Ok, so here's the story:

two years ago i gave lessons to a kid to help him pass some subjects.

The kid failed the exam yet the father wanted to pay me because anyways i did my work, but owe me the last month.

whatever the mount of money it was i don't care nor remember.

This xmas the man died, and just this morning came his aunt to pay me what he owe me (they own and runned a grocery together).

Knowning that he died i didn't want to accept any money since i don't find it moral as i know they need it.

She insisted and ended giving me 40€

so now i don't know what to do with that money... since morally i can't accept it so i feel i need to invest it soon and in something moral.

i just thought to use it to donate it to some charity.

or i could wait to see if they re-open their grocery shop and buy their products with that amount.. but i think they'll give it to other runners so the benefit won't go back to the family.

my dad told me to try and buy some lottery... but the lil ned flanders in me doesn't find that option moral.

any other ideas?

If you feel as though you can't accept it, charity might be a good way to get rid of it.

That's such a weird story though. :P

I think it's apparent they would be quite offended had you not accepted payment. Although the family is having a tough go, your services were appreciated and that made it a priority to compensate you. I know its easier to say than do, but don't be so hard on yourself. It obviously meant a lot to the family to pay you that money. Put it into savings. If you see someone else in need, it'll be there. But there really isn't anything wring with spending it on something you or your family need.

Yeah play the lotto, because then you could win MILLIONS of euro's you don't want.

I would give it to charity and I'd buy, from my own money, some nice flowers and put it on the man's grave. He must have said to his aunt that she has to give you the money, and now if she didnt, she'd feel bad.

This is very well put, and I wholeheartedly agree with it. Yes, you may feel a moral obligation to not accept it, but they felt a moral obligation to give you what was owed to you. I think, out of respect, you should take it and do whatever you want with it.

They gave you the money as a paymeny so I mean, it is your money. I dont see how it would be such a bad thing if you kept the money for yourself. If you want to pay your respects to the family then you can always buy some nice flowers (like someone else said) and like include a card or something.

I'm going to agree with bright on this one. You did work for the money so you shouldn't feel guilty about it . :)
