Darkest Songs??

Featured Replies

What are the darkest songs you've listened to? I started this thread because I was listening to 'I've Been Losing You' by a-ha and was fascinated by the lyrics only to find after further investigation that it was about someone singing/talking to a corpse after a post domestic violence scene. That said - it's some hell of a song!

What songs have you listened to which you find dark?

Dark songs...hum...

I don't know if they're that dark enough but...

Teardrop - Massive Attack

Everybody Hurts - REM

Muscle Museum - Muse

:P

dark for the lyrics or for the melodies? :thinking:

either or both.

ahh you mean songs with a creepy real story behind?

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GqnDROi6l4]YouTube - Placebo and David Bowie - Without You I'm Nothing [HQ][/ame]

it was inspired by the news about a serial killer that after the crime used to write stuff on the crime scene wall and even on the corpse, and there used to write 'without you i'm nothing' -so i've read :uhoh:

then next i can think of is Rammstein's Mein Tell, which was about the german cannibal :wreck: (creepy lyrics aside i have to say i like the music of that song).

The Killers made a Murder Trilogy:

Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf

Jenny Was a Friend of Mine

Midnight Show

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vblNj75hUpM]YouTube - Coldplay - AMSTERDAM[/ame]

Always felt it was largely a dark song...until that final lyric 'You came along and you cut me loose' which changes everything. Love love love it.

Manics' Intense Humming of Evil

Beat me to it!

And also 4st 7lbs.

The Devil Is In The Details by Boards Of Canada

either or both.

so i guess as dark = sad/pessimistic, like after break-up?.... or you mean hard to understand lyrics?

The whole holy bible is extremely bleak. (before religious people outrage I'm referring to the Manic street preachers album)

Music is interpretative. What ever you feel is dark!

seems i like 'dark'.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQBu1x-IWB0]YouTube - Deluxe - Es verdad[/ame]

in spanish, quite sad lyrics, yet one of my faves. i like how the melody builds up.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNiQXZBtLtQ]YouTube - Silence 4 - Cruel[/ame]

there's another one by the same band (silence 4) called Ceilings and lyrics seem to be about some drug reaction or something, say he is floating up and the cat runs away. can't find it on youtube.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yifiyVyda4c]YouTube - David Fonseca - Haunted Home (Live at CC Estúdio 2)[/ame]

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY1xpQ9NDl8]YouTube - acoustic Ryan Adams "In My Time of Need" 12.30.08[/ame]

pretty sad lyrics (anyone notice the Rivers Coumo resemblance here? :lol: )

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLWEFv_gMxE]YouTube - Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Stop[/ame]

apparently is written when he went sober, so seems like a talk with his couselor there or something.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY30VY1dmMI]YouTube - Placebo- Broken Promise[/ame]

(i will wait my time to tear inside you)

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTL45SZKiKU]YouTube - Kings of Medicine - Placebo (ALBUM)[/ame]

(in a bag you will be before the night is over)

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip46wgHtIS0[/ame]

if i understood the story is someone asking one to go on if he is gone, but also to ask for some sort of revenge :thinking: (is in french, i tried my best but probably i got it totally wrong)

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJ3vS2ggj54[/ame]

well no need to say which Justine is it based on :uhoh: is about some too naive girl that ends really bad.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkpNCemIkLw[/ame]

seems like the goodbye from a soldier going to the World War, hoping to be back home. -again if i got it right-.

Le Lac, Le dernier jour .... well most of Indochine's La Republique des Meteors is based on the time of World War I and II so...

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-bLZrJJ8zM]YouTube - Benjamin Biolay-"Ton héritage" 2009[/ame]

seems a lullaby, is telling like to a kid, if you do this or that -mainly bad things- is cause of your parents and it'll get worst as the kid grows up.

so here are more.^

Climbing Up the Walls-Radiohead

most songs off of The Wall and The Final Cut by Pink Floyd

The Drugs Don't Work by The Verve always makes me have a sad >< so much so that I cannot listen to it without tearing up

Yeah The Drugs Don't Work is very sad to listen to.

How could I forget Love Is Blindness by U2 though??! Not just the lyrics that are dark but Edge's haunting groaning guitar. So dark.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-YaW6p6ilc&feature=fvsr]YouTube - u2 - Love Is Blindness - Achtung Baby[/ame]

Also Tomorrow from U2's album October is so dark considering it's about Bono's experience when grieving as a 14 year old boy following his mothers death. I love the Celtic feel of the song.

Susanne Sundfør - The Brothel

Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead is the darkest song ever written.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrTB-iiecqk]YouTube - Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)[/ame]

"'Street Spirit' is our purest song, but I didn't write it. It wrote itself. We were just its messengers; its biological catalysts. Its core is a complete mystery to me, and, you know, I wouldn't ever try to write something that hopeless. All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve. 'Street Spirit' has no resolve. It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song. It's called detachment. Especially me; I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn't play it. I'd crack. I'd break down on stage. That's why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning. I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together. That's what's meant by 'all these things you'll one day swallow whole'. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn't have it in me to articulate the emotion. I'd crack...

Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don't realise what they're listening to. They don't realise that 'Street Spirit' is about staring the f***ing devil right in the eyes, and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he'll get the last laugh. And it's real, and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that too long, I'd crack.

I can't believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song. That's why I'm convinced that they don't know what it's about. It's why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell every time I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of its meaning, like when you're going to have your dog put down and it's wagging its tail on the way there. That's what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn't picked us as its catalysts, and so I don't claim it. It asks too much. I didn't write that song." ~ Thom Yorke

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CGIii_eTOk]YouTube - The Smiths - Asleep[/ame]

Undoubtedly the darkest songs on my ipod are from The Smiths. This is probably the darkest which is about suicide. The lyrics are incredible particularly

Deep in the cell of my heart

I really want to go

There is another world

There is a better world

Well, there must be

Well, there must be

Bye bye

Closes their compilation album Louder Than Bombs. Probably the most depressing end to an album ever!
