  1. Coldplay - How Are They This Good? I went along to see Coldplay on Sunday night and I would have posted this yesterday but they had a second show in Brisbane and I didn't want to spoil it for anyone. Since I saw their Twisted Logic tour back in 2006 (actually I saw them twice, once at the end of '05 in Paris and again '06 in Brisbane when I got home) I've been hanging out to see their show again. I even posted about getting nervous when tickets went on sale. That's how much I love this band. Now from what I understand people are split down the middle when it comes to Coldplay. Half of people love them and half of people hate them. I don't understand why that's the case but I won't try to either. Let's just say that Sunday night was one of the best shows I have ever seen in my life, possibly the best. Their songs translate so well live that it's just awesome song after awesome song. And they have the whole package. Their stage production is simply unreal. At some points during the set I just didn't know what was happening. Instead all I could do was stand there in awe of how great the experience was. I'm useless and forgot to take any photos so I don't have any for this post but I'll try to paint a picture with words. Actually I'll do my best for one song. My favourite out of their new songs is "Lovers In Japan" and, wow, it went off. They had an enormous screen behind the stage which, when the song started, had really cool images of Japanese stuff that really cleverly fit in perfectly with the lyrics. But the best bit was when it hit the chorus. Thousands of little paper butterflies in different colours got blasted out over the audience and were lit with blacklights so they glowed with that awesome luminesence you get from blacklights. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was just incredible standing there. Each song had something different. In fact for a couple of acoustic numbers they ran up onto a tiny stage set up in the nosebleed section. The people back there went ballistic. But it wasn't just smoke and mirrors. The mix of the band was immaculate. They're one of the best sounding bands going around. Vocals were seamless and the band sound was full and spot on. The only minor disappointment was that they tried to cover up some samples a little bit. Their new album was always going to need some sampling live but I just wished they hadn't tried to cover it. I could go on but I won't. It was awesome. I'll stay on a high for a little while yet. Thank you Coldplay. Sunday night is what all concerts should be like. http://dbutts.blogspot.com/2009/03/coldplay-how-are-they-this-good.html
  2. I'll go ahead and say it; Brisbane is my favorite city in Australia. The reason is simple. Everything about it screams Chicago. If you don't look for landmarks and you ignore the side of the road that the cars are driving on, you could easily mistake the Brisbane architecture for buildings in Chicago. As far as size, it certainly doesn't compare to Chicago. It's different, but it undoubtedly reminds anyone who has been to it of Chicago. It was clean, safe, and surprisingly green for a big city. More on Brisbane later. The big highlight of the trip, and the reason we went in the first place, was to see Coldplay. Any chance you get to see the biggest band in the world while studying abroad... well, it's a tough thing to pass up on. Coldplay is currently touring the world and they were here in Brisbane on Sunday and Monday. I had never seen Coldplay in concert before, but they were nothing short of amazing. Our seats were nothing spectacular (they were behind the stage and to the right), but it was certainly a fine view. The crowd was awesome for a Monday, it was definitely sold out. The concert really made me realize how much I appreciate Coldplay's older songs compared to their newer stuff on Viva La Vida. The new stuff was great, but the old stuff is just impossible to beat. Luckily, they didn't just stick to their new songs; there were a lot of old ones mixed in. We made it back to our hotel after the concert, but because of a long cab ride and a late ending concert, it was pretty late. If it wasn't a Monday night, there might have been something to do. As it was though, the area was pretty much dead. We checked out the casino, which was fairly cool, but there were not really any bars or nightlife accessible nearby. The only people out seemed to be people coming back from the concert like us. However, with a little exploration, we found what has to considered one of the gems of the southern hemisphere; The Pancake Cafe. It was a bar that served liquor and pancakes located in an old church. An absolute testiment to human invention. They had quite possibly the best pancakes I've ever had, and certainly the best butter. Combined with their chocolate and butterscotch sauce and awesome maple syrup it was an awesome experience. I didn't have anything to drink, but I can't imagine the appeal of beer and pancakes together. http://wrigleyryan.livejournal.com/3081.html
  3. One of the best concerts I’ve been to! He was out of breathe for the first two songs (must have lost his voice the night before), but by the third song Chris Martin was into full gear, swinging and jumping around like a 10 year old with ADHD. Full points for enthuasism! They started the set with Life in Technicolour (Instrumental) and ended it with the version with lyrics. Other highlights include: Confetti during “Lovers in Japan” A girl passing out during “Fix You”. Yes, right at the part where the guitars kick in An acoustic set situated right in the middle of the audience far in the back row. I’m sure it was all rehearsed, but the band looked like they were really having a good time! They threw huge yellow balloons into the crowd. Just take a guess which song was this. A medley of “God put a smile on your face” and “Talk” Drummer, Will Champion can sing! The audience call for encore was the rousing “Whoooahh” from “Viva La Vida” I love the the new album songs live, especially “42″, “Death and all his friends”, “Lovers in Japan” and “Viva La Vida” Sing alongs for “The Scientist” and “Fix You” That was a pretty good show, if you asked me! http://jasonphoon.com/coldplay-brisbane-entertainment-center/

  5. Coldplay turn Acer Arena into intimate gathering of mates THERE is nothing more life affirming for a music fan than falling in love with one of their favourite bands all over again. And about 18,000 Coldplay fans staged an infectious love-in for the all-conquering rock band at their opening Sydney concert at the Acer Arena last night. While the self-deprecating band - which frontman Chris Martin refers to as soft rock - may insist they remain U2s understudy, Coldplay have put the Irish super group on notice that their crown can be taken. The British group, the biggest selling act in the world last year, achieved the almost impossible feat of making a cavernous arena an intimate gathering of mates. There is no disconnect between rock star and fan. Gallery: See Coldplay in action last night Martin keeps them as involved in the concert as he and his three band mates are. His energy levels, his yoga-honed flexibility, and his soaring voice were captivating. The Coldplay frontman is a force of nature. But so are his band mates. Guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion were also beaming with the exhilaration of playing to the converted who at times swelled in voice so loudly they almost drowned them out. The set was perfectly structured, a fusion of old and new from the song that started it all, Yellow, through to the title track hit of their fourth album, Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends. Coldplay cheekily also hinted at one of the big moments expected at their Sound Relief performance on Saturday with a chorus of John Farnham's You're the Voice. The crowd karaoke which raised the roof was another moment. And the deluge of paper butterflies which rained on the adoring audience during Lovers In Japan was another. You really just had to be there. Coldplay perform at Acer Arena tonight and Saturday and Sunday. But fans who will also be fronting up to Sound Relief at the SCG on Saturday are urged to get there early to not miss the bands opening slot at 12:15pm. There are limited tickets still available for both benefit concert and Coldplay's final show in Sydney. 10. New Zealand braces for the Cold(play) While Coldplay are busy rocking Australia, New Zealand is getting ready for the concert event of the year. Oxfam will be there next week to greet the masses for two sold-out shows. We’ll have 20 volunteers at Vector Arena each night, talking to people about Oxfam’s work to provide clean water and sanitation in some of the world’s poorest regions. Keep an eye out for people carrying 20 litre buckets on their heads, and text us to enter the contest for great prizes. In the meantime, you can check us out here. See you next week.. Jason. (Jason Garman - Communications Coordinator for Oxfam New Zealand. Oxfam/Coldplay tour blogger in waiting.. Jason will be taking over the reigns from Cara Bevington when the tour leaves Sydney). http://www.oxfamblogs.org/coldplay/?p=156 Coldplay wowed Brisbane After 3 years, the fans were hyped, ready and waiting for the return of their favourite lads from the UK - so there was plenty of energy and interest around what our Brissie volunteers had to say and show about Oxfam’s work on the Fairtrade and Close The Gap campaigns. The sight of our Oxfam green t-shirted brigade flashed amongst the thousands who thronged both nights to Brisbane Entertainment Centre, for their first live dose of Coldplay tunes since 2006. Quite a few in the crowd were obviously back for more - what’s more, many also rememberijng their chats with us about Make Trade Fair from last time, which made us smile. These fans obviously love their Coldplay music - but they also follow what else the band are involved with. A grand total of 1611 signed up to join Coldplay and Oxfam in supporting a just world without poverty - good work Brisbane-ites! And, it goes without saying, great shows! The Coldplay lads will be performing 4 shows at Sydney’s Acer Arena this week and Oxfam volunteers will be there on the ground, ready to talk about our work for a just world. Whether or not you are going to one of the Sydney shows, you too can get involved. Sign up. Take action. You’ve got power. It’s time for justice. Cara http://www.oxfamblogs.org/coldplay/?p=158
  11. Yellow is non-negotiable on the Wembley shirts :D That was the first thing the majority were ever in agreement one. Plus I think bright yellow is the colour that will stand out most, whilst also having a Coldplay relevance
  12. Just because you can't see a response, doesn't mean something isn't happening. None of you have access to the moderator's forum, so therefore none of you are aware of the discussions happening in there, and the ongoing issues which need resolving. The day to day running of this message board takes more than just posting a few messages & removing spam. There are different responses to different events. Banning someone who keeps rejoining with new usernames every time is a pretty pointless excercise, so other plans have to be devised & actions taken. Plus, banning people is a last resort on this forum. You really have to push & push for us to turn round and take that action, or do something in extreme contravention of the T&C's. Some threads/posts need moving straight away, others can be left whilst an issue is sorted. Not every response requires the same action.
  13. there's always one :P the US/Canada site doesn't do girlie shirts in the dark yellow, and I think its better to have the same basic colour. If everyone is happy to do so, we can have one in the UK/EU shop, and anyone who desperately wants a girlie shirt will have to find an EU buddy to source them one. SueDeNimes has also agreed to be our technical advisor. The work she has done in sourcing Spreadshirt, and also putting some of the designs into practice has been awesome. :D Now all that's left is for me to think about setting up the shops so we're ready to open once you guys have picked the Wembley 2009 design.
  14. First post updated with vids :D found a couple of new ones on youtube
  15. I wouldn't worry til about the 5th September. Our last few lots of tickets have all turned up 1-2 months before the show
  16. Is it very bad of me to have never before realised this is a Muse track?
  17. Yay! already answered. :) booooo! Marathon is 4 days after I come home from london. :( but if anyone was thinking of going, I booked train tickets last week and got a single from Manchester to London for £11 & coming back is £15. so you could go for the day, if they do those prices on a sunday!! :D That's what you get for talking about it where Phil can see you :P squeeeeeeeeeeee!! more Coldplay :D
  18. and the one on the 2nd March generated half the total responses :laugh3:
  19. Okay, so at 17 -1 Spreadshirt wins!! We'll shortly be looking at setting up the 2 shops, watch this space for more details. Next move: finalising shirt designs.
  20. Twittery type stuff (strangely enough, they seem to be lost in lots of Canadian twitters!!! ): JyeBoy: Just got back from Coldplay concert. Fricking amazing! ittykat: Saw Coldplay live tonight, I'll never forget the raining butterflies jasonwt: Coldplay rocked cheersbabie: @coldplay Guys Just came back from your Brissie Concert - FANTASTIC!!! Chris where do you get all that energy from? Truly Awesome!
  21. wow. they always say its the quiet ones you have to watch!!! quiet thread, and look what you all brought us :D thanks guys for the setlist updates, reviews and photos. they're pretty awesome :)
  22. You're right. The way he's doing it, it will be the mess of one warrant officer and one sgt. Point him in the direction of Eats Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss, if he still doesn't believe you.
  23. definitely think having stickers at the venue will be best bet. when we were queuing before, someone would mention a name at which point a discussion would ensue as to which username they were, and we kept getting confused!! t-shirts will definitely be go. the poll as to which shop we'll be using finishes this weeked. so keep an eye out for developments in the next few weeks :D
  24. Gratz guys :D Commiserations to those of you who were unsuccessful :( You could still buy one from MusicSkins so your ipod doesn't feel left out
  25. I can't see Dorothy Perkins stocking military style jackets just because Coldplay were wearing them. I would guess that it was a fashion trend which had been decided on before last June.
