  4. Tesco slammed for booze sales TESCO were today slammed by a council boss for selling discount boxes of beer to Rangers fans as they arrived in the city centre. The company’s Metro store on Market Street piled boxes of lager at the entrance to the shop which were snapped up by supporters who were in town in the early hours after travelling through the night. Councillor Pat Karney condemned the practice as “highly irresponsible” and marched into the store, ordering them to remove the booze from the shop entrance. Councillor Karney said: “Unbelievably at Tesco they had boxes of booze at the front entrance selling at discount. It is highly irresponsible and they have let Manchester down. “We had huge problems with this with the screening of the World Cup in Exchange Square. The police and council have asked them not to do this. They had been selling it from 6am. I have given Tesco a final warning and said that if they continue to do this they are putting their own licence to sell alcohol in jeopardy. “To be fair to Tesco when I pointed this out to them they moved the booze straightaway, but they should not have been doing it in the first place. But I have seen loads of young men with boxes of booze in Piccadilly Gardens and Cathedral Gardens at 8.15am. “This kind of selling encourages irresponsible drinking which in turn can lead to serious public order problems.” Click here to see pictures of videos and pictures of fans in Manchester Click here to share your pictures A spokesman for Tesco said: “We do take a responsible approach to selling alcohol and following the concerns from the councillor we have responded immediately and removed the items from the store entrance.” He said that the store had placed alcohol at the entrance before depending on promotions they were running. Roads into Manchester city centre were jammed today as convoys of Rangers fans who had travelled by car started to arrive around 7am. Vehicles were bedecked with Union Jacks and the atmosphere was boisterous and friendly as fans played football in Piccadilly Gardens. Frank Welsh, who had a ticket for the game said: “The welcome from people in Manchester has been great. I have not had much sleep as I am booked into the Ramada Hotel – next to Piccadilly Gardens – so it has been a bit noisy with our fans but they have been well behaved.” Thomas Clarke, 21, and Conrad Sewell, 19, who did not have tickets travelled overnight by car from Glasgow and slept in the vehicle in a Manchester car park after arriving at 4am. Thomas said: “Coming down the motorway there were thousands of cars full of Rangers fans – some were in limos.” Conrad said: “We are quite happy to be the underdogs and I think we will win 2-0 or 2-1.” Nine-year-old Kirk Henderson, from Glasgow had a ticket and was going to the game with his father, uncles, and grandfather. “It is the biggest football match I have been to in my life. I have been to all the home matches in the other rounds of the cup and I think we will win 1-0.” http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/1049539_tesco_slammed_for_booze_sales?rss=yes
  5. City centre trams stopped CITY centre workers are facing rush hour chaos as hordes of football fans have brought tram services to a halt. Metrolink operator Stagecoach said they have been forced to stop city centre services indefinitely today because throngs of supporters are blocking the lines. Meanwhile coach loads of fans risked missing tonight's match after getting stuck in huge tailbacks following a pile-up on the M6. The motorway was down to one lane, northbound between junction 18, Middlewich, and junction 17, Sandbach, and the slip road was closed to traffic for around two hours. One delivery driver who was transporting merchandise to the City of Manchester Stadium for the Uefa clash said the delays stretched back up to 60 miles. In the city centre, Metrolink staff were working with police to flag trams through Piccadilly Gardens but the decision to stop services was taken on safety grounds at 2pm. Services will run from Altrincham and Eccles to Manchester Central and Victoria to Bury but all other lines through the city will stay down until further notice. The 50 metre stretch between Piccadilly and Market Street, extending toward Moseley Street, has been worse affected with trams moving slowly since lunchtime. Stagecoach Metrolink duty manager Mike Thompson said they would clear the city of any trams before stopping services. He added: "We have been resorting to old fashioned methods with staff on the ground flagging trams through affected areas but it is just too dangerous and we have had to take the decision to cease services. "We are asking commuters to be patient but we cannot run an unsafe service. We will return services to normal as soon as fans have been moved on and it is safe to do so." Jonathan Williams, stuck on the M6, said: "There are coaches and cars full of fans wanting to get to Manchester for the match but it looks like a lot of people could be very disappointed. We've been stuck here over and hour and no-one's going anywhere. People have parked up their cars and are out in the sunshine - all we need now is a barbecue and a big screen." A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: "There was an accident involving three or four cars around 1pm and two people were trapped. We have managed to reopen the inside lane but clear-up is still taking place meaning there is a lot of traffic down to one lane. No one has been seriously injured." The M6 was reopened at 2.45pm and tail backs are now clearing. http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/1049660_city_centre_trams_stopped?rss=yes
  6. Knitting is all the rage at the moment. You just have to do a little searching around on the Web to find all sorts of compulsive knitters, knitting clubs, trendy knitters, knitters who are into blogging, and knitting parents. There are even some self-styled guerrilla knitters (the campaigning type, not knitting primates). There's a whole army of knitters out there, and if you're one of them Oxfam needs you! We're searching for knitters to turn their knitting needles into lethal poverty fighting needles. Staff in our Leeds office have just started a new campaign to create a giant baby blanket, with each square knitted representing a mother who did not survive pregnancy or childbirth to be able to care for her baby, because she couldn't access the medical care she needed. We're aiming to get 250,000 squares by September, which is the number of mothers who could have been saved in that time if decent healthcare had been available. We need knitters to make 9 inch squares for the giant blanket, which will be handed into the Government as a sort of 'patchwork against poverty petition', to demand a world where everyone has access to free basic healthcare. Stay tuned to Oxfam's website, as more details will follow as the campaign 'unravels' in the coming weeks. Or if you really can't wait that long and want to get started now, head on over to the Stitch and Bitch website for more details, or email Sarah Blakemore ([email protected]) in our Leeds office to find out more. And just in case you were wondering, after the giant blanket has been handed in, it will be dismantled and sold in Oxfam shops and at festivals. All money raised will go towards Oxfam's work to fight poverty, such as urgently needed midwife training in Yemen. http://www.oxfam.org.uk/applications/blogs/campaigners/2008/03/wanted_knitting_activists_to_d_1.html ------------------------------------------------------- The nice people at Oxfam want to enlist the help of knitters around the country to knit or crochet squares for a giant baby blanket, which will highlight the lack of medical care for mothers in Africa and South East Asia. Every minute, a woman with no medical care dies in pregnancy or childbirth Millions of mums in poor countries get low-quality health care, or are forced to go without it altogether. High fees, a shortage of hospitals and clinics, and not enough doctors and midwives means women struggle to get the medical care they need and all that too often they don’t survive to look after their babies. In Africa and South East Asia pregnancy and childbirth represent the biggest cause of death amongst women of childbearing age. Each square you can knit or crochet will represent a newborn baby, left needlessly without a mother because of lack of healthcare. These squares will be joined together and handed into the UK government in September Here are the instructions on how to contribute: Each square should be 9 inches in size and preferably made using double-knitting weight yarn. Please make sure that you use make a 9 inch square – odd sized squares can be very difficult to piece together. You can use any type of yarn, provided that it is washable. All colours are welcome. Superwash wool or washable cotton yarns are particularly suitable. Plain stocking stitch always curls up at the sides. You can prevent this by knitting a narrow border of garter stitch all round the square. To do this, just knit the first and last five rows (no purling!), and always knit the first five and last five stitches of every row with your stocking stitch in between. Many people like to make patterned squares. You can find a dictionary of stitch patterns available free at each of the sites below: http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches.htm http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/stitches.php Others may wish to use up different coloured odds and ends of yarn to make striped or multicoloured squares. Some ideas and examples are available here: http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting/patterns/afghans/sampler.htm http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/motifs_squares.php If you want to design your own multicoloured pattern, you can find special graph paper to do it at the sites below – just print out a sheet and have a go at creating your own unique square. http://www.sweaterscapes.com/lcharts3.htm http://www.thedietdiary.com/knittingfiend/KnittersGraph.html Crochet Squares are also very welcome. There is a wonderful selection of free patterns at the site below. You can enlarge the small squares by adding a few extra rounds until you reach nine inches. http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory.php To finish please weave in all yarn ends on you squares and, if necessary, block them neatly to size. This will save lots of time when it comes to assembling the blankets. Send knitted squares with your name, address and email by 1st August 2008 to: Sarah Blakemore Oxfam campaigns http://stitchandbitchlondon.wordpress.com/2008/01/26/oxfam-needs-your-help-knitters/

An interesting historical series or an opportunity to drool over Sean Bean? Discuss. :laugh3: Seriously though. I was given the Sharpe boxset as a birthday present, and have been re-watching the series. I've found myself appreciating the historical side of it more than I did when I was a teenager. THe filming is pretty impressive too.

  12. It is the classic wedding photograph pose – the happy couple smiling for the camera as they sign the register. But the tradition is being scrapped in register offices as a result of Government guidelines which state that photographing the register breaches data protection rules. It will mean an end to thousands of happy snaps – such as those taken at the wedding of TV weather girl Sian Lloyd and her husband Jonathan Ashman. The new guidelines say photographs of couples signing the register could invade the privacy of others because their signatures may be visible on the same page. There are further fears that details taken from the wedding snaps could be used by fraudsters planning identity theft and that the photos could be in breach of Crown Copyright. But critics of the move say it is absurd because the register is a public document and the information entered in it is readily available on the internet from the General Register Office. The new guidelines also express concern that couples concentrating on the camera rather than the page could make mistakes on the register or even cause damage to it. In some register offices, bemused couples have been told they must pose for pictures over the blank page of a "dummy" book. One register office official said: "We were told photos could not be taken of couples signing the register because it would breach data protection. It seems absurd as these are pictures of couples signing important personal documents. "It is hardly likely people are going to be able to read the names of other entrants on the page, let alone misuse that information." A spokesman for the Home Office, which has responsibility for the General Register Office, said: "There are data protection issues which we do raise when someone else's details are put in the public domain. "This is about being aware of people's identity information – if it's there in the register then it is problematic." Another spokesman explained: "Taking a photograph could be construed as a copy of the entry and a breach of the Crown Copyright. There are four entries to a double page so the details of another marriage could also be photographed. "There's nothing in marriage legislation which refers specifically to photography. But we advise against photos of signing of the register for various reasons. It will divert the couple from making sure the information is accurate and from signing it in the right place. "An error in an entry might be discovered after it had been signed by the registrar. If there is an error it can only be corrected by a marginal note. "There is also a high risk of damage to the register with a fountain pen when the bride and groom are looking at the camera and not the pen. "A blank page allows the couple to concentrate on the photograph and allows the registrar to prepare the marriage certificate for which they would otherwise have to wait." Register offices in Liverpool, Swindon, Durham and Wolverhampton all insist couples must pose with a dummy book and pen instead of capturing the real moment. A spokesman for Wolverhampton register office said: "Our superintendent ensures you cannot take any photos of the actual book. If they want this particular picture we give them a blank book to stand over." At Bury St Edmund's register office in Suffolk there is concern that computer technology could be used to steal information taken in a wedding photo. A spokesman said: "There's confidential information listed in marriage entries and with photographic digital enhancement you might be able to see those details if a picture were taken." A spokesman for Islington register office, North London, said they took a more liberal approach. He added: "If there are no other names on the page, or the photographer is doing a wide shot – say he's four to six feet away – then we allow the picture. When there is a close-up involved and there are other names in the book then we cover them, or let them pose with a blank page." But it seems that the ruling does not affect traditional church weddings. Church of England spokesman Steve Jenkins said: "The focus is always the couple, not the book. It would be obvious if someone started zooming and shooting the book instead. "I'm not aware of anybody being prevented from taking a photo the couple have requested because of data protection at a church wedding." http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=565423&in_page_id=1770
