October 23, 201015 yr Passengers using the Greater Manchester Metrolink network will see their tram fares rise by twice the rate of inflation in the new year. Ticket prices are set to rise by an average of 6% next year, with some fares rising by 7.3%. Metrolink bosses said the extra cash would pay for improving and expanding the tram network. They said fares have been frozen for the past two years while "major improvements" were made for passengers. Councillor Ian Macdonald, Chair of Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA), said: "For passengers, there is no ideal time to increase fares but any change will always be the least it can be to meet the growing costs of running, improving and expanding the network. "Members of the authority have considered the proposals in detail and we believe that they represent value for money, while also ensuring that the network can continue to compete with other modes in offering popular, good quality services." The price hike means an annual season ticket for an adult, from Altrincham to Manchester, will go up from £875 to £930. October 23, 201015 yr Author its more expensive than the bus already. and yes its more convenient on the tram but its not just the increased tram fare, its finding somewhere to park the car to get the tram. the only places there is space is the pay & display car parks. and I'm quite sure Q-Park will increase the cost of the park & ride ticket. there's no way I'm going to get the bus to town with Sam, but I can cope with only going to town a couple of times a year when I don't have Sam with me. the rest of the time the Trafforc Centre & Altrincham can have my money
October 23, 201015 yr Is the metrolink a lot cheaper than the train? I only ever got the train to Altrincham and it's like £4 for a return if I remember correctly.
October 24, 201015 yr its about the same. What makes me chuckle is that they must lose so much money on skipped fares for every Man Utd home match. They just can't physically check 20000 tickets on the tram network in one afternoon! :o

October 25, 201015 yr When I was on the metro in Manchester I never paid, but I only used to to get from Piccadily Garderns to Picciadly station or Victoria.. I also encouraged Noni to skip it when she came to Manchester to see me ! :)

October 29, 201015 yr they do have ticket barriers at Old Trafford station on either sides, but only for people getting onto the trams on matchdays to prevent crushing or platform injuries; not at all like the Tube and certainly no automated barriers. There's nothing in place to stop the hundreds getting off and leaving the station from each tram. If they put ticket inspectors at the gates they'd be rushed off their feet and probably have queues backed up to the platform which in itself is dangerous. Those who did get their tickets checked would probably get off at Stretford or Trafford Bar next time instead and walk the extra 10 mins!
