congrats!

This being the Japan Relief auction - we should have guessed it..it was worn in VIVA Tokyo Concert!

Another video to see this particular jacket in "action".

Chris Martin Worn Viva jacket fetches £8,600 for the Japan Tsunami Relief Appeal !

This was on the main page news. What a beautiful jacket!

A Viva jacket as worn by Chris Martin on the Viva La Vida world tour has fetched £8,600 on eBay for the British Red Cross's Japan Tsunami Relief Appeal. The jacket came with a triple gold disc presentation which has been donated by Will Chamption and signed by the band. The signed and framed poster from Coldplay's Viva La Vida tour dates in Brisbane, Australia fetched £390 for the same appeal.

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. They are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. The Coldplay proceeds will go to help those in crisis both in the UK and overseas - in this case the Japan Tsunami Relief Appeal. You can still donate towards the cause at the Red Cross website.

If the winner of this jacket is a member of Coldplaying, please be aware that in the future I will be willing to pay 50.000 USD for that jacket. Seriously

How far away is "in the future"? He is a member here, you should make him that offer now (although I'm not sure he'd take you up on it).

Roadie42,

First & foremost, welcome to Coldplaying. Noticing both your posts and your join date, I thought I'd give you a proper "hello" -- especially since you're a Texan.

Now onto your query...

I'm not only going to second Carrie's statement of "I'm not sure he'd take you up on it" but I'm going to go a step further and say you're more likely to ice skate in hell than buy the jacket from this member!

Then again I do not officially speak for this person, so it wouldn't hurt if you wanted to PM this person.

Best of luck~

Congrats, Oz. Still laughing about the bid... one second snipe. Yikes!

Mr. Roadie 42, knowing the winner very well, I have to concur with the sentiments of my friends above - he is stubborn and determined, and tremendous fan of all things Coldplay, especially iconic artifacts such as the jacket.

In any event, a big "hello" from another fan here... :)

Oz was the winner ("lo&loud" here on Coldplaying). You can read about some of our "Hidden Gig" (mis)adventures on my blog (LINK) along with Carrie (posted as "NumbersGirl" just above). :D

Hi Jason

Thank a lot for the link! Cool blog! You are a lucky man! Do you know by any chance the person that won the Gibson Blues King guitar used for Violet Hill? And how does it feel to play the "Viva" guitar?

Hi Jason

Thank a lot for the link! Cool blog! You are a lucky man! Do you know by any chance the person that won the Gibson Blues King guitar used for Violet Hill? And how does it feel to play the "Viva" guitar?

Thank you! I do feel lucky! I have never played the VIVA guitar though - I plan to just preserve it in the same condition that it came to me in.

I don't think that the Gibson seen in Violet Hill was sold off in the End of the Decade Sale, at least based on the photos.

There were four Gibsons attributed to Chris, sold on the last day of the sale, and each are painted in a different style from the one seen in that video (and an assortment of earlier publicity material, like Q magazine #264). So I'm guessing it is still with Coldplay or at some point it was repainted?

Of those four Gibsons sold, two of them went to the underbidder on the Johnny "Blacky" guitar that I had won:

  • Lot 40 – Gibson used by Chris Martin in Viva La Vida tour - hand painted by Chris Martin himself

  • Lot 43 – The most used and recognized style hand painted Chris Martin Gibson used in the Viva La Vida Tour

I don't know who won, I had just looked at the bidding history at the time and saw that the same person who was the underbidder on mine won those two auctions as well as Lot 33 – the white teardrop-style guitar that Chris used in playing "Yellow" during the X&Y tour (then handpainted for Viva). Whoever it was, they were a brand new eBay user and bid on those four pieces only (mine was the only thing that they bid on that they didn't win). I thought maybe it was the Hard Rock Cafe or something, but who knows?

When you say lucky, you really have no idea... I won the auction for my guitar by a margin of only 14 pounds...

Jason

Ahh - don't remind me that day!

I clearly remember - it was 31st December 2009 - just a few hours before New Years. I was infront of the computer waiting for the VIVA lots..I logged on to my account to bid on the painted guitars - BOOM - my internet went off during LOT 35 which was the VOX guitar.. I missed out on every single VIVA lot after that..I was planning to bid on the Chris's guitars - but no luck :(

My internet finally came back few minutes before the final lot - LOT 52 - which was the Strawberry Swing outfit.

I was so upset that I cancelled all my plans for that night..New Years Eve.

Still kicking myself..still hurts.

I know this was published a while ago but I just saw the news on Q...

It's a lot of money!

EMI charity auction update

You may remember our news story a couple of weeks ago about the charity auction that EMI were holding to raise funds in aid of the relief effort for Japan.

Well, the label have just announced that, as a result of selling all those things donated by their artists, a cheque for almost $1 million will be making its way to the Japanese Red Cross. $470,000 was raised by the auction - which incuded one of Chris Martin's old jackets (which he wore onstage and which attracted a winning bid of $14,060) and a 1987 Ferrari owned by Daft Punk that went for $42,000 - and then matched by EMI, making a grand total of $970,000.

Who says the music industry's full of self-serving egomaniacs?! Q salutes all those who took part in such a worthy cause.

Hope for Japan - Fix You

We live in Japan and for all the support my sincere thanks.

My twelve year old son made this video to try to make a difference. He was at school in central Tokyo when the earthquake hit and for too long I didn't know where (or how) he was. The Japanese characters are a strong message of hope for the country. If you like it, please forward. Things are improving but its going to take a long long time.

The direct link won't work yet as I'm new to the community so please go to youtube and type "Kai Fix You". You'll see it as "Hope for Japan - Tsunami & Earthquake - Kai - Fix You".

thank you to all for the inspiration

Here you are, I think this is what you want.
