Learner driver flips instructor's car... on her SECOND lesson

Most people are nervous when they learn to drive but one pupil may have been put off for life after flipping her instructor's car onto its roof - on just her second lesson.

Stunned neighbours took pictures of the upside down BSM learner's car after hearing a loud smash.

No one was hurt but the road had to be temporarily closed while the black Fiat 500 was loaded onto a breakdown truck.

Witness Russ Dunne, 33, who lives on the quiet street in Headington, Oxford, spoke to the instructor after helping to rescue him and the stricken pupil, who was in her early 20s.

He said: 'I was standing at my door talking to someone from the Labour party who had come around canvassing.

'I heard the engine revving really heavily and then this almighty smack.

'I stuck my head out of the door and saw the car on its roof. I was in shock because at first I thought it was joyriders.

'Talking to the instructor, he said she basically kept turning the steering wheel so it must have been almost on full lock.

'Then something happened and she must have planted her foot on the accelerator.'

Mr Dunne helped pull the driver out of the passenger side of the car, while the instructor freed himself.

He said: 'The girl kept saying she couldn't believe it and that it was only her second lesson.

'She was understandably quite shocked.

'The instructor was more like "c'est la vie, accidents happen".

Mr Dunne added: 'The passenger side window was smashed and so was the windscreen, and there were scuff marks on the side of the car.

'We just wanted to get them out of there as quickly as possible - it does pop into your head that something could be leaking.'

Fellow resident Dermot Dobson was alerted to the crash when the driving instructor knocked on his door to tell him the car had hit his gate.

The 58-year-old said: 'The driver came down York Road to turn right into Old Road. She must have been steering hard right and accidentally hit the accelerator and took off.

'No one was hurt but I think the instructor and his pupil were a bit shaken up.'

He added: 'We see a lot of learner drivers around here - there's a network of two or three roads they use - but I've never seen anything like this.

'It's a relatively unusual way to announce your arrival in front of someone's house.'

A police spokesman said officers closed the road briefly and an ambulance crew attended but did not treat anyone.

No arrests were made.
