12 Months Of Coldplay 2009: SEPTEMBER (Four UK cities visited)

Where do we start? I think all fans felt we were coming to an end of an era. The Viva La Vida era can be seen as a success. The last show of the tour signalled the end of what can be described as a mammoth carnival. The Viva La Vida tour was finishing. So to the first real news of the month...

 

September 2nd 2009

Coldplay confirmed that Radio One would broadcast highlights of the concert in Glasgow. 50,000 Glaswgians got very excited and cracked opened the beer. Anyway more on that show later.

 

As Coldplay went on their tour, we knew they were coming home and boy did Coldplayers get excited!! do you think we guilt tripped Chris Martin to say they had neglected Britain? I didn’t feel neglected personally; I always felt I was on the tour bus and the after show parties thanks to are good friend Roadie 42. Review

Almost one year ago Coldplay played in Zürich at the stadium "Zürcher Hallenstadion" and made their fans enthusiastic. On Wednesday 2 September, 2009 the four British Coldplay members visited Switzerland again - this time they played at the stadium "Stade de Suisse" in the Swiss capital Bern. In spite of the expensive tickets, the stadium was sold-out – and who was ready to spend the money on the expensive tickets was rewarded - in spite of the pouring rain.

Already at the beginning of the concert Coldplay played some of their anthems - hits such as «Violet Hill», «Clocks» and «Yellow». Leadsinger Chris Martin's infectious and like-able way of acting spread fast to the audience. An electronical dub version of «God Put a Smile Upon Your Face» and Martin's solo performance at the piano playing «The Hardest Part» followed. A little past 9.30 pm the concert was interrupted due to the pouring rain – to compensate for this Martin played the next song in the middle of the audience. Coldplay on their side appeared to be impressed by their Swiss opening band Pegasus: After their gig they found five bottles of champagne in their dressing room – including a "thank you" note by Coldplay. As Coldplay fans what’s the one thing we have been looking forward to???? A live tour DVD! And on the 4th of September, are good friends in Catalonia (Barcelona for you people who failed Geography at school) thought they were going to be the lucky ones.

 

“Coldplay are apparently filming tonight's Barcelona concert for a live DVD, Spanish media newspapers are widely reporting this morning. 63,500 tickets for tonight's concert at Barcelona's Olimpic Stadium have been sold since April and the venue is now a total sell out.

 

According to the sources, the filming process will take place with a sophisticated camera system that includes a very high crane installed outside the stadium to capture aerial views of the show.

 

It is as yet unknown whether this news will be officially confirmed or if the DVD will also include footage from other stadium shows, including Paris and Wembley.”

'M BAAACK! awesome show, im fucking tired. sound problems, just little cuts in violet hill, that was all. crowd was IN-CRE-DI-BLE, everybody standing up from damn beggining to damn end (i was in the seating zone), they knew a lot of songs (only Glass of Water failed a little in crowd response) and singing along veeeeeery loud. the cellphone wave was really cool, and the amount of people there was just INSANE! the pit was crowded, i'd never seen something like that. oh well, good night. I no what some of you are thinking!! Not enough pictures! Here is some from the 7th December Gig in France, which has been hailed as their best gig to date.

 

 

 

Now this was apparently a belting show, lets have some reviews!!

The phone wave was just AMAZING ! It was a huge success ! So beautiful ! I have to explain something.... When I am euphoric, I yell "yououh".... During this concert, I always yelled yououh ! My mom was like " eh calm down ! It's a concert !" But VLV was the most intense moment according to me. I do not know, it was moving. All these people who were single ohohohohoh..... During The Hardest Part, Chris sat in front of his piano, played during 3 secondes and left his piano with a "merci" . It was so funny ! The phone waves were AMAZING. So beautiful. And Chris explained the whole thing in French. So cute. I love the way he pronouced "mobile".[thanks angedediamant]

I just got home from the concert. it was freaking amazing! i was there on time, so i had fine places. when we could go into the park, i just run the fast i could. guess what? first row place at the fences in de middle of the stage. i felt so great. when the boys came on stage everybody was freaking out. i saw chris really close and you could see he didn't felt good at all. he looked white, had a scarf around his neck en looked very tired. he needed 3 songs to get in it. then he was back! he was screaming, jumping, running, laughing, everything. so amazing. in the middle of postcards from far away he stoped, looked at johnny on the stage and said 'i really fucked up that part, i'm sorry for that! lets go 2 minutes back, yknow, lalala that was the hardest part!!! wow, wasn't that amazing?' and played pffa again. the boys had so much fun on stage, they were all dancing, running, throwing with everything. it was great to see. later on the c-stage we sang happy b-day for johnny! but he felt really embaressed, pretty cute. then he came with the rhyming part just before death will never conquer, but at the half he coudn't find the word so it was. nananana idont know! i didn't really prepared this part of it, so then you get words that sound like shit. (or something like that) it was really funny to hear and see. i really loved the show. i'm so 'high' at the moment, can't sleep. it REALLY was the best day of my life. guys, thank you SOOOOOOO much! edit: they played green eyes instead of trouble. Before I continue shall we look at the fantastic gigs in the UK lets look at this marvellous interview from support act Flaming lips

 

“How did you come to be on the Coldplay tour?

When Coldplay played in Oklahoma City, where we're from in America, last November, Chris called me about a week later and said, "Hey Wayne, do you guys want to do some of these shows with us, playing these giant stadiums in Europe next summer?" I just said, "Sure, sounds like fun!" Then I didn't really think about it again until we arrived in Barcelona! And that's what made it fun. I'm not really doing it from a marketing point of view, I'm doing it cos Chris loves us and we like them.

 

Did you go to the Oklahoma show in November?

Yeah. Luckily almost every time that they've played there I've been home. The previous time I went down there in my truck and Chris and Jonny jumped in the back and I gave them a tour around Oklahoma and some of the significant places that are important to Flaming Lips folklore, like the first place we played and where we filmed Christmas On Mars. It was a lot of fun.

 

What did you make of Chris's Flaming Lips cover at the November show?

Oh, he always gives us the greatest shout outs. For days afterwards I'll run into people at the malls or whatever in Oklahoma and they'll say, "Chris Martin talked about you at the Coldplay show!" I think he did Superman and, y'know, when you're sitting there and there's 15,000 people in Oklahoma City thinking, "Wow, according to Chris Martin, Wayne is the coolest guy in the world", that's pretty hard to beat!

 

When did you first meet Coldplay?

I have to say that we've been connected from the very beginning. We both played at a festival in Scotland around the time that Yellow went into the charts in the UK. I remember we were standing there with them when they came off stage and we all talked about each other's music and I think we've just had a connection with them ever since. For whatever reason, we've just stayed real casual and real friendly, admiring each other's ways of doing things. It's mostly just cos they're cool people. There's a lot of musicians out there in bands that are popular but you simply don't like being around them that much when they're doing their thing. I think now that they're so popular they can obviously pick and choose whatever they want. They stick to these hard-fought priorities and think, "We like these bands and this music" and they prove it by inviting you along, it's wonderful! And you can tell the kind of effect they have on their organisation because everybody they work with is really respectful and nice and tries as hard as they can. And that's simply because of the way they are. There's a lot of other groups out there that you travel with and their organisation isn't nearly as nice to be around.”

SO NOW! Coldplay are coming home!!!

 

When these dates were announced at the latter end of 2008 there was a sense of justice Coldplay were about to prove themselves On some of the biggest stages of all

 

MANCHESTER Gig – So to the land of Red and Blue. Coldplay were going back to where it all started. What did our very good friend Ian think of the gig?

 

First in the queue at 6.45am. Front row almost 10 hours later. No setlist changes really, Trouble in for Green Eyes, and a Manchester Rhyming Song introduced Will. I know Mich got one of Will's bell sticks, and I nearly got one when Chris bounced his right off Will's VLV drum and it came flying off the stage in my direction, missing me with a direct hit by no more than a couple of feet. Chris did an interactive question and answer set on stage talking to a video recording of Simon Cowell on X-Factor, who basically criticised the crowds rendition of the ending of Yellow. Chris gave us a second chance which was obviously going to be louder, and then he panned back to the recording of Simon Cowell who gave it a "bloody fantastic". [busybeeburns]

 

What about Roadie 42? What did he have to say?

“So here we are in Manchester. I live here (well, it's where the suitcase gets unpacked, anyway). It's famous for many things, not least some of the finest bands of all time. It's also well known in the UK for often being somewhat damp. Today though, there literally is not a cloud in the sky. The white covering they've used on the cricket pitch is also bouncing the sunlight back up into people's faces to such a degree that everyone is positively squinting as they work today - which makes a nice change from moaning about the rain...”

Now those LUCKY LUCKY PEOPLE IN GLASGOW!! Got a cracking show in Hampden but is that enough? NO ITS NOT!!!! They got the whole thing recorded for Radio 1, now take it from me I listened to the show! And it was sensational would have loved to have been there!!

WEMBLEY

 

 

 

So we come to the final gigs, Wembley stadium and take it from me...stunning. Coldplay can take great credit for their choice of support acts. In particular Jay-Z – he showed why he is the biggest rapper on the planet, he had the crowd to their feet, I saw old men making that famous diamond shape.

They were joined on stage by their good friend, god-father to Apple Simon Pegg!! I am still quite speechless - they totally rocked Wembley!!!! It was amazing!!!! The audience and whole atmosphaere was amazing! Sooooooooooooo happy to have the guys back home - in Chris words "...it's nice to have a home come back to!". I am sure I will have tears streaming down my face tomorrow! P. [thanks worldtrav]

 

The show on the 19th – well they were amazing, Chris was physically drained but he gave it everything, and one image which will stick in my mind forever as I looked at the big screen, Phil Harvey came onto stage and they got into a huddle which showed the togetherness of the group and bond that they have is matched by no other band on the planet – now that is a strong statement!!
