Telecaster Deluxe vs Telecaster Thinline

Featured Replies

Can anybody help me to compare Fender's Reissue '72 Telecaster Deluxe to an original '72 Telecaster Thinline, like the ones Jonny's got? I'm considering buying a new guitar, one which could give me the sounds similar to the ones in these videos.

I could just get the Telecaster Thinline Reissue, or even an original, but I love the looks of the Deluxe. Electronically, they look very similar, but I don't want spend $800 only to find I don't like the sound. I guess what I'm after is a guitar that can deliver the tone heard in the videos above, but without compromising looks. I don't really have a price range.

Humm.. I prefer the looks of the 72' Telecaster Thinline and I have one and can get a tone close to Jonny's in some songs.

I don't think Jonny ever used the deluxe one, Chris uses them for more rhythm stuff.

The 72' Telecaster Thinline, have more sustain and volume being semi-hollow.

I can't tell you which is better but the 72' Telecaster Thinline is just amazing! But if you go for the Deluxe you won't have a bad sounding guitar, just a diferent sounding guitar. Both are great!

Most conventional wisdom actually suggests a solidbody guitar has more sustain, but definitely read more about the differences between a solidbody and semi-hollowbody (you can google this very easily). One consideration is you can get a hollowbody to feedback more easily, which is occasionally an important part of the Coldplay sound.

I think you see Jonny using the thinline more often than anything else from the AROBTTH tour onwards anyways. Try the MX-era Strat just to see what happens. :p (but no really, having that tremolo can give you some great results like in Paradise's solo).

If you're really going for Jonny's sound, a lot of it comes from play-style and effects anyways.

Edit - Jonny uses a solidbody Telecaster in most of the Parachutes tour. I don't remember which one...but if you want an early Coldplay sound you can't go wrong there either.

It's mostly the pickups I'm concerned about. Though they are the same, it looks like the Deluxe has got 250K pots whereas the Thinline's got 500K ones which can apparently result in quite a different sound. And yes, Jonny's sounds are largely influenced by his effect pedals, a few of which I've already got. (Boss DD-5, ProCo RAT, Boss RV-5). And Jonny has used Telecaster Deluxes, have a look at this:

Don't forget about the rack units and the amps, they have a huge influence as well in his tone. I also have this pedals and can get some close tones with them, but not quite the same. For overdrive and distortion he uses mostly his HBE Powerscreamer pedal, that really gives you one step ahead to getting his tone.

The 250k pots has less treble than the 500k.

That is just a kind of exception appearance of him using the Deluxe. In concert he uses mostly the Thinline, Jazzmaster and now the Nash Strat S57. Well actually depends on the era, he used so many diferent guitars, but the Thinlines are the ones who were always there, and used in most songs.

But dude, don't overthink it. Go for the one you feel more into, both will get great results for getting Jonny's tone. I can tell that you really like the Deluxe, so just go for it. I for one would buy a Reverend Jetstream HB Black, cause I just love them. :D

This is one of my dream guitars

The blonde 1974 telecaster deluxe, and the best thing is that an original one does not cost that much, between 3000-4000 euros so it's not like a normal telecaster or strtocaster. A Jazzmaster is arround the same price aswell and then I mean an original, not a reissue.

Dave Welsh from The Fray used one a lot which gives him really nice tones.

Yeah!! Those look brilliant! If only they didn't cost that, I'd already have one. The natural/blonde is easily my favourite finish, with black as a second, which is why I'm so tempted to go for the Tele Deluxe Reissue.

Not entirely sure it's the 1974 model, but some other bloke else used them quite a lot too... :^)

Oh! sorry I ment that tele deluxe and jazzmaster guitars (original) is far from expensive if you compare them to original telecasters (1951) and stratocasters (1954-1963) Is there reissues of the blonde tele deluxe?

I have only seen the black and the brown ones

No, you're right. They only come in in black, brown and sunburst. I wish they did; that's what I meant.

The thinline re-issues are great guitars. The only problem is the pickups. They are nothing like the original Wide Range Humbuckers. In fact they are just regular (not even great) PAF size humbuckers potted in a wide range case. The original Wide Range pickups were designed by Seth Lover as an alternative to Gibson's PAF buckers, with a more meaty tone than fender's usual single coils but still retaining the clarity fender guitars are known for. They used a different magnet - Cunife, which is no longer available. Most pickups now use Alnico magnets. The original pickups are very rare and therefore expensive. They sound very very different from the pickups that come on the re-issues. There are a few alternatives, I have a set of these in my "Sunny" http://oilcitypickups.co.uk/wrandknuckle.html and they sound great. They are hand built and designed to give a very close sound to the originals. You can see the guitar in my avatar pic.

I may do just that with a Tele Deluxe Reissue. I assume they install it for you... Because I'm terrible at that sort of thing.
