August 6, 201015 yr I would indeed prefer Wyclef Jean as president of Haiti to Haiti's present president Réné Préval. When the earthquake struck on 12.1 killing more than 300,000 Haitians, Wyclef Jean participated in the rescue operation in person / on site in Haiti. And he has collected moeny for Haiti Relief Fund. He was appointed goodwill ambassador for Haiti in 2007 by the present president. He was born on Haiti, but grew up in New York, but has apparently NEVER forgotten that he has HAITIAN roots. He is involved in a movement aiming at actually BUILDING HAITI UP again, whereas the present government / leadership is only talking, incompetent and suspected of being involved in corruption. So any change in HAITI is for the better. So I hope that WYCLEF JEAN makes it. The present president and other leading figures disappeared from the public eye in HAITI after the earthquake.

Hip hop star Wyclef Jean has formally registered to stand for president of his native Haiti as it rebuilds after the devastating January earthquake. Dozens of supporters greeted him as he arrived with his wife and daughter at an electoral council office in the capital, Port-au-Prince. The deadline to file candidacy papers for the 28 November poll is Saturday. Mr Jean, who lives in the US, will now have to prove he is eligible to run under Haitian law. A review board will verify that his candidacy meets constitutional requirements, including having lived in Haiti for five consecutive years leading up to the election and never having held foreign citizenship. The singer, who grew up in the US, holds a Haitian passport and has US residency. He says his appointment as a roving ambassador for the country in 2007 exempts him from the residency requirement. The list of official candidates will be published on 17 August. 'VERY EMOTIONAL' Mr Jean filed papers to run as a candidate for the Viv Ansanm (Live Together) political party. A member of the electoral committee said that Wyclef Jean was not on the list of candidates approved to run for president because he does not live in HAITI. Newspaper on 19 August 2010. There is a rule saying that to run for president, you have to have lived in HAITI for the last 5 years. And Wyclef Jean lives in the USA. So he has not complied with the rule of residence in HAITI for the last 5 years. I read somewhere today that Wyclef Jean tries to appeal the electoral committee's decision. I think that WYCLEF JEAN has really done something to help HAITI with donations and his participation in relief work in the days following the earthquake, whereas the political leaders disappeared from the scene when the Haitians needed them most. Most of the political elite has a reputation of being corrupt. So I thought that Wyclef Jean might be able to change something for the better in HAITI - because he is has been living in the USA, and he has not been in (much) contact with the corrupt elite.

It makes a big difference whether or not you can speak the main languages of the people who live in your nation. Would be kind of paternalistic for some english speaking dude from the global north to come down and run a country.

I DISAGREE in this case, BRIGGINS: In this time of CATASTROPHE IN HAITI (even if the world media are busy with the floods in PAKISTAN and CHINA / North Korea + Kashmir) the main language of the people in HAITI is: AID and COMPASSION. Disappearing for days and weeks as the Haitians leaders incl. the President did when the population needed them / him, does not seem like effective leadership to me! I understand that not much progress has been made in HAITI. People are still living in the streets in tents etc. Everything seems rather unstructured. So anything other than the present corrupt leadership would be an improvement. But I agree that it would have been an advantage if Wyclef Jean had spoken the two main languages of the Haitian people. I think that when he was in HAITI to help in the days and weeks following the gigantic earthquake and seeing that the leaders of the Haitian people had simply disappeared for a very long time, ONLY THEN did he make up his mind to run for President because CHANGES were needed in HAITI.
