Uh oh:

Weezer lead singer Rivers Cuomo was hurt in a bus crash around 7:30 am Sunday morning while traveling to Boston from Toronto for a concert Monday at Boston University's Agganis Arena.

Along with another passenger, Cuomo, 40, was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, New York after complaining of bruising to the ribs.

Cuomo's wife, daughter and another passenger were also on board, but were not injured.

The back of the bus skidded on ice, according to CNN, which interviewed the bus driver. The bus then "went into the median and hit some reflective posts before crossing back over the highway, going over the guardrail and landing in a ditch."

It had snowed about two inches in the area the night before, and on Sunday morning the roads were wet, according to Sgt. Brian Dollard of the New York State Police. Officials do not believe drugs or alcohol played a part in the accident.

Weezer are currently on tour for their latest album, 'Raditude,' with several more U.S. dates lined up in December in January.

Hope he's alright :stunned:

i came in here to post that :P

i've heard minor injuries, and it doesn't look too bad. plus, i haven't hear anything about postponing/canceling tour dates, so that's good!!!

*is still worried* :uhoh::bigcry:

Rolling Stone reports that they have cancelled all remaining December dates :uhoh:

In a harrowing post on Weezer’s official Website, band pal Karl Koch details the tour bus accident that injured frontman Rivers Cuomo severely enough to force the cancellation of the band’s remaining December tour dates. Cuomo, who Koch reports remains hospitalized, suffered three cracked ribs, “painful internal damage” and a lower leg injury; band assistant Sarah Kim fractured a lower vertebrae and two ribs; the bus’ other passengers — Cuomo’s wife, two-year-old daughter and her nanny — and driver were not injured.

Koch writes that as RS reported earlier, the tour bus skidded on ice and careened across several lanes of traffic on I-90 in upstate New York, crashing over a guardrail and into a muddy ditch. Cuomo was alone, sleeping in the bus’ back lounge at the time of the incident, and he was trapped and unable to speak immediately after the crash due to his injuries. Emergency responders used the “jaws of life” to pry the back window of the bus off to free Cuomo, and Koch writes that he was horrified by the scene once the other buses in the convoy caught up to the accident site.

“I couldn’t believe what was happening in front of me, as Rivers lay so helpless, shivering in the center of the chaos, and meanwhile the sun was coming up and revealing an utterly beautiful light covering of snow on the surrounding trees,” Koch writes. His post includes chilling photographs of Cuomo being removed from the bus on a stretcher and the bus’ extensive damage.

Kim has been released from the hospital, but Cuomo was transported to a larger hospital for observation. “He is resting about as comfortably as could be expected now, and we were relieved to hear that surgery is unlikely,” Koch adds.

Weezer were scheduled to perform Monday night at Boston University’s Agganis Arena, December 9th at Washington, DC’s Patriot Center and December 10th at Camden, New Jersey’s Susquehanna Bank Center. The status of the rest of the band’s Raditude trek, which is slated to resume January 9th in San Francisco, is still unclear. Koch writes that refund information for the December shows will be posted on Weezer’s Website when it becomes available, and that the band intends to reschedule the canceled dates.

Today at 7:18 AM EST, about 40 miles West of Albany on I-90, the weezer tour bus carrying Rivers and his family and assistants lost control as it hit a patch of black ice. The driver employed every ounce of skill he had in fighting to keep the bus upright, as the vehicle violently fishtailed over the highway. And while the bus did indeed go off the road, plunging about 8-10 vertical feet into a muddy ravine off to the right of the Thruway thus coming to a very abrupt stop, it did not flip or roll, despite having plowed right over a guardrail, flattening it. Kudos to the driver for somehow keeping things as level as they could be - surely this story would have been far more tragic if not for his actions.

Nonetheless the damage was severe, and everyone on the bus was either terrified or injured or both. The bus contained Rivers, his wife and daughter, their nanny, and Rivers' assistant Sarah. Both Sarah and Rivers' wife were pitched out of their upper level bunks onto the floor 5 feet below. Somehow Rivers' wife was uninjured, but Sarah sustained 2 fractured ribs and a fractured lower vertebrae. The baby daughter was in her crib unit and was fine, as was the nanny who was sleeping near the floor in her bunk at the time. However in the back lounge, Rivers was tossed around violently, waking up as he landed back on his mattress. He recalled not hitting anything, but later we learned that he must have, as he cracked 3 ribs and sustained some mostly minor but very painful internal damage, as well as hurting his lower leg somehow.

The interior of the bus was a chaotic mess with broken glass, smashed glasses and plates, food and clothing items strewn everywhere, as well as the refrigerator flying off the wall and many drawers coming right out of their slots, spewing their contents everywhere. On top of it the sliding interior doors were fused shut and the bus's electronics were ruined, so no one could get into the back lounge where Rivers lay immobile and unable to speak due to the pain in his ribcage. To top it off, the front door was jammed shut with 5 feet of heavy wet mud up pressed against it so there was no way to leave the bus.

Finally, using the jaws of life to remove a rear window bar, the local EMTs and firefighters got a ladder across the ravine to the rear bus window, where they could get to Rivers, eventually getting him and Sarah out on stretchers and into an ambulance. Meanwhile they dug frantically in the mud at the front of the bus, clearing the front door so everyone else could come out. To access the rest of the bus from Rivers' lounge, the fused sliding door was destroyed by the firefighters.

The other buses pulled up within 20 minutes of the accident, and already a long line of firetrucks and EMT vehicles were on the scene. I threw on my shoes and walked up just as the jaws of life were being turned on, catching a glimpse of Rivers lying inside on his back surrounded by EMTs. I couldnt believe what was happening in front of me, as Rivers lay so helpless, shivering in the center of the chaos, and meanwhile the sun was coming up and revealing an utterly beautiful light covering of snow on the surrounding trees. I dont know how to describe the wave of awfulness that gripped me as I watched, but adrenalin took over and the next thing I knew I was in the passenger seat of an ambulance transporting Rivers and Sarah to the hospital in Amsterdam, NY, about 10 miles from there. That adrenalin would sustain me all day, as everyone's did, from family to band to crew - everyone pitched in to help however they could all day as things unfolded.

Fast forward to now - Sarah was discharged, a 3-4 week period of extreme pain awaiting her as she heals from her injuries the only way possible, with time and gritted teeth. Rivers was transported to a larger area hospital where he remains under observation. He is resting about as comfortably as could be expected now, and we were relieved to hear that surgery is unlikely. Hopefully tomorrow the docs will have more info. You don't fool around with internal injury. Whatever happens, we forsee some gritted teeth in his future too.

We are sorry to say that the rest of the December Raditude Tour has been cancelled - when we can reschedule the dates we will, of course. I have no ticket or refund or whatever info at this time, but stay tuned to this site and the ticketing websites for more info. For now its a waiting game for all of us. Thanks for your kind thoughts and good wishes, we need them!

Damn, it was worse than I thought :(

Sorry about your concert Marisa, but I know it'll be rescheduled (actually a good thing because I've had tremendous luck with rescheduled concerts)

News from Karl (sounds like Rivers is doing way better)

Its been a full day and a half since the terrifying bus accident that hurt Rivers and his assistant Sarah, and everyone in the weezer camp is very grateful for the outpouring of concern and support that has happened since the news broke. Thank you for all your kind thoughts!

The update: Sarah went home today with the rest of the band keeping an eye on her on the flight, starting what will surely be a frustrating and painful 3-4 weeks of recovery. We all wish her the speediest of healing. She's a very tough girl, we know she can do it. Meanwhile in the hospital, Rivers has had a much better day than yesterday. He went from being barely able to talk and open his eyes yesterday to partially sitting up, talking clearly, reading books and checking the internet, plus his color and energy seemed much brighter. And then finally in the evening he was given some good news.

To back up a bit, Rivers' internal injuries included both a small cut on his spleen and a small puncture in his lung. An internal cut needs to be carefully monitored to see if it is healing up or not. The lung puncture was small so the lung did not fully collapse, and thus no surgery was needed for that, but it also has to be monitored carefully to avoid fluid build up. Today the doctor announced that Rivers blood pressure had stabilized, meaning the spleen was no longer leaking - it was on the mend. And his lung seemed to be gaining strength and holding up, meaning it too looks like it will mend itself with time. All this is great news so far. Plus he was given the go ahead to eat some real food again - a very positive sign!

Tomorrow the doctor says it will be time to see if Rivers can stand up again. If that goes well and his vital signs remain stable and improving, he will get to go home pretty soon! Wish him well - your positive energy and thoughts are working so far!

Now we come to the mystery of Rivers' right leg. He was totally unable to move it after the accident, but doctors were mystified as there were no broken bones and no signs of impact on it. Today after a day of icing and compression, he was able to wiggle his toes again. And he remembered a small detail - he recalled that that same foot was sort of hurting late the night before as he went to bed in the bus - after the Toronto show. That got me thinking...

During the Toronto show, Rivers pulled an act of Raditude that may have been the real culprit - after the Kids/Pokerface performance, during which he appeared up in the ACC's bleachers in a blonde wig, he was supposed to return to the stage via a particular set of stairs to the floor level. But during the song, lots of fans ran over to the closed seating area and danced around Rivers as he sang. Once the song was over, security had a hard time getting the people to return to their seats, and Rivers made his way down to the edge of the seats on an unplanned route, trying to get back to the stage as quickly as possible. When he got to the end, there were no stairs, and with the lights low for song changeover, he couldn't tell he was about 6 feet off the floor level. I was directly below him and reached up hoping he'd grab my hand but in the darkness he couldn't see me, and he launched over the railing onto the floor 6 feet below. He landed good and finished the show with no apparent injury, but I strongly suspect that his Raditude took him through the show, only to reveal that he had sprained his ankle later on.

Another mystery has been solved as well, which was how did Rivers get his injuries when he apparently didn't hit anything? He recalled not bouncing off of anything, but there was one detail he didn't realize - that the bus dropped 8-10 feet into the ditch. He said it felt like he never left his mattress - but the mattress was not tied down, and clearly was not where it should have been when the EMTs found him - it must have taken flight when the bus suddenly dropped, with Rivers riding it face down! Rivers injuries to his back and side mean he must have struck the bus's ceiling, possibly hitting a light fixture or other irregular shape. In the pitch darkness of his back lounge during sleep time, he would not have seen that he was actually airborne for a second - the mattress and Rivers remaining level as the bus around him dropped away - and must not have felt whatever struck him in his side and back due to the shock of the situation.

There is another part of the story that we pieced together later on as well. Rivers' bus was being followed about a quarter mile back by the Jack's Mannequin bus. Their bus driver witnessed the accident, and immediately called who he thought was Rivers' bus driver. But right before this tour started, the man who was supposed to be Rivers bus driver had to excuse himself to go to the hospital and was thus replaced by Johnny Cox, the driver who did his best to keep the bus upright during the crash. Jack's Mannequin's driver hadn't learned that yet. So the original driver, resting at home after his own hospital stay, got this early morning call asking if he was ok, but at first had no idea it was in reference to the crash! The drivers quickly sorted out the confusion and soon everybody was getting the needed calls to return to the scene of the crash, including the highway patrol and 911. Kudos to all the tour drivers, whether they were actually driving or not! Their brotherhood and devotion to safety has solved many a problem and turned a lot of bad road situations around.

You know, we take a lot of rock musicians for granted because, with rock essentially starting in the 60s, most of them are still walking amongst us. And those who have died usually obtain legendary status because of how their music lives on after their passing. It's incidents like the one with rivers that makes me realize how lucky we are to have our musical heroes alive. It also makes you realize that they can be taken away in a blink of an eye. Glad rivers is ok.

Rivers can walk again!

And its Brain's birthday! :cheesy:

...People, in all the chaos and confusion of the accident, lettuce not forget our distinguished guitar player Brian Bell, who has a birthday today. Happy Birthday to Brian!

Brian's biggest birthday wish is for Rivers and Sarah to have a speedy recovery. And so far, it appears he is getting his wish. Both are fighting a lot of pain, and will be for weeks - but both are making strides every day. Yesterday (Tuesday) Rivers finally made it onto his feet for the first time since the crash, going on 2 hospital hallway walks with the aid of a walker. This is a great sign, and will only lead to increased mobility and more flexability as the days proceed.

Meanwhile the docs say his insides are continuing to improve, but they have told him that while he will likely be released in the next few days, He aint getting on a plane anytime soon - too risky to his lung. So when the time comes that he is discharged, getting him back to L.A. will be an interesting adventure!

Another addendum to the crash news, in response to various comments and questions that have cropped up:

The driver of the bus, Johnny Cox was not injured in the crash - I forgot to include that in the original story. And contrary to some skeptical comments Ive seen, Mr. Cox's actions really did make a difference - specifically, he was faced with a bus that was sliding leftward into the median of the highway, which was a fairly steep incline, and at the angle the bus was sliding, in Johnny's words it "would have meant flipping for sure - so i wasn't gonna let it go that way, no sir". He put everything into getting the bus back on to the roadway, and succeeded. At that point, the bus's momentum then took it over to the right side of the road, and JC was unable to stop it from leaving that side of the road. But the deep muddy ditch, while a dangerous place to land a bus, was definitely a safer choice than the median for sure - it was sort of a channel that grabbed the bus like a slot car and held it and stopped it once it fell in. In other words, there was no room for the bus to flip there due to the walls of the ravine holding it in place. Plus its soft base quickly stopped the bus from moving. Back over on the slanted median however, things would have been much less possible to control.

...the December Raditude Tour shows (that actually happened) will indeed be added to the Official Bootleg Series. Not sure when yet, but they will be added!

...coming up this weekend! Mtv Subterranean, hosted by Weezer! Air date: Sunday Night (Monday Morning) December 13th 2:00 A.M. E.S.T.
