'Hope For Haiti Now' lineup confirmed

 

MTV has confirmed the lineup for the 'Hope For Haiti Now' earthquake benefit telethon. The event, which is hosted by George Clooney and Wyclef Jean, will be staged in New York City, Los Angeles and London.

 

Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Jean, Shakira and Sting will perform in New York. Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder and Taylor Swift will play in LA, as well as a group performance by Keith Urban, Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow.

 

Meanwhile, Coldplay's set and a group performance by Bono, The Edge, Jay-Z and Rihanna will take place in London. All musical performances will be available to purchase on iTunes from January 23, with proceeds donated to the Haiti earthquake relief funds.

 

The two-hour telethon will air on ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, BET, The CW, HBO, MTV, VH1 and CMT on January 22, 2010 at 8pm ET/PT and 7pm CT. In the UK, 'Help For Haiti Now' will air on MTV from 1am on January 23. It will also be broadcast on further digital channels and online.

A star-studded Haiti telethon is to add a UK leg after Rihanna, Jay-Z, Coldplay and Bono agreed to perform in the early hours of tomorrow morning to raise funds for the earthquake-stricken nation.

 

The chart-topping musicians announced they will perform live from London for the transatlantic TV special as the hastily arranged MTV event attracted ever-growing numbers of A-list stars.

 

Expected to be the most widely viewed telethon in history, Hope For Haiti Now will see Oscar-winning actor George Clooney host the Los Angeles event and the Haitian-born hip-hop star Wyclef Jean present the New York leg. The London anchor is yet to be announced.

 

Launching at 1am (GMT), the telethon will jump between the three cities, taking in performances from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder and Sting, while the CNN journalist Anderson Cooper reports live from the devastated Caribbean nation.

 

Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Shakira, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews, John Legend, and Sheryl Crow will also sing.

 

Their performances will then be uploaded to Apple’s iTunes store and sold for $0.99 (61p) to raise funds for the victims of last Tuesday’s earthquake.

 

Bono and Jay-Z are hoping to contribute further to the fundraising effort by marketing a duet about the impoverished nation’s plight. The pair are understood to have already written and produced the track and will give the song its debut, with the help of Rihanna and Bono’s U2 bandmate The Edge, during tomorrow morning’s telethon.

 

The music mogul Simon Cowell has also announced that he is working on a charity single. The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent judge is expected to use the voices of show winners Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle and his fellow X Factor judge Cheryl Cole on the track.

 

The multi-platinum-selling artist Wyclef Jean has already raised $2 million since the 7.0-magnitude quake struck the capital of Port-au-Prince, killing an estimated 200,000 and leaving as many as 500,000 homeless. The former Fugees rapper, who emigrated from Haiti to the US as a teenager, has been digging bodies from the rubble in his home country while making emotional appeals to the public to donate to his Yele Haiti Foundation.

 

Almost 40 TV networks have agreed to screen the telethon, while an array of influential websites, including YouTube and MySpace, will stream the event in its entirety.

 

Funds raised will be split evenly among a number of relief organisations, including The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, United Nations World Food Programme Oxfam America, Partners in Health, the Red Cross, UNICEF, and the Yele Haiti Foundation.

Hollywood A-listers will join forces with some of music's biggest names to raise funds for Haiti after the devastating earthquake hit the nation last Tuesday.

 

Brad Pitt, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Clint Eastwood, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jon Stewart, Julia Roberts, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, Nicole Kidman, Robert Pattinson, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hanks and Will Smith are among the many participants joining George Clooney (in Los Angeles), Wyclef Jean (in New York) and CNN's Anderson Cooper (reporting from Haiti) for the event.

 

"You got about 130 to 140 actors, athletes, singers and television hosts, and they're all coming up not to be on TV, but simply to answer the phones," Clooney told MTV News on Thursday. He added that the telethon's main goal is to "raise money, period. That's it. ... Just first and foremost that we can raise a lot of money. If I thought that we could all pick up shovels and go in there and not be in the way, I think a lot of people would do that."

 

The musical performances will include ones by pop legend Madonna (in New York) and Haitian artist Emeline Michel (in Los Angeles) as well as Wyclef Jean, Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Shakira and Sting in New York. In L.A., Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder and Taylor Swift will take the stage, plus there will be a group performance by Keith Urban, Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow. London will feature Beyoncé, Coldplay and a collaboration between Bono, The Edge, Jay-Z and Rihanna.

 

"It's gonna be historic," Jean said about his performance at the show. "I have my sister with me, Melky, my cousin with me, Jerry. I have [producer/musician] Papa Jube; he's in charge of those traditional horns that you see. It's definitely a family vibe you'll see tomorrow."

 

Beginning Friday, iTunes customers will be able to exclusively pre-order the "Hope for Haiti Now" full-performance album ($7.99) and the full two-hour video telecast ($1.99). Pre-orders will be delivered in the days following the telethon. Individual audio performances will also be available for purchase and download for 99 cents each in the days following the telethon. Apple, the record labels and the artists will donate their share of the proceeds to Haiti relief funds managed by "Hope for Haiti Now" charities, including the Red Cross and Wyclef's Yele Haiti foundation. Performances will also be available for purchase in the days following the event through Amazon's MP3 service and Rhapsody, through distribution provided by INgrooves.

 

Clooney thinks the opportunity to purchase the music afterward will help to extend the shelf life of the relief efforts beyond the one-night broadcast. "We're gonna have 18 songs, and you're gonna get to hear Jennifer Hudson sing a song you never heard her sing before," he said. "John Legend is singing 'Motherless Child'; it's just great. We're gonna have some amazing performances, and I think that's gonna make it last a little longer than just a telethon."

 

"Hope for Haiti Now" will begin accepting donations at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT on Friday. "Hope for Haiti Now" will benefit Oxfam America, Partners in Health, the Red Cross, UNICEF, United Nations World Food Programme, Yele Haiti Foundation and the newly formed Clinton Bush Haiti Foundation. Proceeds from the telethon will be split among each organization's individual funds for Haiti earthquake relief. With the exception of the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, each partner organization was selected for its history of operation and collaboration within the NGO community in Haiti.

Radiohead to play one-off gig this weekend (Jan 24) for Oxfam Haiti earthquake appeal

 

 

Radiohead have announced they will play a one-off gig for Oxfam's Haiti earthquake emergency response appeal this weekend.

 

The band will auction tickets for the Los Angeles show at The Music Box Theatre At The Fonda which takes place on Sunday (January 24) night. The auction is taking place now at Ticketmaster, and runs until 11am (PST) tomorrow (January 23).

 

Speaking about the one-off show, Radiohead declared: "We're in the middle of recording at the moment, so you'll be catching us on the fly, but if you're up for it, then we are too."

S'pose it's because they wanted more than one filming site where they would stream performances from?? And since Coldplay are British and MTV is also a big channel over here it just made more sense.
