has reacted with revulsion at Thierry Henry's handball that helped France make the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa. But in the most part, the response to the 'Hand of Frog' incident - surely soon to be rechristened 'Henrygate' - has been humorous - except in Ireland where sales of a certain razor blade are set to plummet and the phrase Va-Va-Voom has been banned. Virals to commemorate Henry's hand have sprung up in their dozens and there's already a Facebook group 'We Irish hate Thierry Henry the Cheat' that could bring the Internet down with it's popularity. It's funny, topical and anti-French - so we love it - here are the best of the virals... Enlarge ...and here's the world's fastest-growing Facebook group: We hate Thierry Henry More...
