Also, I was always under the (likely inaccurate) impression that Don't Panic (formerly Panic, I know) was an indirect Radiohead reference. Radiohead have a song called paranoid android, which is Marvin from h2g2. I think Coldplay just wanted a slice of that cake and got their own reference to the story. A long time ago there was a girl and Chris Martin asked what her favourite colour was and she said it was Yellow and then they talked about the Hitchhikers books. Yellow is the colour of the bulldozer of course. ;) I'd be surprised if hadn't read the book or watched the TV series by now but maybe he hasn't...
