  5. Modest Mouse, Joss Stone, Elliott Yamin, Marques Houston Bow in Top 10 March 27, 2007 There are no traps on this week’s chart for Modest Mouse. The Portland, OR indie darlings’ new Epic album, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, docked at #1 this week, with an above water total of 133k. The group follows up nicely from its 2004 breakthrough, Good News for People Who Love Bad News, which sold a total of 1.5 million. Several other new acts have good news, too. Virgin U.K. soul diva Joss Stone’s third album proved the charm for record buyers at #2, racking up 124k in sales after her sophomore effort kicked in 1.2 million. In the week’s biggest surprise, another American Idol alum, Elliott Yamin, sees his debut on Hickory Records, the new label from Sony/ATV’s Danny Strick through Bob Morelli’s RED, score a total of 96k for managers Jeff Rabhan and Josh Abraham. He bows just above fellow show grad Daughtry, who remains at #4. As Borat would say: “Niiiiiiice.” Universal Motown stud Marques Houston’s Veteran made it four newcomers to the Top 5, landing at #5. The rest of the Top 10 includes SRC/Universal Motown’s Akon (#6), now at double-platinum, The Inc./Universal Motown’s Lloyd (#7), giving Motown queen Sylvia Rhone three of the Top 7, last week’s chart-topper, Atlantic’s Musiq Soulchild (#8), Universal Republic’s breakthrough Amy Winehouse (#9) and Interscope’s Mobile, AL rapper Rich Boy (#10). Other chart newcomers include Universal Republic’s Baby Boy Da Prince (#24), Rap-A-Lot/Atlantic’s Devin the Dude (#29), Reprise’s Crime Mob (#30), Universal Republic’s Stephen Marley (#31) and Psychopathic’s Insane Clown Posse (#40). Walt Disney Records’ Hannah Montana soundtrack returns to the Top 25 as the week’s biggest gainer, moving #35-21, +69%, followed by Def Jam/IDJ’s Young Jeezy #34, +13%). Other positive moves are registered by Blue Note’s Norah Jones (#13, +3%), A&M/Interscope’s Fergie (#14, +3%), Universal Republic’s Hinder (#33, +2%) and Fueled by Ramen/WMG’s Gym Class Heroes (#46-38, +8%). Next week, a couple of heavy hitters make the scene, as Curb’s Tim McGraw and EMM’s Now 24 along with G Unit/Interscope’s Young Buck, Def Jam’s Redman and Capitol’s Mims.
