  5. for those of you who forget, a free-market economy runs in cycles. the same economic downturn occured at the end of the clinton years and blossomed in the first couple of years of the bush years; this was magnified by 9/11. obama, mccain, ron paul, or britney spears will not be able to change the fact that the economy fluctuates. surely the president influences economic growth by implementing policies such as tax-cuts (which are a proven way of economic stimulus), but on the whole the president has very little say in the performance of the economy. the best way to prevent yourself from being the victim of recession years and high unemployment is to make yourself skilled enough to be immune from unemployment. make yourself invaluable to a certain industry/company so that you always have a job. a smart, driven person will seldom have to worry about a recession.

MUSIC: Upcoming albums 2008: 'Prospeckt' Submitted by on 01-30-08, 6:01 pm By Maria Hibbard "The greatest piece of music ever made." In an interview with The Washington Post, Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin set the stakes high for his band's fourth album, due out this May or June. The band's effervescent, "very heavy soft rock" sound, as described on their Web site, may have faded into the background since the release of "X&Y" in 2005, but the band promises to rocket back to the public's attention with the tentatively titled "Prospeckt." It's been 10 years since Coldplay, then known as Starfish, played their first gig at a bar in London, and somehow, in these 10 years, Coldplay has become every man's band, one that spans age and genre barriers - although they are apt to have teenage girls swooning over them more than 50-year-old men. Their gentle sound and somewhat uplifting lyrics radiate humanity and compassion, and even though it may seem tacky, their activism about free trade automatically shuffles them into a category with those bands you "should" like. If the buzz surrounding this fourth album is anything like "X&Y," everyone will admit to "liking" Coldplay to at least some degree. In 2005, my friends were playing "Clocks" on the piano, my teenage classmates and my aged teachers counted down the days to the next tour stop together, and my music history teacher sang "Don't Panic" in class. Chris Martin's shaky tenor appeases countless females with its suggestion of male sensitivity (gasp!), and the band's subtly dramatic, smooth instrumental accompaniment makes its sound unique. All the same, in the three years since its last release, the band has become the quintessential "feel good" band - a local radio station adopted "Fix You" as their theme song for their charity benefits. Somehow, Coldplay has secured its place in rock history, transcending traditional boundaries, and the expectations for this new album are high. In "Prospeckt," Coldplay's challenge will be to follow hits such as "Trouble" and "Yellow" with songs that resonate with just as many people. Martin promises satisfaction, at least in this area. In an interview with The Washington Post, he insisted this album will contain the "quintessential song that everybody should hear before they die." This song must be a small gem, however - the album caps out at 42 minutes. Martin also described to the Chicago Sun-Times that the album will be a "fast, dark and heavy affair," possibly "with no pianos." Although it may be hard to imagine Coldplay without its signature, cascading keyboard arpeggios, this album will reveal a slightly different sound for the band, for they spent time recording in Latin America and experimenting with Hispanic sounds. The specific songs featuring this are not yet known, possible tracks include "Mining on the Moon," "The Fall of Man" and "The Butterfly." The album is rumored to come out in May or June, but the band has not set a specific date - apparently, you cannot rush brilliance. In the words of Chris Martin, "I can't tell you about it, but it's basically genius." Coldplay promises to astound once again.
  10. Chris Martin credits Travis with starting Coldplay. What does that tell you? I'm looking forward to Oasis' new album more so than Coldplays. The title of Coldplay's new album should be Moses with an Apple, and have his two kids on the album cover.
