Domodedovo blast: Explosion rocks Moscow's main airport

Moscow's Domodedovo airport - the busiest in the Russian capital - has been rocked by an explosion.

At least 10 people have been killed in the blast and that dozens more are reported to have been injured.

Reports suggest a suicide bomber was behind the blast.

Early local media reports suggested the blast may have hit the baggage reclaim area of the international arrivals hall.

A RIA Novosti news agency correspondent at the airport reported that a lot of smoke could be seen in the area, and there was a smell of burning.

Emergency services are on the scene and tending to the wounded.

The UK's Foreign Office said it was checking if any Britons were involved.

The airport is 40km (25 miles) south-east of the city centre, and is popular with foreign workers and tourists flying into the city, says the BBC's Steve Rosenberg in Moscow.

Moscow's Domodedovo airport, the busiest in Russia's capital, has been rocked by an explosion that has reportedly killed 31 people.

More than 100 people were injured in the blast, which reports suggest may have been the work of a suicide bomber.

Russia's chief investigator said the explosion was the work of terrorists, and President Dmitry Medvedev said the attackers would be tracked down.

In the aftermath of the blasts, Mr Medvedev ordered increased security across Russia's capital and at other airports, and called an emergency meeting with top officials.

There were thousands of people gathered in the baggage collection area, baggage hall and queue for immigration at the time of the blast.

.

Now it is 35 dead, 180 wounded. In the USA they are incresaing airport body scanning with TSA full body scanners that can look inside you clothes. Ther are talk radio programs about scanners causing cancer and protest agains them. This is the fear of this happening here. Also the Patriot Act is up to be renewed. This could have been a planned bombing to put fear into people to vote for more security and less freedom. I can't believe the timing for this very destructive act.

Um that's kinda pointless with the TSA fullbody stuff, afaik that's only when you go to enter the terminals, at least here baggage collection doesn't need any screening and stuff so anyone could waltz in with a bomb.

i also thought that aswell, it'll make Europe to do the same as USA.

that's true and not true.

the places i've been in Europe you don't need screening for the arrivals (as far as i know we are not doing the body screenings anyways), thought i'm not sure about my last arrival flight they had fancy gates thought not controlled and nobody had to cross them at the time of the arrival.

but what i know is that is forbidden to cross into the baggage collection point from outside the airports (which i think is what happened here), you can only pick them if you are coming from the arrived and landed plane, but for workers from the airport is not allowed to cross inside from outside.

i know that cause on my first arrival i went close to the door to wave at my dad and the women thought i was coming from outside and was almost about to ban me from the area or to check my body.

that said i saw kids entering and leaving the said door that separates the nobody land with the normal land as their own will and nobody said a thing.

so i don't know how that person could enter the area with bombs on the body, if apparently was coming from the plane

Ah ok, vexing then.

 vexing what?

it caused sack of officials of security at airport.

the chronology of info/opinions.

so, the man came from a plane or entered from outside?

how he could had crossed the scanners and those didn't notice his bombs?

You just answered your own question there.

Security is always faulty in some way, my sister got to America and back with a swiss army knife.
