EMI stars launch charity for Japan Red Cross

Featured Replies

LONDON (Reuters) - Some of the leading pop stars from the EMI label have donated personal possessions to raise funds for the Japanese Red Cross in its efforts to aid victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami.

The charity auction, managed by online auctioneer eBay (ebay.com/EMIfamily4Japan), features items from artists including Coldplay, Katy Perry, Gorillaz, Iron Maiden, Jane Birkin, the Beach Boys, David Guetta and Lady Antebellum.

Funds raised will go toward the Japanese Red Cross disaster relief efforts, and EMI, one of four major record labels, said it would match all funds from the sale up to a maximum of one million euros ($1.4 million).

The initiative is the latest fundraising effort by the pop world, following the release of an album of hits, "Songs for Japan," featuring acts from all four major labels, and a charity gig in London at the weekend starring Beady Eye and Paul Weller.

The first phase of the auction opens on Tuesday and runs until April 15th and a second phase lasts from April 11-21.

Items included in the first phase of the auction include Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin's jacket from the 2010 Viva La Vida tour, Jane Birkin's own Birkin handbag designed by Hermes and a pair of vintage speakers from Abbey Road's Studio 3.

The second phase includes a 1987 Ferrari 412 which featured in Daft Punk's film "Electroma" and Perry's cupcake trampoline from her California Dreams tour.

I know that each of them had lots of jackets, but... I thought they already auctioned off Chris' Obama-sleeve jacket? For Haiti relief, I think? It doesn't match the group photo either, although I suppose that doesn't really matter.

edit: Okay nevermind, I suppose he must have had more than one Obama jacket too, this one's a little different. http://www.coldplaying.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=6975

Urgh, the previous jacket went for £ 9600. That's crazy.

But in the case, the more expensive it goes, the better

It's fantastic that they're doing this.

Any guesses as to what it'll sell for? I may go for it.

similar one got sold for £9600, and it got less media attention I think.

I nearly got that one, but someone clearly wanted it more than me. I stopped a bit short of the final price, thankfully. Not sure I want to pay 15k for the jacket, but we'll see what happens. If not, I'll look into getting the Abbey road tour and inviting some Coldplayers!

^ Well, if you came close to getting the last one, then you should try to go for this one. And there's an extra bonus, the signed gold disc(s) package.

Good luck!

While Will and Guy's jackets were pretty obvious - there was a confusion with "End of a Decade Sale" Chris one (whether it was actually Jonny or Chris) It might also be possible that same jacket was worn by both in different concerts.

If you're really interested in the jacket and don't want the gold disc, I'm sure someone (like me) would be willing to pay you a good amount of money for it. That way maybe you can bid even more

Sorry!

Wow! That's amazing!

Although it went for less than the one for Haiti relief last year, and this one included the gold disc thing, so in comparison this was quite a 'steal'.

Pretty happy to announce that this jacket stays with the Coldplaying family too :)

HUGE thanks to Katie - for pointing out that one of the many concerts this particular jacket was worn is the amazing Fix You CROWD RUN during Sound Relief! One of my favorite VIVA moments :)
