^ True that. :)

Ooooh there's a great little quote from Noel Gallagher about The Coral...

"The Coral are so far ahead of their time and their peers it's a joke. The best band of their generation by a very long mile" - Noel Gallagher

I love him for that :D

:D

He's the reason I know The Coral ()

I think you may enjoy this vid Noemie ;)

I might not even bother hanging round to see the Courteeners :\

I'm not surprised. The Courteeners are basically a boy band with instruments.:dozey:

Yeah, altho your average boy band probably has slightly better lyrics. :P Liam Fray is far from being the Northern poet he thinks he is

The Courteeners are f-ing amazing! Their 2nd album, Falcon, is a masterpiece!!!

So.. I've heard a few of The Coral's big hits and I'm starting to like them and I wondered if anyone could advise me what album to try first?

Woah, didn't know this thread was still alive... thought it had long since disappeared

What have you listened to already Kat? Dreaming of You? In The Morning? Jacqueline? They're the big ones.

Butterfly House might be a good place to start; it's the most recent and probably their most solid/consistent album

Roots and Echoes is lovely too - very 60s sounding - try In The Rain, Cobwebs (one of my faves) and Rebecca You

The earlier stuff is a bit more eccentric - stuff like Shadow's Fall, Simon Diamond, Skeleton Key, Bill McCai, Goodbye etc are all brilliant but slightly bonkers. It depends what you'd prefer really - the more mature, laid-back, Byrds-inspired later stuff or the madcap, sea-shanty-inspired early stuff ;)

Actually, if you've got Spotify the best place to start is search for the Singles Collection and listen to that or search for it on youtube (or I can upload it for u if you'd rather) :D

I added your playlist on Spotify, and have downloaded their first album which is pretty good

I actually love Shadows Fall and Goodbye the most of the album

Can't go far wrong with The Coral, although Nightfreak & The Sons Of Becker wouldn't be my first choice for a newbie. There was a 2cd ltd edition of Butterfly House with 5 extra tracks, which is well worth getting if you've a choice between the two. They also released an acoustic version of The Butterfly House, although I haven't heard that yet.

Has anyone heard the soundtrack album Bill Ryder-Jones put out?

If? Yeah, it's bloody gorgeous - massively different to The Coral's music tho, it's mostly instrumental. If you've not heard it, you can stream it from the guardian's website http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2011/nov/07/bill-ryder-jones-if-stream?INTCMP=SRCH

And I agree, Nightfreak's not one of their most accessible albums :laugh3: /understatement

but it has some cracking little songs on there. Grey Harpoon is probably in my top three of fave songs of theirs :D
