Coldplay takes on a new direction? Could demos make a comeback?

Featured Replies

In several interviews the band stated that they'd like to take their final album (and ideas) in a direction that commemorate's their career, "One day we’ll do a thing called Alphabetica, which will be lots of outtakes and songs that didn’t fit anywhere..."

Does this mean we could finally get a release of songs like "A View From the Top" and "Bloodless Revolution" Or will it be more like "Tomorrow" and "Afaik" Or it could both!?

What do you think the band's last album/projects will include?

I don't think Alphabetica will be their final album, I think it'll be more a separate project album which isn't part of their main discography timeline. To he fair, the announcement of Alphabetica seemed to coincide with that hacker who was charged at the beginning of this year for leaking Coldplay songs. My thoughts are that they saw how much of their unfinished stuff is actually out there, and how willingly people are to go out of their way to listen to it; and realised they could make a bit of money by making it accessible to all from the most legit source: themselves

There are quite a lot of finished songs that would fit on Alphabetica fine after mastering, and I'd imagine that they'll polish/rerecord some of the more complete demos to make them album-ready. I can bet Famous Old Painters will end up on it since the EL version is a complete song, as will tracks like Vampire Symphony and maybe Tomorrow (no pun intended). I think tracks like Bloodless Revolution are too unfinished, and they'd require as much effort to complete them as simply making a new song from scratch. Then you've got songs like Weirdo which people reckon could end up in the musical... so who knows?!

There's that many leaked songs out there that we could probably compile a relatively complete A-Z list of what might be on Alphabetica. On the topic of leaked songs, I'm surprised that a complete version of Neon Forest hasn't been leaked yet. Maybe (hopefully!) that'll end up on Alphabetica if it doesn't get a proper release before that

Honestly, I don't understand the current dynamics of the band. After listening to a considerable amount of leaks (demos and unreleased tracks) I came to the conclusion that the band has really good material that can be finished and even reworked, but at the same time I feel that there is something that is preventing them from releasing it. What exactly? Well, I don't have the answer.

I believe that "Alphabetica" is a conceptual title for a future project and not something definitive. It is worth remembering that in 2010 the band was going to release a new album but it was scrapped and now all that is left are a few leaked tracks, such as: "Spanish Rain" and a demo of "Love In A Lethal Dose". Of course there are many other tracks from this 2010 album. What I mean is that when it comes to Chris Martin himself (who is a perfectionist lol) openly talking about future projects, it is not possible to be 100% sure that it will actually happen.

It would be very disappointing if the band didn't release any of the unreleased songs we have heard in the past year. Take a look at The Race (the Whatever It Takes version), Tomorrow, Famous Old Painters, Wedding Bells, and all the other songs, there's tons of content that many fans would come to enjoy for years to come. I hope Alphabetica lives up to it's expectations and we the fans get what we truly want. The band for sure needs to explore their older content nowadays. Unless Chris suddenly announces Alphabetica's cancellation at a random concert lol.

To be honest, I really hope that the Ghost Stories version of The Race gets released. Same with Famous Old Painters (2020) version.

I feel like a better way to get unreleased material out and print money for themselves would be to start pumping out boxsets. They could do it after LP12 comes out as a way to keep the brand active. We already know AROBTTH was planned with leftover songs like Idiot. X&Y could come packaged with X&Y (Chris's Version). MX could come with Tomorrow and the unfinished Wedding Album, AHFOD could finally give Colors of the Soul a home, and of course Everyday Life would be stunning. It would be more satisfying that releasing one song per letter.

I had an idea for albums (not just Coldplay) which would be the normal album but with extra songs added as part of the normal run of the album, rather than as bonus tracks. For example, an MX rerelease with Moving to Mars between Major Minus and UFO. Or Moon Music with Man In The Moon, The Karate Kid and A Wave as part of the normal tracklist.

That said I'd love to see some of the unreleased songs get proper releases as part of box sets. A Ghost would be my top pick, since most of my other favourite unreleased songs have been leaked in decent or good quality already.

I actually think Lady Gaga just did this with the release of an additional song on her recent album.

It could be fun. Coldplay doesn't seem to like going back and changing their original vision but in the MOTS era I'd be all for it given I don't think the albums are all that terrific.

Oh that's crazy 🙃 - I had the same idea 😃! Thats why I PMed you and asked for VLV era leaks. So I could include them, as well as Prospekt's March and the B-Sides of the VLV era singles. Still I chose not to include "Young and in Love", beacause it's great, but very similar to Lovers in Japan. "Famous Old Painters" to me sounds a bit different as the rest of VLV, so I decided to add it as a bonus track. "Don Quixote" is also excluded. The lyrics of the studio version sadly aren't as good as the one performed life:

I attach a screenshot of the VLV expanded tracklist. I also did this with AROBTTH, X&Y and AHFOD and a few of Ed Sheeran's albums. Are there leaks of the AROBTTH, X&Y and AHFOD era, wich are good enough to add to the album? I think "A Ghost" and "Outta this World" are. I can drop the other expanded tracklists to, if you or someone else is interested 🙂.
