 Sooo, as I sit here trying to sing my son to sleep, I am reminded just how oddly violent some lullabies can be.

So, I am asking all you talented and gifted musicians / lyricists to give a go at composing a few new lullabies - preferably on youtube ? Or new lyrics set to the music of a known lullabye ?

I think it could be a fun little project and I would love to see what you lot could come up with !:D

oddly violent lullabies?

you mean new compositions? if so, great idea. :idea2:

i've not been inspired to write lyrics lately, thougth i'd like to contribute with the project soon.

meanwhile i'd go with playing him just instrumentals, classic guitar or piano.

(thought the end is with electric guitar :uhoh: )

(that one is a bit too electronic/orchested at some moments)

with lyrics all i can think is steal that one, i'm sure it sounds wonderfully from a new mama. :nice: singer devoted that one to his son.

only other one i can think of with lyrics is spanish song. i never noticied that for that i go so much back to my background

or if you played him music before he was in your arms, you can try that.

my dad used to play me music, thought some gave me goosebumps (one of Alan Parsons Project albums, and a japanese kinda experimental pianist, he made sounds of storms  )

well i'm sure coldplaying musicians and lyricists here will contribute a lot better than i tried to. :) (as i mainly just bumped the thread)

:) Thank you, Darlene !

English /American lullabies ,childrens stories and cartoons can have a disturbing twist- most popular being the "Rock a Bye Baby" lyrics.

I was hoping those from other countries would share lullabies from their own areas, if only to compare to ours.

But yes, new compostions is just what Im really wanting to hear !

I know many here have the talent. Just a thought that comes in the middle of the night...

Hush-a-by baby

On the tree top,

When the wind blows

The cradle will rock.

When the bough breaks,

The cradle will fall,

Down tumbles baby,

Cradle and all.

Fukt up.

hum, it made me check spanish lulabies (nana)

most we have are religious, or animalistic stories

but as what reilly posted, we don't have, at least not that i know.

Darlene, could you find any of those you spoke about on youtube ?

I'd love to hear lullabies from other countries(translated if need be )

Gloaming- thanks, yes, I love the Lennon songs, was just hoping to stir some attempts in members here that I just know have the talent to compose, even if lyrics only.

Just my feable attempt at an interesting thread pertaining to what interests me today:)

Oh ok... I might give it a try if I can... I think it'd be cool

you might also like this song.

He wrote this song actually as a lullaby for his son.

Aaaaack !!! Gloaming, I love that song ! :bigcry:

Thank you- never heard it, but the lyrics are wonderful,

would love an acoustic cover of this....:inquisitive: anyone ?

I'm glad that you really like it! :D

It was actually one of the first songs by Eels that I heard, and one of my favorites (though I don't know too many by them)

I might give it a go and cover it... though there are a bunch of covers on youtube of it.

I used to like to sing this one when I was babysitting. It has this nice calming rise and fall to the cadence of it, and fantastic imagery, The normally cranky kid would always be completely transfixed by the tune. Loreena McKennit - Courtyard Lullaby

There are some beautiful Gaelic ones I know of, but I only know them phonetically and I couldn't spell Gaelic words if my life depended on it, so I'm not sure how to look them up.

I can understand the violence thing- many western English nursery rhymes were actually adult political satires that seeped into popular consciousness. Because they rhymed, later generations assumed they were meant for kids. Sort of like how the original versions of the stories that made their ways into Grimm's Fairy Tales were never meant for kids at all.

Pick a tune and I'll try something to it. But I think the best old lullabys always said something about the person who sung them first- the time they lived in, their hopes, their fears, the ideas that they wanted to pass on- so really the best one for you would be one you came up with.

Hmm... I ended up coming up with a tune more or less by accident, but I'm struggling with the words. It needs to be 4 lines per verse, alternating 6 and 7 syllables. It wound up with a bit of a celtic-y sound to it, but that's what happens when you get a Nova Scotian to write a folk-style song.

What I need is a theme. What do you want the song to be about? Stereotypical go-to-sleep stuff? A story? Something you want to say?

  • Author

 uhmmmmm.......:facepalm:i have not thought that far !:embarrassed:

I'm so desperate for him to sleep more I dont even know !!

Something sweet and simple and catchy, that can stand the

test of ages, pass along to next generations....timeless.

A story theme would be nice. Darlene spoke of animals, I just imagine cute bunny , lamb, or whatever songs, wish she could give an example ! (Liams nursery is done in a monkey theme if that helps:D)

(edit) and THANK YOU for giving this a go ! Cool ! )

I`ll see what I can do. I came up with it in a rocking chair, so that back-and-forth rhythm is built in.. that usually helps.

Based on what I remember of my toddler days, I never really cared what my mom sang about, I just loved hearing her voice singing. It always made me feel all safe and special.

aaack, i think the post partum blues have set in, Im crying over everything !:bigcry:

but yeah/ see, the idea of a songs rhythm set to the motion of a rocking chair is brilliant- which is why I asked for others ideas, lol.

I could never think of something so obvious.

Ah, I thought that was the definition of a lullaby as opposed to a more generic folk song- that rocking motion is built in.

Meanwhile, until I get another burst of inspiration, the lyrics might take a while.... :blank:

I applaud you for even trying ! So cool, and yes, lyrics are hard for me too, I have been trying. Something personal for Liam would be awesome, but I think an attempt at a modern day, generalized audience would be fun...who knows, you may have the Next Big Lullaby to get rich and famous for, lol. I always thought I would like to write childrens books, but I am just not good at these things!

Thank you for your time and effort ! Liam will appreciate it !:baby::clap:
