coldplay_is_louve.
Victory in the Southern Ocean Day for the Whales It’s official – the Japanese whaling fleet has called it quits in the Southern Ocean, at least for this season. And if they return next season, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will be ready to resume their efforts to obstruct and disable illegal Japanese whaling operations. “The Nisshin Maru made a significant course change immediately after the Japanese government made it official that the whaling fleet has been recalled,” said Captain Alex Cornelissen from the Bob Barker. “She looks like she’s going home!” The Sea Shepherd ship Bob Barker has been tailing the Japanese Nisshin Maru factory ship since February 9th making it impossible for the whalers to continue their illegal whaling operations. http://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/news-110217-1.html I happen to be a Sea Shepherd volunteer. :nice: And my best friend since I was five years old, Mal Holland, happens to be with the Sea Shepherds, escorting the Nisshin Maru home at this very moment.
mc_squared
Excellent news!:D How do you feel about indigenous peoples in the Arctic Circle catching a set quota of whales using traditional methods, by the way? Any difference?
coldplay_is_louve.
No difference in my book. Whales are endangered and it's illegal to kill them. Should be stopped completely. :nice:
mc_squared
No difference in my book. Whales are endangered and it's illegal to kill them. Should be stopped completely. :nice: It's the commercial whaling that made them endangered in the first place, of course. I don't know why anyone would want to kill such an impressive, intelligent animal, but vegetarians argue that no animals whatsoever should be killed to provide food. I do feel that whales are a special case, though.;)
coldplay_is_louve.
It's an awful thing, to kill a whale. My friend Mal saw one killed in front of him and he still has nightmares about it. Took the poor thing over 25 minutes to die. I believe that there is absolutely no reason to kill a whale. Especially since they are E.N.D.A.N.G.E.R.E.D. They are a treasure to this planet and to lose them because of human stupidity would be truly a tragedy. Today's a great day for the whales, over 900 saved in this year's Sea Shepherd Campaign.

Well in the case of whales, it shouldn't really matter whether they're endangered or not. I love watching nature programmes about them (and orcas, for that matter).
coldplay_is_louve.
Very, very true. Such majestic creatures. I'm so happy that we're winning the fight for them down there.
