Best Written Songs

Featured Replies

I wanted to get your peoples opinion about what you think some of the Best Written songs are based on composition and arrangement. I'm not talking what song is your favorite at the moment or even songs that you may even like, but songs that you consider to be the best of the best, or baffle your mind as to how someone could have written and/or arranged it.

I've been thinking about this for a while and the one song that I think is one of the best written songs of all time is

It's funny you posted A Day in The Life. After reading the title, that was the first song that came to mind. I'd throw Stairway to Heaven, Baba O'Riley, and Paranoid Android on that list.

I've never been a fan of 'A Day In The Life' in that sense (though I do like it in a general sense, I just don't see it as a song writing feat), I see it as simply a few ideas thrown up and that's what stuck. Beatles would be up there though with things like 'In My Life' and 'Tomorrow Never Knows'.

'Hope There's Someone' by Antony & The Johnsons and 'The Man Who Sold The World' and 'Quicksand' by David Bowie stand out too.

I'd add those songs to the list as well.

You really don't think it would be there in that sense?

No wonder you don't like the Abbey Road Medley in that it's similar in that it's a bunch of ideas that solidified together.

Some other songs I'd consider would be: Strawberry Fields Forever, Good Vibrations, maybe a song like Let Down or How To Disappear Completely, Echoes-Pink Floyd

Medleys are the worst thing known to music. I'm sure they spawn from performers having seizures due to too many flash cameras at live events knocking them out of sync.

I'd have to disagree, though of course I'm sure there are some songs that bits don't work well together. But in terms of A Day in the Life or the Abbey Road Medley I think it works perfectly

It'd be better to see them write each section as a whole song. It just kind of seems gimmicky. First time it was done fair enough, but it's dated now. The likes of Paranoid Android are much better since they fit and I wouldn't class it as three separate songs or anything, even though it started out that way. The only medley style song I like is Street Hassle by Lou Reed. I see it as more of a few different movements though, rather than a song.

I don't think A Day In The Life fits together all that well.

I might change my mind later, but these songs are the first I thought of

Kate Bush - Cloudbusting

Bruce Springsteen - I'm On Fire

U2 - Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses

The Rolling Stones - She's Like A Rainbow

Why? I just love the way all of the parts come together. Particularly the way in which the lead and rhythm guitars sort of dance around each other and the bass has a life of its own but provides the driving force behind the song. The drumming is understated but very effective. Then the song really comes to life just before the 4 minute mark then a minute it comes back down to earth and you have one of the best endings to an album i have ever heard. On top of that the lyrics are just spot on. i think the boys were hardly 18 or 19 when they wrote this.

oh yeah and every single freken song James Murphy has ever written!

Pink Floyd's 'Money' comes to mind. One of the more interesting time sigs, for starters.

I would also mention many of the songs written by Brian Wilson during the Pet Sounds era. Songs like Good Vibrations and God Only Knows are incredible arrangements, especially when you consider it's coming from a pop artist. I've always been a huge fan of Brian, and I think he was well ahead of his time when I listen to other music from that time period.

I am thinking Fireworks - Animal Collective

didn't really appreciate it until i started playing it myself. changes time signatures a few times and it's extremely difficult to sing...

yeah. that's what came into my mind

That's a decent shout.

I don't really know what I'm talking about to be honest, but I always thought that Cartoons and Macramé Wounds by Mew was musically and lyrically well-written. Of course I could be wrong about the musical aspect :P

This for so many reasons. if you are reading this post and have never listened to Pink Floyd i implore you to listen to this. each and every part of the song is so perfectly crafted. on the album it may run for close to 25 minutes but at no point does it become repetitive or predictable let alone boring. it goes through so many phases but never becomes incoherent or disjointed. truly something special.
