What it means to be....

do most americans like the way The Simpsons protray the american life? i think it is a brilliant piece of social commentary.

it's social satire, an exaggeration of certain negative things going on in society, but often more true than some would admit. It's a chiefly American show, so I think its success indicates that most Americans are not so offended to the point that they stop watching. Personally I think its a great show, and would gladly trade it for everything by Seth Mcfarlane.

Is Family Guy actually considered in the same light as The Simpsons over there? I only know a few people who don't love Family Guy here, and the few absolutely hate it, as do I.

I'd say Family Guy is definitely more popular, either due to primetime slots, advertising, or just all around baser taste. I admit I watch it as well and get most of the now infamous references. I can't help but find it funny. I do find that most Simpson's fans hate it though, as its a much less intelligent show. In fact, I think it's much worse when family tries to be political or to offer social commentary, as it usually just falls flat on its face.

i for one absolutely hate Family Guy. but won't go into it as that will just derail the discussion. but it relates to my undying love for South Park.

Cartman's rant on Family Guy? Yeah? Yeah.

This is exactly what I think of the Simpsons.

I've noticed that a lot of Americans tend to think they're superior and ignore problems with our country.

Also, I've noticed a lot of laziness, and in students a lot of snobiness.

There are more forces afoot in any nation than what one sees visibly or otherwise. Often the things one does not see on TV tell a story with a much richer tapestry, unmasked from the veneer of superficial media productions, and may present a truer tale of the real swath of humanity and ideas present in that country, at that time. Oversimplifications and stereotypes while amusing, define a narrow set of personae and can lead to false assumptions about how people think or how deep their nature truly is.

Interesting thread. I know that during the floods I got extremely sick of the media portraying us as hardworking, tough, and always willing to lend a hand to our neighbours etc. This is all well and good but really, isn't that just human nature? If you see someone in trouble, chances are you will want to help them. That's not specific to any race or nationality. No matter where you come from there are going to be hard-working people, charitable people, open-minded people, closed-minded people and some just plain idiotic people. That's just the way society runs, no matter where in the world it is.

I also tend to feel more patriotism towards the city I live in (not even going to mention the little town I grew up in, haha), but most of that is just for the purposes of a little bit of fun (i.e. State of Origin - an annual football competition between two states).

In saying that, I think that it is a good thing to feel a little bit of pride for your country, even if it's just to provide some sort of motivation to make it a better place for other people to live.

Hopefully that made a little bit of sense, it's late here :P
