Girl, 15, becomes Britain's youngest pig farmer
Emma Cianchi's parents thought she might ask for a horse for her birthday. Instead, she said that she would quite like some piglets. They were meant to be pets. But a year later, now aged 15, Emma is Britain's youngest pig farmer. Every morning before school she spends an hour mucking out and feeding her growing herd of rare-breed pigs and does the same after she returns. Life is getting harder for small farmers but that has not deterred her. After starting with two Berkshire piglets for her 14th birthday, she is now breeding pigs in a field at the back of the family home at Preston-on-Wye, near Hereford. She has 20 rare-breed pigs but sentimentality is restricted to ensuring that their short lives are the nicest possible. Seven have already been dispatched to the abattoir and the meat sold to parents of school friends and even her teachers. Emma is about to set up her own stall at Monmouth market in Gwent where she will sell sausages, bacon and joints of meat. She decided to diversify from the teenager's usual occupations of homework and television after receiving her birthday present and attending a course on pig-rearing. She said: “At the time I just thought it would be great fun to have some pigs as pets but after the course I became really interested in helping to preserve British rare-breed pigs. The best way to do that was to farm them. “I'm not sure what first attracted me to keeping these animals. It certainly wasn't the early mornings I would have to get used to, or the weird looks my friends would give me when I told them what I was doing and it definitely wasn't the money I would make - I'm still waiting for that. My friends think I'm mad.” One of the original Berkshires recently produced a litter of six, which have joined a growing herd of old English breeds including Tamworths, saddlebacks and middle whites. In order to look after them she has to get up every morning at 6am. Members of Emma's family have become involved. Her father Peter, a project manager for a building company, puts together the arks the animals live in and her mother Anne set up a website, emmaspigs.co.uk. Mrs Cianchi, a school bursar, said: “I thought that when we bought the field that maybe Emma might ask for a horse but it never crossed our minds she would want pigs. Because of her age we have had to register for VAT and things like that but to all intents and purposes it is her business.” Looking after pigs means Emma has to get her hands dirty, from helping to deliver piglets to packaging the meat and sausages. She said: “It is sad to see them go but on the other hand I know they have had a good life and by selling pork I'm raising interest and helping to preserve a rare breed. Without people buying the meat nobody would keep them. The meat is delicious and succulent compared with supermarket pork.” Marcus Bates, chief executive of the British Pig Association, said that as far as he was aware Emma was Britain's youngest pig farmer. He said: “Good luck to her. The average age of pig farmers is getting older and older and it is very difficult to get young people to come into the business. So youngsters coming into the industry is great news.” http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article4870700.ece

Boy, 7, goes on killing spree in zoo, feeding reptiles to crocodile
An “expressionless” seven-year-old boy broke into a zoo, bludgeoned to death giant lizards and fed them – and other live animals - to a crocodile named Terry in Outback Australia this week. Zookeepers were horrified when they arrived at work on Wednesday morning to see Terry, an 11-foot long saltwater crocodile, feasting on his fellow showcase reptilians at the Alice Springs Reptile Centre in the Northern Territory. At first they thought the animals, including the zoo’s favourite, metre-long, 20-year-old goanna, had escaped from their outdoor pens and accidentally become breakfast for Terry - the local zoo’s prize attraction. But further investigation uncovered CCTV footage of the local boy’s horrific 35-minute killing spree which began when he scaled the fence of the zoo, located in the centre of Alice Springs, a popular tourist destination town in central Australia, just before 8am on Wednesday morning. The blank-faced boy, who had evaded security cameras because of his slight size, then began his deadly rampage, smashing rocks on the heads of the reptiles and throwing them and other live animals into the crocodile enclosure, according to the zoo’s director Rex Neindorf. The boy killed 13 animals in total, including a large turtle, bearded dragons, goannas and lizards including Thorny Devils and Western Blue tongues, which are hard to find in captivity. “It’s absolutely devastating for us, we’re just horrified,” Mr Neindorf told Times Online today. “The goanna was 20 years old, she was an absolute doll.” The boy was so brazen he even climbed over an outer fence to get a closer look at the action. “He was lucky because if he got in there with the goanna, she would have torn him to pieces,” Mr Neindorf said. Police were called and questioned the boy, who comes from a family well known in the local area, but because of his age they are unable to do anything. According to Northern Territory law, children under 10 are not liable for criminal offences. “I thought for the sheer consequences of what he did that there would have to be some severe punishment, but he’s only seven, they can’t do anything to kids under 10,” Mr Neindorf said. “We’re going to see what we can do, maybe try and sue the family in the civil court, we’ll look down that avenue.” According to Mr Neindorf, the “nasty” boy’s brother was part of a group who attacked Terry the crocodile about five years ago. He said they often get kids trying to throw rocks at the animal enclosures from a nearby hill, but this incident is the worst that has happened in the history of the zoo. “He will just get worse and worse and worse, by the time he’s 10 he will be a hardened criminal,” Mr Neindorf said of the boy. The Alice Springs Reptile Centre is in central Australia, almost 300 miles from Uluru (Ayres Rock), and has 200 animals on display, including Perentie Goanna, Frill Neck Lizards, Thorny Devils, pythons, taipans and death adders, and, of course, Terry, the 440-pound salt-water crocodile. Earlier this week Scottish-born Vietnam veteran Arthur Booker disappeared while camping in a remote part of north-eastern Queensland. A three-day search uncovered nothing but his sandals and wrist watch. He is thought to have been taken by a salt-water crocodile. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article4874657.ece

Coldplay - UK Tour Date Changes - CONFIRMED BY ANCHORMAN, DETAILS ADDED
did you take insurance on the flights & hotels? Would be worth contacting them to see if you can claim the money back. (i know travelodge for example, offers insurance for £1 when you make a booking) I know its not the same as going to the concert, but would be better if you don't lose out financially as well.

30-Sep-2008: Datchforum, Milan - Tickets, Preview, Meetups, Review/Photos

Ask the Oracle on Coldplay.com (Now in session!)
October 3, 2008 - submitted by Nori, Hungary Q. Dear O, has any of the boys ever been offered a role in a movie? Would they accept it if they found the script good enough? The Oracle replies: Chris was offered a role in a huge film but the guys aren't actors, they're musicians and so won't be considering a career change at this point! FYI: I'm not going to reveal which film because that wouldn't be fair to the actor who eventually played the role; he might think he was the first and only choice! October 3, 2008 - submitted by Marvin, Malaysia Q. I'm anxious to know, which Oasis songs did Coldplay try out in their soundcheck ? I love Coldplay, and Oasis too. DO you think Oasis' new album will be a good one ? The Oracle replies: Well Marvin, they played around with Cigarettes and Alcohol in a recent soundcheck. I already KNOW the new Oasis album is a good one, I was pleasantly surprised, I'd given up on them years ago, but it's a return to form. October 3, 2008 - submitted by Fufu, Indonesia Q. Why did Coldplay translate "Viva La Vida" to "Death and all His Friends" and not "Live the Life?" The Oracle replies: They didn't. I think you are misunderstanding the title. The full album title is: Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends They're not saying that Death.. is what Viva la Vida means, it's more of an alternative title. October 3, 2008 - submitted by Ryan, United States of America Q. Oracle, Why do people who live in England who are studying math say, " my Maths" ? The Oracle replies: Mathematics sounds like a plural noun and so over the years we snuck in the s when we shortened it.
