A NEW LP? What's the Plan?

Featured Replies

What we know, and have been speculating and making wishes about concerning LP5 is, naturally, the creative process involved and the music's production. How do these guys do it? What will it sound like? Wonderfully exciting stuff for a fan like me.

But what I'm interested in learning about at the moment is the nuts and bolts and the especially the timing required in rolling out an album once the artist, producer and guest artists are finished in the studio. Exactly how does the recording industry get from the studio stage to the touring stage. So here are some questions along these lines, for discussion and my enlightenment:

1. At what point does a visual concept (the logos, albumn art, website, video themes etc.) get decided?

2. When is the release date decided? When is it announed? How far in advance of the release date is the manufacture of LP's and CD's arranged and done?

3. When is it decided that a tour will happen, and what it will be like? How are cities and venues chosen? Why in that order? When are suppporting artists booked?

4. At what point does video production enter the planning?

5. How and when are interviews and guest spots on radio and TV in suppport of the album and tour planned?

6. In all these processes, the band is clearly involved, but beyond them, who does what? What is the role of the band's Manager, the record company?

In other industires, I know, Project Managers have complex charts that detail all the above and much more. There are unnumerable tasks involved, but I'm mostly interested in the timing and approximate order of them in the music industry. Also, if you know of any literature or other media that might educate me, please let me know.

I think theres already a thread for this.

I Wish I Knew All Those Answers :(

I'm Too Excited for LP5  All I Know is it's A Scheduled for a December Release and there may be a Song Called Wedding Bells etc .

I highly doubt it will be released in December; that was an overly-optimistic comment by Chris and everyone ran with it.

Realistically I think it has a better likelihood of being released be sometime in summer 2011. The previous 4 LPs were released between June and August, I'm going to wager that they continue with that pattern.

Noooooooooo :(

You Got My Hopes Up Christopher Martin

But I Forgives You

Great! Where?

I think theres already a thread for this.

Would you mind directing me to it?

we just havve to wait..

You would know. :P

Didn't you just post this in the LP5 thread?
He did, but he put this at the top of it: "This entry has been moved to the Coldplay section as a new thread."

Oh :|

I've seen some devilishly complicated Gantt charts for relatively minor construction projects, I dread to think how it would look organising Coldplay's next album era from start to finish!

Focus, folks

In this thread, I want to hear about the recording industry's processes and not about what you want or expect from LP5 and when, for which there is another thread. Not too many people have all the info I've asked about. I'm hoping to learn something I don't already know by drawing on the knowledge of those who do.

(Ian! You know what a Gantt chart is! As a former Project Manager, I worked with many of them. That's why the process interests me. And thanks for suggesting that I start this new thread here.)

Eeeeeeasy Simba

i hope they randomly throw in tribal sounds and animal noises from the lion king!

I agree, knowing the process would be interesting but I don't think this is the place to look for answers. Obviously, these questions are for people who work in the industry, not fans. Most of us would just be speculating. I think you'd have better luck researching websites dedicated to the recording industry. In fact, you've got my curiosity up and I may do just that. Go Google!

Thanks, Pink. I'm doing that too. Just thought that among all the fans here, there might be some people who had an overview of the industry and could educate us.

I can only answer a couple of questions from what I've heard and been informed until now (I'm really interested in this things)

I think the LP's art can be either decided after of before the actual making of it.

If it's before, it is a trigger, because the music and lyrics may be inspired by many aspects of the artwork. This happened, for example in Viva La Vida. The name and inspiration was taken from a Frida Kahlo's painting.

The French revolution theme was chosen after the making of the cd (or during it), and it was probably one of many options they had. They may be looking for somehting to exemplify the whole CD.

That's pretty much what happens most of times. Bands get inspired in some art, and ideas, and make the art their next lp cover, or they make the music with an idea and then put it all together with some nice design someone does specially for them (with or without a piece of work that was already done)

The date may be provided by the recording company or it's decided (generally by big bands like Coldplay) by the members and staff when do they have finished it.

I think team work is the basis of a good LP. But team work does not only include the band members but also many other people, as the managers and consultants. Everything else, as tour dates, interviews, etc, is decided way after releasing the record.

And regarding to the videos, I'm sure that when they are treating with some good song they FEEL that's gonna be huge, they know it.

Hope I wasn't confusing (English is not my first languaje) and that the info I could give was most accurate and of your like. :)

Yeah I've studied Project Management in some detail at diploma level (not through choice though!)

Take this with a grain of salt because I don't know what I'm talking about but I imagine the band gives the record company a rough idea when to expect an album, but it's not set in stone ("X&Y"). Once it's turned over to the record company, I think it would be their decision when it's released, factoring in all their other releases. And planning a tour the magnitude of Coldplay's...well, I think my head would explode.

Thanks Charlie! The entire process is so much more complex than I had realized - so many factors come in to play!

Glad to be of use! Well, at least I told you only a bit of it all...:D

what I mean is that a LP's recording is SO complex... I can't begin to explain it with my basic knowledge.

What I know from practise is that writing songs can be extremely hard and complicated by my own, so I can't imagine how is it to make an entire album full of related to each other, not self, with the enriching experience of working with others.

That's what I aknowledge to most bands as something amazing!
