  1. I'm torn between a 5 or 6. I gave it a 6 because it's a little closer to good than bad, I guess. The lyrics are bad, I suppose, but they're pretty standard Coldplay material. Certainly better than many favorites around here like Lovers in Japan, Glass of Water, Fix You, and so on. The music is nice enough, but my biggest problem is that (in a way terrifyingly similar to many songs on X&Y) the song never really takes off. It's loud and shiny, but I'm a bit bored by minute two. Usually their best arena songs manage to be bombastic but dynamic. Viva La Vida (the song), for instance, surprises with the little bells between the first two verses, before exploding at the end and then disappearing into lovely synth. Even so, I'm not calling this a sell-out. They're already one of the most popular bands in the world. Putting out pop as opposed to say, Clocks 2.0 (or maybe it'd be 3.0 by now) is riskier given the already established fan base.
  2. There should really be a bingo card for coldplay articles. Mention crying? Check. Mention Gwyneth? Check. Ignore the music? Check. I mean, really. I'm not exactly thrilled with this song, but "Words fail" is pretty much music journalism at its worst.
  3. I can only laugh at the notion that something "new" can be done. Everything has a predecessor. Every book, every film, every song, every haircut, every decision, every personality. Sometimes the lineage is traceable, sometimes it isn't. But it's always there. Every artist is indebted to other artists, who are indebted to other artists, and on and on and on.
  4. Er, ok. For what it's worth, Viva La Vida is my favorite Coldplay album, and I think this would've been one of the weakest tracks on it.
  5. Indeed, I feel the same way. Not sure how I feel about this particular song, though. Perhaps it'll sound better as the big conclusion to the album, if that is in fact where it's positioned. The lyrics don't really bother me, as I've said before. My problem is that for something that "builds," I just feel like I've heard the whole song by the time it's halfway through. Was expecting a build along the lines of LiT, which was thoughtful and terrific.
  6. Even if you hate the song, that's an absurd notion--as though they wouldn't be famous and rich if they released ten tracks of morse code sounds. They're at a point in their careers where they can do whatever they want and sell it. This is the music they want to make now. Like it or not. Only on this forum could a band with a first hit like Yellow sell-out.
  7. Deleted? There was an interesting quote in there about the song "impacting music in a big way [paraphrased]" and then whether the DJ that said it was drunk.... But that's about it. http://www.hot995.com/pages/toby.html
  8. Yeah, there are a million red flags on this thing. Surveys, for one. Also, the comment dates don't match the upload date, not to mention that the actual comments are... not always relevant. It's a .rar, too. Aaaand there's already 2000+ seeders? No thanks.
  9. Would love to be, but staying up til 6:00 am with a job interview at 9:30 might not be the brightest idea. Hopefully the song will put me in a good mood for the interview, though!
  10. Er. Maybe I was wrong to say this wouldn't be news. Just searched Coldplay on twitter expecting excitement/news about ETIAW. At least 50% of the tweets are about this, most of them wrongly claiming Coldplay is somehow involved in the making of the song (and even in a Jihad against Israel.)
  11. Whoops. Double post.
  12. Because some one might be offended by the words "Suck It" apparently. Retailers don't wanna get sued by unhappy patrons. USA! USA! Anyway, I absolutely love the new album. All My Own Stunts is the only song I can't really get into. (Yes, I even like Brick by Brick....)
  13. I went to Lolla a few years ago. Amazing experience. If you're there primarily for Coldplay, though, park yourself at their stage early. Like 12 or 1 o'clock.
  14. Well, they've been into some controversial stuff like Make Trade Fair since the very early days. And the risk here probably isn't that big. 99% of fans will never know. Of the 1%, generally speaking, those in Europe will support the decision, while a few in America might be upset. Israel's the only place where this will be news.
  15. I/r/t Coldplay's appearance: Somewhere along the line, people got the idea that a musician's art should be limited to the music. Creativity expresses itself in many ways (see Radiohead's album booklet art, or The Beatles' many films), and I'm incredibly pleased to see a band's enthusiasm and excitement spill over into costumes and photo shoots.
  16. I'm actually pleased with the lyrics! Even so, I'm surprised that people are putting so much consideration into them (I suppose it's because that's all we have :P), given that we're talking about COLDPLAY. My favorite band, yes, but Chris has never been particularly genius when it comes to lyrics.
  17. Probably a twitter error. Profile pics regularly shift back and forth for a few days after a change.
  18. Not to get anybody too hyped up (and I'm sure this has been said a dozen times on here), but I think we're gonna get a significant amount of material in the next month or so. It's just hard for me to imagine them doing the Viva tour all over again this summer. Of course, it would also be cool if they played a bunch of really old stuff, though.
  19. I mean, really. People are complaining about the lyrics being generic? Hasn't that always been a crack against Coldplay--that Chris's lyrics are so nonspecific as to speak to almost no one (while attempting to speak to everyone)? VLV was a big improvement lyrically, and these seem to fit pretty snugly with songs from that era, particularly LiT ii and Rainy Day.
  20. Just finished the first listen. Taking it to the car for listen two. Feeling mixed at the moment. I do think it's pretty awesome that the band that was supposed to "save" rock in the early 00's has retreated to a new wave/synth rock sound, which (along with disco) sort of "ruined" rock for a lot of people in the 80s.
  21. 30 second previews of each track: http://blogs.1077theend.com/aharms/2011/02/28/the-strokes-angels-album-preview/
  22. I love the sing-a-long, Walkmen-esque second half, although the beginning is a bit underwhelming. I can appreciate that they tried to craft a traditional-sounding holiday piece, although there's something to be said for bringing something new to a genre. Overall, it's pleasant enough for what it is, but the song has no bearing whatsoever on my expectations for the new album, as I have no reason to believe this is indicative of LP5's sound and/or lyrics.
  23. It's a solid live performance. To be covered should be a great honor. As usual, people on here automatically reject it.
