While the world is talking about Kony 2012

I'd like to bring some attention to Project: AK-47, an organization that "rescues child soldiers and children in armed conflict in Southeast Asia and Latin America and provides them with long-term care and rehabilitation through adulthood".

Since there seems to be some controversy (read the second comment) surrounding Invisible Children, and they have a large following to begin with, it's only fair to shed light on some other really shitty issues involving children in other parts of the world--but please do not be deterred from donating to Invisible Children unless you have reached a negative conclusion after researching it for yourself.

Yeah I like how you pointed out how we should still acknowledge the severity of one issue (OR THE RIVAL), but nevertheless, still pretty tasteless to present your agenda in this way.

Dude, I knew someone would say "tasteless", but it honestly wasn't meant that way.

I wouldn't call them "rivals". It's just kind of a fact that there is an entire population of kids who aren't being really being looked at because their country's governments are saying they don't exist. Most people have come to terms with the fact that a lot of African governments are corrupt, and a lot of people know that there are child soldiers in Uganda and other African countries. I don't see the problem in presenting another more downplayed or relatively unknown but similar issue on the wave of another one. My main point was "you all know about this, but what about this?" but I guess it did sound bad because I did point out some negative things about Invisible Children, but that didn't come from a negative place, either--I just happened to be thinking about it and researching it and it sort of presented itself in the post.

I didn't mean to knock IC as much as I did; I just wanted to point out that there are some issues there that might lead people to find other charities supporting Ugandan child soldiers or child soldiers in general.

And in case you haven't figured it out, tact isn't really my forte.

Then maybe you should just promote it without mentioning another charity. No wonder you expected someone to mention the word tasteless.

Okay, I'll admit it--this thread is about the shittiness of Invisible Children and encouraging people to go to other charities for the Ugandan conflict and also acknowledge child soldiers in other parts of the world.

well, it was what the thread was about in the first place; my sleepy, wanting to be inoffensive brain just didn't realize it

I think we're all better and stronger people after this. Now breathe out.

^Surely that's not real, and what's it doing here Eddilly?!

I don't breathe out.

Wait to sharks breathe

If I wasn't bombarded with IC stuff every semester in college, I would've assumed Kony 2012 to be some kind of presidential advertisement.

^ That's what I thought. A friend on my fb had a status like " Obama 2012 vs KONY 2012" Soo at first I though he was some American politician.

But, my thoughts are that Kony 2012 movement or whatever has really great intentions, but the whole Invisible Children charity has too much controversy around it to be completely trusted.

I dunno
