10 reasons I love Coldplay

Ever since the release of Parachutes, I’ve been a keen advocate of Coldplay

Yahoo! Contributor Network - Chris Martin of Coldplay performing at Stade de France Paris, France - 02.09.12

Coldplay are one of the most popular bands in the world. They have released five albums, sold over 60 million records around the world and collected dozens of glittering awards, but they still continue to be relentlessly mocked by those who don't appreciate their efforts.

For me, the release of their second album, A Rush Of Blood To The Head confirmed their status as one of my favourite bands in modern pop. Yes, I enjoyed Parachutes, Everything's Not Lost is still one of my favourite tracks by the group, but it wasn't as cohesive at their follow up effort.

And then I saw Chris, Jonny, Guy and Will perform live and it changed my life. Following that show I have made sure to attend at least one of their concerts when they tour, and each time they have continued to astound me further.

Some people still don't get it Coldplay. That's fine. But for those of us that do, they continue to enthral. Here are the 10 reasons why I love Coldplay …

Chris Martin

The first gentleman of rock, Chris Martin is a well-spoken and polite individual who just happens to create rousing anthems that captivate millions. He is also married to one of the most beautiful women on the planet, but has so far managed to escape the trappings of fame, and just concentrates on his music instead. An idol for all.

Seeing Them Live Will Change Your Life

Watching Coldplay live is an historic event that you will constantly look back to as one of the key moments of your life. It's true. You can see that the boys give their all up on stage, and it just reflects back onto the audience who remain enchanted by every song that they play. It also helps that they have a host of tunes to choose from.

Group Dynamic

Coldplay are often compared to U2, mostly because of the way that they sound, but also due to the fact that the four members of the band continue to act as if they are genuine friends. Stories continue to emerge of the quartet bickering whilst recording, but that's fine, because we all fight with our BFFs from time to time.

Fix You

At the conclusion to one of the band's most rousing hits, you've either a) cried, b) raised your fists in joy, c) mimed air guitar along Buckland, or d) done all of the above. It's an inspirational hit.

They're Misunderstood

Most people mistake Coldplay for a soppy group that play depressing songs, but that couldn't be further from the truth. The likes of Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, Viva La Vida, Speed Of Sound and In My Place are stirring pieces of music that should have you dropping shapes instantly.

They're Nice

In every interview that they give, Chris, Guy, Jonny and Will just seem like a really nice and genuine bunch of chaps, and I for one would love to have a few pints with them if I ever got the opportunity. Standardly, they would be buying.

They Care

Forget about Chris' attempts to cure world hunger, I mean up on stage. Whenever they play live, each member of the group gives 100% and reacts to the audience's, and their fellow band mates, responses instinctively. On Coldplay's recent live DVD, Martin described the excitement before his gigs in an almost intimate manner, saying, "It's 30,000 lives colliding."

Celebrity Friends

Coldplay aren't afraid to get their famous chums up on stage with them too, and the likes of Simon Pegg, Gary Barlow, and Peter Kay have each popped up during their shows.

Christmas Lights

Most legitimate bands avoid the temptation to release a track for Christmas, citing it as tacky, but not Coldplay. Their 2010 hit is supremely catchy and even slightly emotional, and is the perfect song to open presents too. I get a bit teary just thinking about it.

Coldplay Parties

During my years at university, me and my roommate would constantly get drunk, intricately select our favourite Coldplay songs, comprise our dream set list, press play and then dance until the wee hours. They were ecstatic times. I'm not going to lie though, a window was broken, the police were called, and dignity was lost during these momentous occasions.
