Hey! This was just on a minute ago. Sung by some girl REEEEEALLY slowly on a piano. It was... interesting. Just okay - definitely not GOOD. But definitley not bad, either...just interesting. Will look for vid. Post if find it. :)

Wednesday night's (March 3) episode of "American Idol" was, without a doubt, the best episode of the season so far. That's not to say it was perfect (Haeley Vaughn's version of Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" saw to that), but there were a number of instantly memorable (and occasionally jaw-dropping) highlights. In addition to Crystal Bowersox's triumphant return from illness, there was Siobhan Magnus' rousing, left-field run through of Aretha Franklin's "Think," Lacey Brown's interesting take on Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me" and Lilly Scott's not-unreasonable take on the Sam Cook classic "A Change Is Gonna Come" (even though she still should have left it in the "retired" pile). Heck, even though Michelle Delamor's attack on Creed's "With Arms Wide Open" (which she re-imagined as a sort of shuffling R&B jam) was most certainly a failure, it was nice to see her take a risk and push the envelope.

The most memorable performance of Wednesday night's show undoubtedly came from Katelyn Epperly, who took Coldplay's "The Scientist" (from their massive 2002 album A Rush of Blood to the Head) and slowed it down to a crawl that focused on the song's deep-seeded pathos. By focusing on the lyrics (and thus on her voice), she revealed something about "The Scientist" that may not have been entirely evident before (namely that it's an incredibly devastating tune about being lost). She made the chorus cry, especially the line "Nobody said it was easy." The judges may have been lukewarm, but "The Scientist" absolutely ruled.

Of course, the original has one of the best music videos ever made working for it. In this clip (which won three MTV Video Music Awards), the entire narrative is told backwards. It's a stunning and technical accomplishment. While the song now belongs to Epperly, Chris Martin still has the video in his pocket.

Also, all judges said that it's an awesome song and that they love that song. Simon called it contemporary and very cool.. the song, not the performance, so kudos to our boys. :)

I shall quote what I just said about it in the random thoughts thread:

Arghhhhhhh, that girl just BUTCHERED The Scientist on American Idol :bigcry: I was actually writhing in pain on my couch watching it :wreck:

Whenever I happen to watch American Idol, it just serves to remind me of why I DON'T watch American Idol :P

:laugh3: Ryan just said Coldplay! I already knew someone was going to sing a Coldplay song because you guys mentioned it, but just hearing him say the band's name made me happy. :P

Yeah, she sounded like she was in pain singing it. It was way too slow. She murdered my favorite song.

Yeah, she did sing really slow. I just loved how all the judges said it was a good song.I loved how Simon said it was a cool song. :wacky: not the best performance though. :\ But at least she likes Coldplay...

really?

really?

Well not like super uber happy, but I like when Coldplay gets a mention on t.v. :P

One of the classic Coldplay tunes, the piano part is simple and genius.

I really liked it. Not like Coldplay, but really good.

She has a nice voice thats for sure. But not for this song. Only Chris can sing this.

Not much to say...she has a great singing voice, but she didn't make a great job with the piano.

In one word; Boring :\

From Yahoo!Music:

Katelyn Epperly

This week, Katelyn scaled it back, doing an intimate rendition of my personal favorite Coldplay song, "The Scientist," while playing a white piano. And she surprised me all over again. The girl has officially made me a fan. She changed up the melody a bit drastically and slowed it down a little too much for my tastes, but her vocals were lovely and filled with palpable emotion, and I actually wasn't aware that she could tickle the ivories until this evening. I underestimated this gal.

"I liked that you were playing guitar," Ellen accidentally said, proving once again she's no musical expert, though she quickly blamed her error on sleepiness induced by Katelyn's too-slow cover.

Kara was less sleepy, raving, "I kind of love you...you're seriously good." Simon declared it "a million times better than last week"--a big compliment, since last week actually was pretty good--and told her she'd put herself back in the game.

It was alright...she looked like she had to sneeze, was possibly lost in the lyrics or in pain during most of the performance. In my opinion, there are just certain groups whose songs shouldn't be replicated or performed by anyone other than the band itself (ie. The Beatles, Coldplay). But that's just me...it was just meh.

it's shit, the scientist just shouldn't be covered at all.

I now know why I do not watch American Idol! There are some songs that contestants shouldn't try and sing. I refuse to drink the American Idol Koolaid!:inquisitive:

I don't think anyone that's covered a Coldplay song on AI has ever won, so that should tell you something!

Fail!!
