this pale blue dot...
The text in that sobering video is excepted from a speech made by Carl Sagan. Here is a larger excerpt: Reflections on a Mote of Dust -- Carl Sagan (1934-1996) We succeeded in taking that picture [from deep space], and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam. The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity -- in all this vastness -- there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. It's been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character-building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known. (Excerpted from a commencement address delivered May 11, 1996. Dr. Sagan's book Pale Blue Dot expands on these ideas.) (source: http://obs.nineplanets.org/psc/pbd.html)

end of an era
Uni will take some getting used to - especially if you're moving away from your family, friends and everything that is secure and comfortable. But embrace the change and you'll find that college life has lots to offer - new people, new perspectives, new experiences. What I found was that college really leveled the playing field - everyone comes starts off freshman year with a clean slate. For me, uni offered me a chance to really define the person I wanted to be. Best part is, not only interacting with such a diverse crowd of people, but also finding those few people who share the same career and life goals and dreams as you. It's exciting. I just graduated uni last week, and I'm already missing it. :( Enjoy your summer holidays! :D

Sigur Rós
Attention everyone! I have a message from our "Missing in Action" top Sigur Ros fan, Will. :toff: During a long chat filled mostly with gobeldygook, he asked me with drunken fervor to tell you all "hi," and that even though he has gone away, he still "loves us all" very much. hahah Oh, and we've been instructed to keep some blood pumping in the veins of this thread (awful analogy by me). Tis all. Btw, if you ever get a chance to talk to Drunksie Will sometime, you should. Boy's a riot! :laugh3:

Oh, so sad. I too have completely neglected my favoritest thread on Coldplaying! :shame: BUT I'M BACK! I'm done with uni. I've graduated. And can now focus on the important things in my life.......:freak: Congrats to you Kathy for finishing too! :nice: Great feeling, eh? Anyway, in Mew-related news: there is this little project being organized by the fans for Mew (a gift from frengers around the world). I promised the organizer on Mewsite that I would splurge any details about it online. If you want to know what I'm going on about, PM me or talk to me on MSN, and I can tell you how you can contribute. Do so quickly though! The deadline is coming up SOON. Cryptic, huh? Bet you want to know more now. ;)
